leader, but does steve scalise have the votes to win the gavel? the fight he's still facing with -- within his own parti. we have a lottery winner. someone is waking up $1.7 billion richer. where the winning ticket was sold. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israel is tightening the reins around gaza. the humanitarian crisis is growing with electricity shut off and entire neighborhood reduced to rubble. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu created a new cabinet with a longtime opposition critic. this is a look at gaza on the sixth day of the war. the fighting has claimed at least 2,300 lives on both sides and 22 americans. shanelle kaul joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the impact is devastating. the u.n. says more than 330,000 people have so far been

displaced since israel began pummelling gaza. now with limited commercial flights in the air, the u.s. is working to get americans out. six days since the surprise attack from hamas militants, israel continues striking gaza. around 300,000 israeli troops are now positioned near the gaza strip, among them reservists mobilized from countries around the world including the u.s. >> we're just going to go back, bring the peace as soon as possible. >> reporter: overnight the israeli national anthem was sung from balconies in holon while gaza was thrown into darkness after the region's only power plant ran out of fuel. hospitals there now relying on generators with the humanitarian crisis growing. yesterday israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu vowed to wipe hamas off the map. he and his top political rival have now formed an emergency wartime cabinet.

>> silence is complicity. >> reporter: at a white house round table with jewish leaders, president biden said he issued a warning to iran which has given money and weapons to hamas for years. >> make it clear to the iranians, be careful. >> reporter: the president also said his administration is working to help get americans out. secretary of state antony blinken is now on the ground in israel to discuss further military assistance and the hostage situation. the state department issuing an advisory warning americans not to travel to israel. amid biden's warning to iran, preliminary u.s. intelligence now indicates senior iranian officials were surprised by the hamas-led attack on israel, suggesting tehran was not directly involved in that brutal assault. anne-marie? >> shanelle kaul in new york. thank you very much. just a short time ago, secretary of state antony blinken arrived in israel in a show of solidarity.

he's meeting with prime minister netanyahu and other security cabinet officials. cbs' ed o'keefe has more from the white house. this is an act of sheer evil. >> reporter: president biden condemned the attacks by hamas which he revealed killed at least 14 american citizens, comparing it to the worst rampages of i.s.i.s. >> parents butchered, using their bodies to try to protect their children. women raped, assaulted, paraded as trophies. >> reporter: he said the u.s. is sending operators to help israel coordinate the rescue of more than 100 hostages held by the militant group including americans. >> we now know that american citizens are among those being held by hamas. >> reporter: a carrier strike group including the "uss gerald ford" arrived in the region and could be used as a platform to launch hostage rescue missions. national security adviser jake sullivan says there are 20 or more americans missing, though it's unclear how many have been abducted by hamas. he said there are no current plans to send u.s. troops into

the conflict. >> at this point, that is not something that is under planning. >> reporter: with the fighting ongoing, the president huddled with his national security team and held his third phone call since the war began with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> president joe, i want to thank you for your continued and unequivocal support. >> reporter: offering more military support, including precision-guided munitions for fighter jets. a major fear among allies that a iranian-backed hezbollah could fully join fight. the president issued this warning -- >> anyone thinking of taking advantage of the situation, i have one word -- don't. >> that was ed o'keefe reporting. congress appears to be on the verge of electing a new speaker of the house. republican lawmakers who hold the majority in the house have selected the person they plan to nominate. but the caucus remains somewhat divided. delaying a final vote on the house floor. skyler henry has more details from capitol hill. who are you going to call --

>> reporter: house republicans have selected steve scalise to be their nominee for speaker of the house. >> the first order of business under speaker steve scalise is going to be bring a strong resolution expressing support for israel. we've got a bipartisan bill, the mccaul-meeks resolution ready to go. >> reporter: he edged out jim jordan 113-99 to win the nomination. >> i voted for jordan, but with salise won outright i'll vote for scalise. it's time to have a speaker. >> reporter: enough republicans say they still support jordan, leaving scalise short of the 217 votes needed. >> i think the number is large and growing of people who will not vote for scalise on the floor. >> reporter: the new speaker has to hit the ground running, with the federal government facing a range of critical issues. >> to help families get back on track. to address our border crisis. to get our economy moving again. to address the spending in washington that's driving inflation, high energy costs.

