"the color purple" hits theaters christmas day. for more, download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm jarred hill, cbs news, new york. it's wednesday, october 11th. this is the "cbs morning news." on the offensive. parts of gaza reduced to rubble as israel keeps up its relentless attacks against hamas.

the death toll growing. americans among the missing, and the first u.s. ammunitions arrive as the secretary of state heads to israel. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. another night of israeli bombardment. warplanes hammering gaza with hundreds of missiles. a live look now at the gaza skyline. the numbers are staggering. in just five days, more than 2,100 people killed on both sides. at least 14 americans among them, and around 20 still unaccounted for. scenes of destruction are everywhere. entire neighborhoods including residential buildings gone. satellite images from overhead also show the extent of the ruins as israeli troops amass near the border preparing for a possible ground invasion. naomi ruchim is here in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. hamas has taken more than 100 people hostage, and according to israeli officials some of them are american.
4:32 am
hamas has said it will not negotiate for their release while gaza is still under fire. that fire is ramping up with 450 air strikes in the last 24 hours. israel conducted hundreds of air strikes on suspected hamas targets late last night into this morning. attempts by hamas to launch rockets into israel were mostly intercepted by iron dome defense systems. military officials say dozens of israeli battalions have been stationed near gaza in preparation for a possible ground assault. israel is also sending tanks to its border with lebanon. >> we've never seen such savagery in the history of the state. >> reporter: israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and president joe biden discussed u.s. support yesterday. >> we stand with israel, and we will make sure israel has what it needs to take care of its citizens, defend itself, and respond to this attack. >> reporter: the first u.s.

shipment of weapons has already arrived in israel, and defense officials say a small group of u.s. special forces are on the ground there to help with planning and intelligence. the pentagon has also released new images of the "uss gerald r. ford" carrier strike group which has been repositioned to the eastern mediterranean sea to dougher it other nations from taking advantage of the fighting. pro-israel demonstrations again took to the streets in multiple u.s. cities yesterday. meanwhile in gaza residents search for survivors of the latest israeli air attacks. >> it is time for all of this to come to an end for the sake of everyone. >> reporter: the united nations says 200,000 people in gaza have been displaced since the conflict began. secretary of state antony blinken plans to arrive in israel tomorrow. according to the white house, blinken will condemn the attack with israel and share

condolences for the victims. the secretary will also discuss measures for bolstering security in the country. anne-marie? >> all right, naomi ruchim in new york. thank you so much. the first plane carrying american ammunition landed in southern israel last night. the idf says the munitions will help them strike back and protect the country's air defense also known as the iron dome. israel says the anti-missile system has about a 95% success rate, but it was overwhelmed this time due to the sheer number of rockets fired. david martin takes a look at how it works. >> reporter: israel says hamas has launched more than 4,500 rockets. many of them intercepted by the iron dome air defense system. it has kept the death toll from going even higher. president biden promised to send more interceptors manufactured by raytheon at about $50,000 each. >> we're surging additional military assistance including ammunition and interceptors to replenish iron dome. we're going to make sure that israel does not run out of these critical assets.
4:35 am
>> reporter: iron dome has been defending israel against terrorist rockets for more than a decade. >> it has been effective as it typically is in taking a lot of those rockets out of the sky and saving countless lives by doing so. now of course, some rockets have gotten through to tragic cost. >> reporter: because the flight time for a rocket is so short, iron dome can operate on automatic. [ siren ] as soon as a rocket launch is detected, an alert goes out telling everyone to run for shelter while iron dome launches its interceptors, homing in only on rockets headed toward populated areas. so it doesn't have to fire 4,500 interceptors to shoot down 4,500 rockets? >> no. a significant fraction of rockets are not going to hit anything vital. >> reporter: retired general frank mckenzie, commander in the u.s. forces in the middle east, says hamas doesn't care where the rockets land.
4:36 am
>> they've got a large stockpile of missiles, and i think we should anticipate the intensity of these attacks to continue for a few days yet. >> reporter: if hezbollah, which is based in lebanon on israel's northern border, unleashes its stockpile of rockets and missiles, as well, iron dome could be stretched to the limit. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. be sure to stay with cbs news all day for complete coverage of the war. this morning on "cbs mornings," senator and republican presidential hopeful tim scott will join the program. he's on the senate foreign relations committee, and we'll ask him about all the latest developments. last night the candidates for house speaker, jim jordan and steve scalise, made their case in a closed door republican forum. florida republican matt gaetz, who led the charge to oust kevin mccarthy, shared thoughts on the speaker's race. >> i'm very confident that both of these men would represent an upgrade over speaker mccarthy, so i'm not concerned that things

that really imperilled his speakership would be baggage carried by speaker jordan or a speaker scalise. >> a vote is expected today, but as michael george reports, lawmakers appear to be split. >> reporter: house republicans are meeting behind closed doors hoping to unify behind one candidate for speaker of the house in order to avoid a repeat of january when it took 15 votes on the house floor to elect kevin mccarthy. >> i think we're going to do this within the republican family behind closed doors because, quite frankly, i don't want a repeat of what we did on the floor with multiple candidates, and neither did the candidates that are up. >> reporter: majority leader steve scalise of louisiana and ohio congressman jim jordan are the leading contenders making their pitch to republican colleagues. neither have the support of the majority, raising concerns that this could be a protracted battle. >> there's going to have to be a real reckoning within the conference here about the path forward. >> reporter: the house can't vote on any legislation until a

speaker is elected. lawmakers can't even put out a resolution officially denouncing the war in israel. >> we've got to get back on track. this is a dangerous world right now. let me say it again, we stand strongly with israel. the house needs to get back to work. >> reporter: president biden is calling on congress to pass a bill sending more weapons to israel to use in its war against hamas. >> ask them to take urgent action to fund the national security requirements of our critical partners. this is not about party or politics. this is about the security of our world. >> reporter: the white house may also try to include aid for ukraine in a bill providing aid for israel. while there is broad support within the house republican caucus to support israel, there's a growing list of gop members opposed to spending more money on the war in ukraine. michael george, cbs news, new % york. new york republican congressman george santos is facing new criminal charges. santos is accused of stealing
