6,000 bombs over the past six days. the death toll is climbing, topping more than 2,800 on both sides, including at least 27 americans. this morning defense secretary lloyd austin arrived in israel one day after america's top cbs' shanelle kaul joins us in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. overnight israel says it struck 750 hamas targets including underground terror tunnels, military compounds, and command centers. this morning a new sign from israel this war is entering its next phase. as israel prepares for a potential ground invasion of gaza, it's now warning the united nations that more than a million people from the north must move south in the next day. but the u.n. says that's impossible without devastating humanitarian consequences. the situation for residents in gaza, nearly half of them children, is already dire with hospitals overwhelmed.

candidate for the speaker designee. >> reporter: louisiana congressman steve scalise making that decision thursday after a day of closed door meetings with his colleagues. >> our conference still has to come together, and it is not there. there are still some people that have their own agendas, and i was clear, we have to have everybody put their agendas on the side and focus on what this country needs. >> reporter: on wednesday, scalise narrowly defeated ohio congressman jim jordan during a secret ballot vote among house republicans to select a speaker. 24 hours later, it was clear divisions remained with scalise still short of the votes needed to get elected on the house floor. >> work today, see what he'll get there. he's still going to be majority leader. i was in the exact same position that he was back in 2015. >> reporter: it's unclear what happens next, and for now business in the u.s. house remains on hold. foreign affairs chair michael

career assistance, and life skill training for 20 years, and we are just getting started. people in florida are cleaning up after a tornado touched down yesterday in palm coast, that's about 60 miles south of jacksonville. drone video shows some of the damage. the roof of one house was destroyed. dozens of homes were damaged. vehicles flipped over, and trees were knock will down. there are no reports of injuries, though. the storm system also caused extensive damage in other parts of the state. well, five officers were shot near minneapolis, and a decision in the elijah mcclain case, those are some of the morning headlines. "the denver post" reports a colorado jury delivered a split verdict in the death of elijah mcclain. >> we the jury find the defendant, randy rodema, guilty of criminal homicide.

-- criminally negligent homicide. >> aurora police officer randy rodema was also convicted on a charge of third-degree assault. another officer, jason rosenblatt, was acquitted on all charges. mcclain was walking home from a store in 2019 wearing a ski mask when someone called 911 to report a suspicious person. officers tackled the 23-year-old and put him in a choke hold before paramedics gave him a sedative. he suffered a heart attack and died several days later. "the minneapolis star-tribune" said a suspect is in custody after officers were shot and the wounded. authorities say drug task force officers were serving a search warrant at a home northwest of minneapolis. they came under fire, shot back, and retreated. after several hours, a 64-year-old suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. the officers' injuries are not life-threatening. and the "associated press" says french police are investigating the possible poisoning of a russian journalist who denounced the war in ukraine on tv.

european union is probing x, and yet another sign the ongoing autoworkers strike is not ending any time soon. jarred hill has today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: after a multi-day climb, u.s. stocks slipped thursday with new data showing inflation is sticking around. the dow lost 173 points. nasdaq fell 85 points, and the s&p 500 dropped 27 points. the european union is officially investigating x, the social media platform once known as twitter. in particular, regulators are looking into how elon musk's company has handled hate speech, misinformation, and violent terrorist content related to the israel-hamas war. the social media company has until wednesday to respond to a set of questions or else it could face fines. the autoworkers strike now a month old, and ford says it's at the limit of what it can offer workers. this comes a day after the union unexpectedly launched a strike at one of the highly profitable suv and pickup plants.
