cbs news bay area this is the afternoon edition. israel preparing to invade at any moment. to fight hamas o its home turf. thousands of civilians are trapped, desperat to escape as gaza is sealed off . i'm elizabeth cook. israel says they have not agreed to any kind of cease-fir to allow foreigner ins to escap gaza and it seems like a ground attack can happen at any time. this shows troops mobilizing closer to the gaza border, on the ground as it continues to

hammer the area with air to ground missiles. a ground war will be bloody for the israeli army. hamas propaganda video shows how the militants prepare using their web of underground tunnels. for its part the u.s., including secretary of state blinken is pledging sup for israel. showing the uss eisenhower deploying to the mediterranean. meanwhile, palestinians are desperate to get out of gaza. those with due citizenship hoped to get into egypt but they are trapped there. they are not being let in. >> i don't think this makes any sense. we are just leaving here >> meantime the humanitarian crisis is sweeping across gaza. rescue workers tried to retriev casualties from the rubble following the air strikes. basi necessities like food and water

are running dangerously low and in some cases they are drinking saltwater. there have been at least 1400 deaths in israel. israel's military says nearly 200 hostages are being held in gaza meanwhile, gaza officials say israel's bombardment killed at least 2800 people. president jo biden is considering a trip to israel as u.s. troops are put o alert to be ready to deploy to the region. caught in the middl of the war are thousands of children. ian lee is in tel avi with the deva reg rter: liz hun children have been killed in th fighting in gaza. the coastal trip is home to more than a million children. most of them have only known war. tonight, they go to sleep not knowing what the future has in store. with war all around them these young palestinians are still managing to play like children when they are in the park.

>> you see children everywhere you go. >> reporter: this 13-year-old says he and his friends are aware of what is consuming thei lives. >> planes above can bomb at any moment. it is unsafe. it is not fair this is happening t should not be happening. >> reporter: children make up almost half of gaza's population, many living in poverty before this conflict. now they are waiting in long lines for food and water. some living in tents at makeshift shelters. and hundreds are amon the dead and wounded. many from israeli air strikes. here in israel, residents living along the border with gaza are evacuating their homes in fear of hamas. this town was once specifically targeted during th initial attack and has been hit

with rocket strikes. [crying] >> reporter: for others life is at a stand still with loved one held hostage. >> i ask hamas that is holding my family, i hope, again in goo health, please stop and the israel government to stop and bring the woman and children back. >> reporter: is israel says hamas has over 1hostages. hamas says they will kill hostages if palestinian civilians are targeted. one of the goals, one of the objectives of israel's ground invasion to gaza is to free them, liz? >> ian thank you very much. meanwhile a group of tech intelligence and social media experts are volunteering to hel find out what happened to the hostages. believed to be taken by hamas. they are scouring social media and harnessing cutting edge tech like ai to compare the images of the

missing with photos from better times.. >> it hundreds of thousands of pictures to compare. >> how many people do you think are missing in gaza right now? >> hundreds. >> you think it is more than 150? >> yes. i know it is more than 150. >> reporter: the volunteers say it is tough when they have to tell families their loved ones have died. but many prefer to know what really happened versu waiting for answers. meanwhile here in the bay area our choppe caught this peaceful protest at uc berkeley today. demonstrator holding up signs that said free palestine. and forming a large circle in front of the gate. >> we are protesting the occupation of palestine by israel and the bombing of gaza and the killing of innocent lives. we are hoping to get our message out and making them aware of the atrocities. we

believe israel occupies palestine and land belongs to the indigenous palestinians and throughout the past like 70 years israel has been expanding their territory to palestine, killing and displacing palestinians, that is why we ar out here trying to stop it. >> reporter: now, at the same time, demonstrators caring israel flags held a counterprotest condemning the initial attack. >> my friends were killed at th music festival. 3,000 people went to this music festival. 3,000. about 500 young people, celebrating peace, celebrating music, celebrating values for the world. by the border with gaza, celebrating good things. were massacred. >> protests happened over the weekend. thousands gathered at san francisco's ferry building on saturday. to protest the bombing of gaza. in san goas a pro palestinian rally organized

by the palestinian youth movement yesterday. meanwhile, san francisco's district attorney is warning about anti-semitism here in the city. hateful graffiti was spray painted on buildings downtown. the leader of the bay area jewish community relations council says his organization i urging people not to hold counterprotests. >> we are asking people to be vigilant. we are encouraging people not to counterprotest or demonstrate. not worth it. we ned to take the high rode. and, you know, we are doing a lot of multifaith work right now. we are working out to elected officials and minority groups, we like to stand with for socia justice. >> reporter: today, the distric attorney jenkins followed up th post by writing my office is committed to ensuring the safet of all communities in sf and holding accountable those that commit hate crimes against any group. we acknowledge our arab, mus lick and jewish muslim

