now we have all seen the images of suffering amid war breaking out in the middle east. it can be hard to look at, hard to imagine what the people in israel and gaza are living through now. but there is a group of american families who have been very purposely combing through all of that footage relentlessly scrolling social media not looking away because that has been their only hope of trying to find their lost loved ones. the white house says 14 americans have been killed and 20 more are unaccounted for. two of the missing are from here in california. some of the families of the americans believed to be held hostage gathered today in tel aviv to plead with the u.s. and israel for help. is some say they have gotten no information from the government about how their loved ones are or if anyone is going to get them. >> it is the kind of text that will make any parent's storm. there were two text in a row

from her at 8:11. the first one said, "i love you" and immediately it said "i'm sorry" her son was born in berkeley. he was at the music festival. 260 people were slaughtered and the last rachel learned about her son's whereabouts is haunting. >> he was injured in a gun battle. they were all civilians at a music festival fish in a barrel sitting in this bomb shelter, terrorists came to the door. they were throwing grenades in, shooting machine guns and we know that his arm from the elbow down was severed, was blown off. >> reporter: his parents think militants dragged her son into gaza. they have not heard from him since. another mother, a

grandmother. she was sitting on her porch when her neighborhood was attacked. >> my brother and sister were on the call with her as the terrorists barged into her home and we heard a little bit of screaming and that was our last contact with her. the optimistic scenario is that she is held hostage in gaza and not dead on the street. [crying] >> reporter: what these families have in common now is the hope that the united states will do something to get their loved one back. they say they have gotten little to no information and they are frustrated and desperate. >> i want also to speak about the responsibility that the

u.s. administration, president biden and the secretary of state blinken has for the lives of every u.s. citizen that is out there and they are responsible for bringing the u.s. citizens back home safe and sound. we expect nothing less from the u.s. administration and from president biden.. >> tonight we are getting a clearer picture of the horrifying impact of this war on the youngest victim. today reporters got access to some of the villages near the border where hamas terrorists unleashed brutality on entire families who had no idea what was coming. even israeli general was shocked at what he saw. >> killed parents in front of children, killing children in front of parents. we found

families. they cut head of the people. >> israel is retaliating from the skies. there were hundreds of air strikes on the gaza strip. the ministry of health says 900 people have died there. more than half of them women and children. tonight, humanitarian groups want to help but they are just as paralyzed as the civilians with no way out. ip cluing a bay area group whose mission is to heal children wounded by war. we spoke to a woman who says she has helped them before and she is ready to do it again.. >> reporter: 14 years old and living in gaza when he lost a leg in an israeli missile attack. according to the nonprofit palestine's children relief fund. he lost his motwo native and palestinian american and her mom hosted him at their san mateo home in 2014 when he

received a prosthetic leg. >> from what i remember he was very sweet, very calm. he taught me was just being thankful and living his life every day with gratitude. in gaza you just don't know what tomorrow will bring. >> reporter: eager to host another injured or sick child that needs medical care. pcrs raises money and works with local hospitals to provide critical treatments and surgeries. >> it is never good to see children losing their lives. children can not help where they are born. 50% of the population in gaza is children. it really is heartbreaking to think that is the only world that they have known and seen. i think my fondest memories are taking them to simple things like to the movies. >> reporter: she and her mom hosted three palestinian children. the organization has not been able to host anyone in recent years due to covid concerns. but she stands ready to help now. >> sometimes here, being raised here you lose sight of things.

it really humbled me. and their determination and their will to stay positive and happy. i think once, you know, the legistics are sorted out i think they will hit the ground running with hosting children. >> reporter: i spoke to the founder who tuesday is impossible to know exactly when they will be able to start getting kids out of gaza. they are already seeking volunteers to help. >> we are open for people from every background, mental health specialists, doctors, surgeons, nurses, trauma specialists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, businessmen, housewives, college students, an organization that enables anyone to volunteer a place to come forward.. >> any child seeking help will need to be granted a visa by the israeli government first. thousands of miles away, in the united states, people are

feeling unedge. some are questioning if they are safe. we visited an oakland synagogue that reached out to the police for extra protection. >> reporter: most weeks rabbi bloom knows exactly what he will say during his service. these days he is at a loss for words. >> kind of wondering if normal prayer is adequate. devastating attack from hamas that killed civilians sent shock waves through his congregation. >> almost everybody knows somebody who is over there. someone who's children or themselveses have been called up for reserve duty. many have family members some, in the army. it is a great concern. >> the concern is not limited to those living in israel. >> you have services and events here in this courtyard space, children play in the playground, we have a preschool every day. >> reporter: synagogues all over the world are ramping up

security amid a rise in anti-semitic rhetoric. >> when israel is involved in conflict anti-semitism increases in america. >> reporter: that is why on saturday rabbi bloom took no chances asking oakland pd for help. >> we called them. said have you been following the events in the news. they said yes we have and we will be there for you. >> reporter: that has been a comfort for those that live here and whose family live there. >> i am scared for my family, scared for my friends, scared for the future of israel and i am scared to be jewish here. i am walking around with my necklace in hebrew and i am question figure i should do that. >> we know we have to continue to live our life that is what we do as jews >> reporter: serving is a calming force during a dark time. little help from both

