1:52 am
oakland has not had a permanent police chief for eight months now. he fired armstrong in february after a report found that he mishandled officer misconduct cases but last month an independent arbitrator cited with armstrong saying he should not have been disciplineid. we found out during the pandemic you can learn a lot about where you live by your waste water. scientists were using it to see how the coronavirus was spreading in certain places. now, scientists are looking for something a little different. drugs. we have more on how scientists in marin are seeing an interesting trend on one day of the week in particular [music] >> reporter: as we all know about the human body, what goes in must come out. drink, food, or fentanyl. >> the good thing about waste water is that everyone is
1:53 am
contributing, everybody uses the toilet.. >> reporter: so haily and her colleagues have been working on an experiment this year as marin county flushed out some facts from this. the collective waste water from 95% of marin. >> this is the first time we have done this. this is the regional plant. >> water comes in this building, it gets strene screened and the water flows through the tanks here. through the towers, then, discharges into a pipe that goes two miles out of the san francisco bay. >> reporter: but, small samples. >> the samples right here. >> reporter: analyzed for drug concentration >> and we send off six samples twice a week. >> reporter: and? >> the data is slowing fentanyl use is high in marin and consistently high. >> reporter: the data has been showing not only that. >> we also saw that methamphetamine use is high in marin. >> can you correlate drug use with days of the week?
1:54 am
>> oh, that is a great question. we have been sharing the data with some of our colleagues that work on the ground. cocaine for example, consumptions are higher on monday than wednesday that might suggest that drug is more often used on the weekends, we don't know who individually is contributing it but we know the community level risk. >> reporter: what the health department can do with this is a when fentanyl use is spiking. they rush advice to fentanyl users >> through things like fentanyl test strips, not using alone, ensuring they have things like narcan that can reverse an overdose. >> reporter: one other thing they are watching as the flu season begins, what else, covid levels. stay tuned. >> in fact the scientists watching those numbers say big surprise here the amount of covid in the waste water is slowly starting to climb. if trends stay the same the worst months for cold and flu will be

in january. starting to feel like fall around here. what a difference it makes between a scorching fleet week friday and if you were out you felt the heat. and, a misty monday. in fact, as we send it over to you next door, it was not just misty. i actually saw legitimate rain. >> how about that. >> in san francisco. as promised. you did deliver. everyone though i knew it was coming it made me stop in my tracks to say what is that? >> the frustrating part about that is the only measurable rain i have san francisco is one place. and i was drenched when i walked out at 6:00. you stand in mist long enough you get drenched. not a lot. that system that brought us today's rain is history. before i use the virtual map to show you what the chance for rain for your part of the bay is tomorrow, i want to show you the second system. there is an
1:56 am
entirely separate second system that comes in tomorrow with another round of rain. look at the clouds up there. future cast can actually read where the rain is in that. now we can visualize this thing and watch that come onshore and we just kind of catch the southern tail edge of it. we are going to look at that in high-resolution detail, we will slow it down and come into the bay in one second. i just want to use the virtual map to kind of tell the story in a slightly different way to give you an idea on what your chances of rain are tomorrow. what we will put on here is your odds. the percentage of precipitation, it is your chance if you will get rain or not. the south bay. 10% chance in this. low odds, but f we walk northward and just pick out different parts of the bay, there is a trend, the farther north we go, the higher the odds get. by the time we get up to santa rosa, take a look at the number. it is the one place
1:57 am
on here where your percent of precipitation chance is 40%. that only tells you what the odds are that you will get rain. not how much you are going to get. you are not going to get a lot. again, we will get to that in one second. the other thing to use the map for is day time highs tomorrow. it is a repeat of today. temperatures not budging, below average, a fall weather system, we are staying relatively cool. let's bring in that forecast. i will lose the map and go old school and pull in the forecast imagery. using the high-resolution rapid refresh to show us the details on timing for this rain. this is tomorrow. that is tomorrow in the afternoon. that is when the next cold front gets here. that is the most impressive part of the whole thing. the afternoon in the north bay. it is not super impressive. that is probably at best 1/10th of an inch of rain that comes down through the early afternoon in the north bay. then you watch the line get down to the golden
1:58 am
gate. now we are looking at it in the evening. it is weakening as it goes. falling apart, the showers are a lot more hit and miss spotty. by the time we get to san jose that is why you have a 10% chance. when we looked at this on the virtual map. we look at it both ways and come away with the whole story in that way. less than 1/10th of an inch of rain if you get any rain out of that. let's move on and get to the seven-day forecast. tuesday is the day you have the most excitement on it. that is the day here. drop of rain coming down in the tube. no other day has it. we are done with tuesday, a bit of a warm up, looking at inland valleys here, back up in the lower 80s. then, on saturday, we start cooling back down again. and there is another system coming our way. that would love to bring rain to northern california. it looks like it will fall apart before it gets here. while we increase the clouds and cool the temperatures down, at this point, for next weekend, don't have rain in the forecast. it will get a little cooler. we will do the same thing now.
1:59 am
that was for inland parts of the bay. let's remove the forecast for inland parts and bring in the actual bay forecast. you will see the numbers lower. but the theme, it is the same. a chance of rain tomorrow. we warm up a bit through here. and then clouds increase on saturday. we will keep an eye on that, sara. we will let you know. for now, next weekend does not look like it will get rained on. it could get close. back to you. what is wrong with this graphic from the niner game last night? that is your trivia question heading into the break . >> i will have to think about that. ahead in sports, it will be back to work for the 49ers, raiders, monday night spotlight. and an incredible october baseball playoffs. tonight it was for the national league