their civil rights are protecte >> this all comes after a serie of misconduct cases and police shootings over the past few years. the police department must complete the 45 reforms. they will have to be approved b an independent reform evaluator other stories we are following around the bay area today. three people are dead an seven others are injured in separate shootings in oaklandment they happen from friday night to sunday afternoon. the police say all o the incidents are under investigation. meanwhile, oakland is kicking off a series of events meant to prevent violence and promote justice an healing. it is the second annua love life week. >> a lot of tragedy, however, the best way to combat tragedie is to come together, heal together, and love and uplift the town. >> meanwhile the union representing the teachers in sa francisco unified school district is back at the

>> how the hell are we going to get them out? >> and all of this chaos 40 miles from the epi center. >> here is the point. it will b so much worse. first, it is closer to san francisco. it is closer to population centers, i is closer to tall buildings and key infrastructure like bridges and b.a.r.t and everything we care about. >> reporter: the last time the fault snapped was in 1868. and it did a lot of damage. and, it has been more than 150 years. so, is the hayward fault over due? >> it is hard to talk about any fault being overdue. what we ca say is based on the past 10 or so ruptures we think occurred o the fault it is about due. >> oh, scary to hear that. we are about due. >> all right, let's put that aside for a second. first alert weather, mild monday around the bay area, more heat so the way.

our meteorologist darren peck i in the virtual studio. >> liz wednesday, thursday, we are going back to the 90s for the valleys, that is the plain point in the forecast and we will look at all of that in one second. before i get there, there is a cold front coming through right now. we are not concerned about any kind of hea today. instead, we are tracking where the rain might be. you ca tell by looking at the big picture, the best of this peculiar system missed us. went a little too far north. coming in for a close-up look and slow it down we did not get measurable rain here. the futur cast sees what is left of that and maybe brings a few showers, just skirting the far north wes corner of sonoma county. nothin really to write home about. you want to see where it did produc rain? here, far northwest corne of the state getting an inch an a lot more went up to oregon. so, that is done. we want to look ahead to the day time high and what they are going to do for us. jumping ahead, which ar

pretty similar to today. a little warmer. start a subtle warm up tomorrow. in terms of comparing yesterday and today, tuesday's numbers maybe five or six degrees warmer. back in the middle 80s for many of the warmer inland valleys, we are going to watch three days to give you an idea how it goes. skip to tuesday, go right to thursday. when we do that we ar looking at the peak of the warm up, now, instead of middle 80s we have a lot of middle 90s ove here. it is a 10 degree jump. the day you notice this is actually wednesday, i am showin you said this. it is the peak. wednesday the numbers will be close to that. and then, we are going to go right back the othe way in terms of the weekend. watch what happens when we get to saturday. we put those numbers on. we get a color scheme. the numbers go back dow to the middle 70s with a 10% light chance of rain again for another system coming our way. does not look super impressive but the possibility is there. keeping an eye on it. the other thing to keep in mind about thursday, the same time we are getting the warm temperatures, this will be the warm up that

does give us the off shore wind that warms up the beaches. so, on the one hand, wednesday, thursday, nice beach days if yo are lucky enough to have them off. on the other hand, unrelated. there is a lot of wave energy heading towards california that gets here at th exact same time. the national weather service put out any hig surf advisories yet or beach hazard statements. it is likely they will and as soon as they d we will let you know about it. it is an early head's up to be aware. a nice beach day. it wil be somewhat dangerous to be in the water. that covers this par of the forecast. let's get into the seven-day forecast. what we want to take a look at first is inland valleys are, what it wil look like. inland valleys, i will get out of the way. checking out the numbers, going to warm up to the middle 90s here by the time we get to thursday. looking at day time highs that climbed all of the way up to 90 by wednesday. so, it is noticeably warm and it

does come out fast. it does coo down in a hurry. by the time we get towards the weekend you are all of the way back down to the middle 70s. let's do it again and we will bring in the seven-day forecast for the bay. when we do that, the pattern is the same in terms of the warm up. but obviously you are not going as high. still, numbers i the middle to upper 80s. by the time we get to thursday it will be noticeably warm, especially in light of where we are today and where we will be on tuesday the 10% chance of rain there on saturday. that is with the clouds, see you with more in th forecast coming up later this evening. >> all right, thank you very much. >> well, it came down to the final seconds but the 49ers are owning up to the lack luster performance in cleveland. what they are taking away from the first loss of the season. this is pix plus, more loca news in the morning and only 8:00 and 9:00 news. the
