crossing to allow humanitarian aid to millions in gaza as israel continues its relentless air strikes while troops amass at the border. preparing for a ground invasion. >> finally, home, flights carrying u.s. citizens from israel, land on american soil. as time runs out to give thousands of others out of harm's way. hate on the homefront? >> the fbi issuing a warning about a rise in threats across the country, aimed at jewish and muslim houses of worship. good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. >> the situation in gaza is growing more dire by the moment. food and water supplies are running low. hospitals say they are on the verge of collapse, and more than a million people have left their homes, as israel prepares for a ground assault. palestinian americans hoping to escape the war may be able to do so today, pending the opening of the crossing on gaza's egyptian border to allow foreigners to leave.

secretary of state blinken is set to leave jordan shortly and head back to israel, after wrapping up meetings with arab leaders in six nations. here's the latest death toll. more than 2700 people killed in gaza and more than 1400 in israel. we have more from new york with the latest on the worsening situation there. naomi, good morning. >> ann marie, good morning. >> hundreds of metric tons of aid from several nations have been held up in egypt for days pending the deal to open that border. and breaking on the northern border with lebanon, this morning, the israeli military has ordered the evacuation of people in dozens of communities. amid increasing fighting there with hezbollah. more israeli ground troops have moved closer to gaza, military officials say a hamas commander was killed over the weekend by air strikes. the u.s. embassy says there are reports that a border crossing between egypt and gaza will open

to allow in desperately-needed humanitarian aid, but the situation is unpredictable. >> gaza is running out of water and electricity. >> in a cbs "60 minutes" interview president biden says israel has to go after hamas. >> hamas is a bunch of cowards that are hiding behind the civilians. >> a official tells cbs news, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has invited the president to israel and that both sides have discussed the possibility of that visit. right now, senate majority leader chuck schumer is also in israel, with a bipartisan delegation of senators, including democrats jackie rosen and mark kelly, along with republicans mitt romney and bill cassidy. schumer is the first jewish senate majority leader and the highest ranking jewish elected official in the u.s. his great grandmother and several of her children were killed by nazis in europe. schumer said the visit is meant to show solidarity with israel and its right to defend itself

but yesterday the group was rushed to a shelter in tel aviv to wait out rocket fire by hamas. the senators are set to meet with prime minister netanyahu along with israeli president isaac herzog. ann marie? >> hopefully all of the diplomatic work will make a difference. thank you. well, the israeli military says 155 hostages are being held by hamas in gaza while the u.s. state department says 13 americans are unaccounted for. imtiaz tyab asked about freeing those hostages. >> why don't you just release the people who were -- >> look, okay, what we want first of all, we want daily killing to stop. to stop killing, the officials to stop killing and this is genocide here. it is genocide. >> hamas claims 27 hostages have been killed, and israeli air

strikes, and others have been wounded. that information though has not been confirmed. and the u.s. government has been working to help out americans who want to leave israel. last night, a charter flight with around 300 people landed in tampa from tel aviv. with major u.s. airlines canceling their flights because of the conflict, many people are having a hard time finding a way home. aston martinez has more. >> reporter: americans are slowly returning to safety as the conflict between israel and hamas rages on. scott forster arrived in chicago >> i got to the gate and sat down and started crying. >> the madison wisconsin resident traveled first from israel to berlin and then washington, d.c. before finally landing at o'hare international airport. >> i'm very grateful to be here. but i'm also, my heart is just heavy. it's sad. because of the people that i left behind. >> reporter: other families arriving in new york and new jersey boarded flights on the

sabbath, the jewish day of rest, when travel is typically forbidden. in this case, the israeli airline el al made the exception for the first time since 1982. >> you see rockets going off in the air, smoke rising, and there's lots of hurting people over there, lots of refugees. >> reporter: u.s. officials say their first charter flight landed in athens, greece. in recent days, other governments have evacuated their citizens, including germany, argentina, france, and india. many spent days in bomb shelters. some even injured in the conflict. these citizens applauding after boarding a flight bound for rome. cbs news, new york. the u.s. state department says more than 20,000 u.s. citizens stuck in israel and gaza have reached out to them for departure assistance since the war began. the fbi is warning that threats in the u.s. have been rising since hamas attacked israel last week. the director christopher wray

told reporters yesterday that there have been threats against jews and muslims and houses of worship. officials said hamas, or other foreign terror organizations, could call on supporters to conduct attacks in the u.s. and they said the fbi is moving quickly to mitigate the threats. and make sure you stay with cbs news for complete coverage of the war. this morning, retired u.s. army general and former cia director david petraeus joins cbs mornings in our times square studio. for analysis on the situation in israel and gaza, something he knows a lot about, after overseeing both america's wars in iraq and afghanistan. well, the house is expected to vote tomorrow to try and elect a new speaker. that's according to a notice posted by the democratic whip. on friday, republicans nominated ohio congressman jim jordan. it came after republicans first nominated louisiana congressman steve scalise but he dropped out after failing to secure enough votes to become speaker. it is not clear if jordan has