. a man went to his grave knowing he was innocent. few others believed him, though. living a lot of his life thinking he was a child killer wants to clear his name after dna finally did. tonight, his brother told us what people should know about who he really was. >> he was an outsider. he had to be. nobody wanted to be around him, you know, he was different. >> chris melton showed me photos of his older brother, shawn. a loaner. but, shawn was a dreamer. >> he wanted to be a bigger person and tried to help. >> reporter: as an adult shawn felt his calling was in law enforcement. he was set on

becoming a private investigator, offering his help when jeremy vanished and was found murdered. the police thought shawn knew too much >> even though they had other evidence at the time all of that got brushed aside. they focused on him. >> reporter: shawn was wrongly accused of murdering and raping jeremy. after two trials and two hung juries, shawn's charges were dismissed. >> all of this time this which hunt was going on. witch-hunt was going on. scott did not live to the day his name was cleared. >> bittersweet news came last month when they got the call saying shawn had been exonerated by dna evidence. >> how would he have responded to that news? >> he would have been jumping for joy on that. >> probably crying >> crying. >> reporter: that same dna led

cold case investigators to arrest fred kane who they now believe is jeremy stoner's true killer. a man who was interviewed as an original suspect but walked free for nearly four decades. >> i am, i am grateful that we finally have some closure to shawn's involvement. but i will be so much more happy when the stoner family has their closure. >> fred kane is due in court on thursday. meanwhile, investigators are looking into if he had anything to do with the murder of a 9-year-old boy in martinez just a month before stoner went missing in 1987. if your morning includes this bridge leave early. a semi truck slammed into it and caught fire. the truck driver, a 43-year-old, died at the hospital. no one else was hurt.

part of the toll plaza was destroyed. we don't know how long the repairs will take. until then, expect delays and wide load vehicles have to go around on highway 37. a bay area brewery is tapping into a new and sustainable way to make beer. there is something to get passed if you want to try it. an important detail. coming from the sinks and the showers of this high-rise on mission street which is one of the first in the city to have a water reussystem. waste water system treats 7500 gallons a day from the building. devils canyon brewery teamed up with the company to make the epic 1-water brew. style of beer that would be effected by any imperfections in the water. >> when i first entered the industry. a lot of people said the public is not ready for recycled water. it is hard for people to overcome. what our

the plan to see how much rain we got, that front weakened. we did not get anything measurable down here. none of them got anything. light rain for a time, certainly on the peninsula you did. but, we did not get anything measurable in the gauge. we will go into the differences on how that played out so widely different across the bay. look at san francisco. there is your rain. look up to the north bay. santa rosa up there. a couple inches of rain. measurable rain. i will drop the numbers for a second. i will point out what is one of the most important features in the bay area. you live in marin you know it well. if you looked at it from a distance you know it well. the big peak on the southern edge of the county. that mountain acted like kind of a lift forced the winds to go up as the cold front comes through. look how much rain it got. downhill from that. you benefit friday that. you got almost a quarter of an inch of

rain today. so, you can see how it played out. the citys were not big winners today. the mountains did pretty good. i will lose the monitor with the rainfall totals, looking ahead to tomorrow. instead of talking about rain, there is mow more of that coming, we are done. more blue sky than anything else. looking at day time highs, this is tomorrow's forecast. almost identical to today. in general, if you pick out most of the numbers, the general theme is going up 3 degrees than where you were. livermore, 72. a couple degrees warmer than you were today. the same story for concord, you will go to the lower 70s. so, thursday, it will be noticeably warmer than that. those temperatures are going to start climbing for everybody on thursday. if we look at the big picture here we are not going to even check in on the first alert doppler. the showers, bay area are done. if we go to the wide view, we can see the next chance of rain. way out there in the pacific, future cast can depict where the rain is now,

play it forward, watch what happens, the line comes our way. it looks promising. it will cool us down. but, i don't think we will get rain out of that. if you look at it on the long-range forecast. as we head towards saturday, falls apart. did not materialize. two more after that. coming here and trying to come with rain. does not look like any will be able to deliver. when you put it in the seven-day forecast you will see what happens. you have your two days of sunshine here. thursday in particular. we are going to go up more on thursday. it will be sunny, noticeably warmer, then, the clouds increase, the temperatures start coming back down. if you look, technically, there is a little more cloud over here. a 10% chance of rain by the time we get to monday. that is not just for the inland microclimates, that is bay area wide. if we look at it for everybody, we get the bay in here now. the story is the same. we will keep watching back here for monday, tuesday,

. before we go to colbert tonight we know it has been a couple tough days, shocked and saddened by all of the suffering we have seen in the middle east. there are people trying to make a difference. if it is saving lives, lightening up heavy hearts or using your voice to support people in their worst times. an american, a physician assistant who was on vacation in israel when the fighting broke out. now she is volunteering at a tel aviv hospital. amazing three her grandmother worked in that very same hospital when she came to israel from hungry after surviving the holocaust. >> i feel like it is my country. i am jewish. i feel like everybody that has been effected by this is my family >> how are you doing? >> there are good moments and bad moments. i think right now we had a siren, a couple before we started speaking. i think my anxiety built up. i had a little bit of a panic attack. but, you know, you must go on.