>> reporter: the federal government runs out of money in 37 days, and the fight over the last spending bill caused eight republican lawmakers to sde with democrats to vote out kevin mccarthy as the previous speaker. >> i'm looking forward to having a new speaker. have some fiscal sanity in the room. >> reporter: the white house wants congress to pass a new bill with billions of dollars in military aid. >> we are in active conversations with members of congress about additional funding for ukraine and for israel. >> reporter: there's broad support to pass more aid for israel, but a growing number of house republicans oppose more funding for ukraine. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. right now at least ten republicans say that they do not plan to vote for scalise. one of them facing new trouble from his own party. a group of gop lawmakers from new york will introduce a resolution to expel fellow new york republican george santos from congress. it comes a day after santos was hit with nearly two dozen new criminal charges, including

identity theft and fraud. he's accused of stealing the identities of campaign donors and using their credit cards to make thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges. he says that he'll fight the charges. a federal judge has agreed to drop an old gun possession charge against hunter biden. prosecutors asked for the charge to be dropped. it was part of an earlier plea deal that collapsed. the old gun possession charge was replaced with a three-count indictment after the deal fell apart in july. president biden's son has pleaded not guilty to lying about his drug use when he bought a gun in 2018. thousands more autoworkers walked off the job as the uaw expands its strike against the three big automakers. 8,700 workers left their jobs yesterday at ford truck plant in louisville, kentucky. the union's president said his members have waited long enough to bargain for a fair contract. it comes nearly four weeks after the uaw began its limited strike against gm, ford, and stellantis.

almost 34,000 workers are now on strike. overnight talks between striking actors and hollywood studios broke off more than a week after negotiations resumed. the studios announced they suspended talks saying the gap between the two sides is too big to continue negotiations. actors went on strike in july demanding higher wages and residual pay from streaming productions. this week wga members approved a new contract five months after writers went on strike. and some big breaking news this morning. a winning ticket has been sold for the second largest powerball jackpot in history. one grand prize-winning ticket, just one, was sold in california for the massive $1.76 billion powerball prize. it is the first time someone has matched all six members since back in july. if the winner takes the lump sum, they'll walk away with just over $756 million before taxes. the store that sold the ticket

on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports sergio brown was arrested in connection with his mother's murder. authorities say the 35-year-old former safety was taken into custody tuesday in san diego as he tried to re-enter the u.s. from mexico. the body of his 73-year-old mother was discovered last month near a creek behind the home they shared in a chicago suburb. he will be extradited back to illinois. "the atlanta journal constitution" says three people were stabbed at hartsfiled-jackson international airport. video shows a woman waving a knife inside the airport yesterday as police talked to her. investigators say the 44-year-old woman first stabbed the driver of a taxi she was in inside the airport. she allegedly stabbed a woman and a police officer in the leg. she was arrested after another officer tackled and disarmed her. there's no word on what may have led to the stabbings. and the "associated press" says a black texas high school student suspended for breaking a

years old. the spacecraft grabbed the black debris off the asteroid three years ago. a capsule brought it back to earth just last month. scientists say the rubble holds carbon and water-bearing minerals, the building blocks of life on earth. the debris is from outside the main sample container which has not yet been opened. so there's a big family dollar voluntary recall, and inflation rises more than expected. here's jarred hill with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: u.s. stocks were up wednesday after the first of two big updates on inflation this week. the dow gained 65 points, nasdaq up 96, and the s&p 500 rose 18 points. wholesale inflation came in hotter than expected. the producer price index which measures the average change in price that businesses pay to suppliers climbed 2.2% compared to last september. we're going to get a look at september's overall inflation numbers today. the report is also a final
