israel orders a full siege of gaza, and the threat from hamas to kill hostages. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today is the fourth day of israel's war with hamas on the country's retribution for saturday's surprise assault is only intensifying. about israel sealing off the gaza strip from food, fuel, and other supplies, and the death toll is growing. 900 people have already been killed in israel. in gaza, at least 700. 1,500 bodies of hamas militants have been found in israel. they've called up 3,000 israeli reservists. check out these satellite images from saturday showing the dozens of fires near the border between the gaza strip and israel.

naomi ruchim joins us now from new york. naomi, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. president biden is expected to address the war in a speech this afternoon. overnight israel carried out more strikes. among the targets, two mosques and a weapons compound, which israel says were operations for hamas. they have re-established control over the border fence separating gaza and israel. israeli rocket blasts shook gaza this morning after prime minister benjamin netanyahu declared warfor the retaliation attacks that began over the weekend. >> they must support israel in defeating hamas. >> reporter: hundreds of people on both sides have been killed. hamas also claims to have taken dozens of israeli hostages including an 85-year-old grandmother seen here. >> i'm sure she's very scared.

>> reporter: hamas has threatened to execute civilians as fighting intensifies near the border. israel says one of its deputy commanders was killed. back in the u.s. tempers flare as some protests broke out in several cities yesterday. >> no one look at us. no one care about us. >> there's nothing we can do other than go to war and hope for the best. >> reporter: the white house says military assistance is already on its way to israel, though, there are no plans to put u.s. boots on the ground. some state and local leaders say they are heightening security at synagogues and jewish schools, though, the fbi tells cbs news there's no specific or credible intelligence indicating a threat to the u.s. stemming from the attacks in israel. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you, naomi. we're also hearing heroic stories about people who lost their lives including from families of american victims.

brandies university professor illam troen was on the phone with his daughter saturday when she and her husband were killed saturday. >> the terrorists came through their place, broke through the doors, shot them, the bullet actually entered his abdomen. >> troen was in israel at the time. he rushed to a hospital to meet with his grandson who is now recovering from his injuries. and we're learning of some incredible stories of survival during the hamas attack on israel. "cbs evening news" anchor and editing manager norah o'donnell spoke with a mother whose neighborhood was overrun. miri messika say she and her husband and three children jumped from a second floor window after their home was set on fire.

>> we couldn't breathe because of the smoke and because of the gas. it was very frightening. >> the family rushed to a neighbor's bomb shelter where they hid in silence for seven hours while masked terrorists rained gunfire outside. the worst part, she says, was the sheer terror of waiting. the mothers of families texted each other with updates. the reported death toll in the neighborhood is more than 100. and some of the world's most famous landmark were lit up to show support for israel. last night the white house turned blue and white, the colors of israel's flag. pair paris's eiffel tower was bathed in white and blue. the houses of parliament were illuminated in blue and white. and last night france, germany, italy, and the united kingdom issued a joint statement in part saying we make clear the terrorist actions of hamas have no justification, no legitimacy, and must be universally condemned.

president biden will deliver remarks on the conflict. we'll bring you coverage in a cbs news special report. additional u.s. assistance for israel would need approval from congress, but that's not possible right now because the house is shut down with no speaker. kevin mccarthy says he's willing to return if enough republicans who voted against him last week are open to his reinstatement. gop lawmakers are expected to vote as soon as tomorrow on a new speaker, but there's no clear-cut front-runner between the two members in the running, jim jordan and steve scalise. president biden was interviewed about his handling of classified documents. he was interviewed voluntarily by special counsel robert hur sunday and monday. hur was appointed by attorney general merrick garland. the documents were discovered at his delaware home and in a washington d.c. office he used

they say when officers entered, they made contact with the suspect and shot the driver. there's no word on a motive. robert f. kennedy jr. announces a third-party bid, and senator chuck schumer has a rare meeting with china's leader. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the hill" reports chinese president xi jinping strengthened his country's statement on israel after pressure from senator chuck schumer. schumer met with xi in beijing yesterday. it was part of a delegation of six senators aimed at improving relations between the u.s. and china. schumer criticized china's initial statement on the hamas attacks, which only called for restraint. the country later issued a new statement condemning all violence and attacks on civilians. "the washington post" says republicans turned on robert f. kennedy jr. after he launched an independent bid for president. yesterday in philadelphia kennedy announced he was dropping his bid for the democratic nomination and said he was running as an independent.

jarred hill has today's "moneywatch." >> u.s. stocks ended higher monday after officials with the federal reserve signaled they may not need to raise rates at their november meeting. the dow gained 197 points, the nasdaq up 52, and the s&p 500 rose 27 points. another labor strike hits the nation. pharmacy workers at some walgreens stores walked out monday. cbs concludes this includes pharmacy techs and support staff. reports say that employees cite harsh working conditions that make it difficult to safely fill prescriptions. walkouts could last through wednesday. more autoworkers are hitting the picket lines. 4,000 members of the united autoworkers union at mack trucks went on strike monday after a rejected lightest contract offer. meanwhile tens of thousands of uaw workers continue to strike against ford, gm, and stellantis, though, last friday the union decided not to expand that walkout following an

on when a rogue wave flipped his boat over in the pacific ocean last week. he says he usually rows naked to prevent chafing. a french navy aircraft spotted his boat and a cruise ship rescued him. he was suffering from sun burn and dehydration. robinson was on a 15-month voyage across the pacific. first max, now lydia. folks in mexico getting a one-two punch. from mother nature. max has been downgraded to a tropical depression, though, after slamming the pacific coast with torrential rain and about 60-mile-per-hour winds, and now alydia is gaining strength. the category 1 hurricane is about 300 miles west of puerto vallarta and is expected to make landfall later on today. in asia monsoon rains triggered flooding reeking havoc in parts of myanmar. officials and state-run media reporting that flooding has displaced at least 14,000 people and disrupted the country's major train lines.