70s sitcom "three's company" has died. suzanne somers who played chrissy died sunday in her palm springs, california, home after a long battle with breast cancer, a best selling author and entrepreneur and last year she revealed she made about $300 million marketing the thigh master workout device. suzanne sombers would have turned 77 today. a shooting at the texas state fair is under investigation, there was an alleged hate crime killing in illinois as well. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the chicago tribune reports an illinois man was charged with a hate crime in the stabbing death of a 6-year-old muslim boy and the wounding of his mother. authorities say 71-year-old joseph tuba committed the act saturday because the victims were muslim and he was upset about the war between israel and hamas. the mother was hospitalized in serious condition. she told police her landlord attacked her. tuba was arrested on several charges including first-degree

murder. the dallas morning news says three people were wounded in a shooting at the texas state fair. dallas police say one man fired at another man saturday night in the fair's food court. authorities say the shooting involved two people who knew each other, fair-goers ran and hid, and the grounds were evacuated, and a 22-year-old man was later arrested, and the victims all sustained nonlife-threatening injuries. "the new york times" says the main suspect in the disappearance of american stuent natalie holloway is expected to plead guilty to extorting her mother. a lawyer for holloway's mother says joran van der sloot reached a deal with federal prosecutors in the u.s. a hearing is set for wednesday in alabama. van der sloot earlier pleaded not guilty to trying to extort $250,000 in exchange for information on holloway's death and the location of her remains. she disappeared in aruba in 2005. still to come, dancing in the aisles. taylor swift fans hit theaters

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. >> there is no shaking taylor swift off. the pop superstar is breaking records at movie theaters box offices. the opening weekend for taylor swift, the eras tour movie, brought in about $96 million in north american theaters. that's the biggest opening for a concert film ever, and it could also be the biggest october movie opening in history. a sign of the times. buying movies on dvds is about to get harder. a major drugstore chain is filing for bankruptcy.

matt piper has today's "money watch". >> futures are up today after stocks mostly fell friday after being pulled in opposite directions by competing waves of optimism and fear over the mid east violence. the dow gained 39. the nasdaq was down 166. the s&p was down 21. rite aid has filed for bankruptcy. the drugstore chain has been grappling with slow sales, mounting debt and lawsuits alleging it contributed to the nation's opioid epidemic. it is also just appointed jeffrey stein as the new ceo and chief restructuring officer, as well as a member of its board. say goodbye to dvds at best buy. the chain plans to phase out its dvd and blu-ray sales by early next year with physical movies set to be sold in stores and online as they have been but only through the holidays. next week netflix will end the iconic red and white envole by mail dvd service. does your favorite candy top the list?

according to instacart, reese's peanut butter cups are the most popular halloween candy and we like our peanuts because peanut m&ms follow and plain m&ms and tootsie pops and rounding out the top five, twizzlers. that's your cbs money watch report for this monday morning. i'm matt piper, cbs news, new york. a coal train derailed off a bridge in colorado killing the driver of a semi truck that was passing underneath the bridge. the train derailed over interstate 25 near pablo. part of the bridge collapsed and mangled train cars and coal across the highway. officials say the driver was killed when the truck was crushed. the ntsb is investigating. the son of the richest man in ecuador will be the country's next president. 35-year-old daniel noboa won a runoff election yesterday. he is the heir of a fortune built on the banana trade. his election comes amid unprecedented violence that saw one candidate killed as he left a campaign rally in august. the new president's term will run through may of 2025.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. for those of you who may have missed it, the sun and the moon put on quite a show saturday. the moon passed between the earth and the sun creating what's called a rare ring of fire eclipse. it is because the moon did not quite cover the sun. the eclipse could be seen from oregon to texas and parts of central and south america. next april, a total solar eclipse will be visible in the u.s. from texas to maine. well, madonna kicked off her much anticipated celebration world tour in london over the weekend. she talked to the crowd about her recent health scare that delayed the tour start.
