hamas says it was an israeli air strike, but israel says it was a rocket misfire from palestinian militants. the carnage coming as president biden arrives in the war zone. and take two. republican jim jordan will try again today to become speaker of the house. why he failed in the first round vote. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there are new accusations this morning following that massive explosion at a gaza hospital that killed hundreds. just a short time ago the israeli military came out again denying they are to blame. president biden just landed in tel aviv for meetings with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. benjamin netanyahu is there to meet him and greet him at the airport. we're waiting for the president to get off the plane. he is scheduled to have meetings with netanyahu as well as other authorities in israel, but a planned meeting with the

president of the palestinian authority, mahmoud abbas, and the leader of egypt in jordan has been canceled in the wake of this explosion at the hospital in gaza city. as you can see, there are protests throughout the region, as well, in the wake of that explosion. the hope was that the president would be able to negotiates some key goals, showing solidarity with israel, negotiate the release of hostages being held by hamas, and also some sort of humanitarian corridor in order to get humanitarian aid into gaza. all of that is up in the air. cbs' ian lee is joining us from tel aviv with the latest on the developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. yeah, right now we are witnessing a blame game between the israelis and palestinians. both are pointing fingers at each other over who is responsible, but whoever is ultimately to blame, this appears to be the largest single

loss of civilian life in gaza since the war began. president joe biden is set to land in israel this morning amid escalating tensions in the region. a fatal blast at a gaza city hospital has killed dozens including to the health ministry. palestinian leader mahmoud abbas blamed israeli air strikes for the explosion calling it a war crime. >> those responsible for this crime should face just and should face accountability. >> reporter: israel denies responsibility and instead says the blast was caused by misfired rockets launched by islamic jihad. >> according to our intelligence, hamas checked the reports, understood it was an islamic jihad rocket that had misfired and decided to launch a campaign to hide what really happened. >> reporter: president biden said he is outraged and saddened

by the explosion. a summit with the leaders of jordan, egypt, and the palestinians has been canceled. a decision one u.s. official described as mutual. the situation sparked angry protests in multiple middle eastern countries including jordan and lebanon where the state department has issued a do-not-travel advisory. israeli forces and hezbollah fighters have exchanged fire near the lebanese border in recent days. the u.s. has positioned military assets including a force of 2,000 marines and warships in the region to support israel if needed. the president is also reportedly considering a request for $100 billion from congress that would include security assistance for israel and ukraine. president biden says he has directed his national security team to gather information on what happened in that deadly gaza hospital blast. the secretary general of the united nations has also condemned the explosion, and the u.n. security council has

scheduled an emergency meeting today to address the blast. >> ian lee, thank you. there are growing fears the war with hamas will spread north. and into another battle against hezbollah. roxana saberi traveled to the border with lebanon where skirmishes have been breaking out. >> reporter: hezbollah claims it fired anti-tank missiles from lebanon into northern israel after israel said it killed four militants trying to plant explosives on a border wall. the cross-border clashes in are clearing fuels that iran-backed hezbollah could escalate the conflict by hoping a second front against israel. cbs news has witnessed israel's military reinforcing its northern frontier with 360,000 reservists it's mobilizing across the country. we're about six miles south of lebanon here. you see behind me israeli troops, vehicles, and weaponry deployed to this area. they say they're on high alert in case of more attacks by

hezbollah. with tensions intensifying, israel has evacuated 28 communities along the northern border including yiftah kubbutz. around 400 of its residents fled to this hotel in search of safety. >> it was so quickly, and my heart was beating fast. >> reporter: meital yogev, whose husband has been called up to serve in israel's army, brought their two sons, her memories, and her fears. >> i brought those kids into the world, but the world doesn't deserve them because there's so many horrors and pain and suffering on both sides in this conflict. >> reporter: both sides. >> yeah. >> that was roxana saberi reporting. the mother of a french israeli woman being held hostage by hamas in gaza is appealing for her release. cbs news spoke with the mother of 21-year-old mia schem.

on monday, hamas released a video apparently showing the woman with her arm wrapped in bandages. she was abducted along with dozens of others from a music festival in southern israel where at least 260 people were killed. the woman's family did not know if she was dead or alive until the video was released. >> it's very hard to see my daughter. i see the pain. i see that she's in physical pain. i see she's in emotion -- very emotional and very, very scared. >> reporter: do you think that this video might be a sign that hamas wants to negotiate? >> i hope so. i really do. >> the video was one of the first signs of life from any of the nearly 200 hostages thought to be held by hamas. russian president vladimir putin met with chinese president xi jinping in beijing overnight. he told xi that close coordination between the two

countries on foreign policy is crucial in a difficult world. putin is attending a gathering of world leaders to mark the tenth anniversary of china's push to build infrastructure and expand its global influence. and back here at home, the uncertainty and turmoil continues to reign over a leaderless house of representatives. today house judiciary chair jim jordan will try once again to wrestle enough votes to take the gavelar -- rather failing yesterday with 20 of his fellow republicans voting against him. scott macfarlane has the latest developments from capitol hill. >> reporter: ohio republican jim jordan, the right-wing firebrand and close ally of former president donald trump, had been jockeying to be the house speaker, second in line to the presidency. he lost 20 defectors inside his own party. >> the speaker has not been elected. >> reporter: leaving him more than a dozen votes short of the

217 necessary, and the house chamber paralyzed two weeks after removing former speaker kevin mccarthy. jordan said he would try again. >> we're going to keep working. and we're going to get the votes. >> reporter: those who voted against jordan include moderate republicans in districts president biden won in 2020. worried a jordan-led house could sink their own re-election chances. the nine-term republican is the face of the biden impeachment inquiry that has plowed ahead with little evidence. >> the biden justice department tries to sweep it under the rug. >> reporter: two years ago he voted to block the certification of biden's 2020 win. >> i've never said the election was stolen. i said check it out. >> reporter: he was in communication with then-president trump before and oh -- on jiths, as seen on this call log. >> he went over to the white house and helped plot the entire thing. he urged publicly people disgruntled about the election to march on the capitol. >> reporter: jordan has tried to flip those republicans who are opposing him, but it has backfired so far. florida republican carlos giminez blasted jordan's

planes flew within 15 feet. officials say that it's part a trend of risky and aggressive maneuvers they call concerning. alex murdaugh's quest for a new trial clears another hurdle, and ukraine used a new weapon in its arsenal. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand". "the hill" reports ukraine used u.s.-supplied long-range missiles for the first time. yesterday volodymyr zelenskyy confirmed his country used the army tactical missile system. air bases in russian-occupied territory were hit by the missiles. ukraine says nine helicopters, russian military equipment, and runways were destroyed. zelenskyy had pressed the u.s. for months to provide the missile system. "the state" says a south carolina appeals court is allowing alex murdaugh to have a new trial because of alleged jury tampering. he was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison this year for killing his wife and youngest son.

his lawyers say the court clerk at his trial told some of the jurors not to trust murdaugh's testimony and pressured jurors to come to a quick verdict. they plan to file a motion requesting a new trial. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ a manhunt is under way for four inmates who escaped from a central georgia jail early monday morning. police say it appears the four men, one of them an accused murderer, were picked up by someone driving a blue dodge challenger that was parked outside. authorities say the inmates escaped through a broken second floor window and then through a cut fence. they don't believe the four men knew each other before being jailed. the plane suspect in the disappearance of an american student, natalee holloway, is scheduled to appear in court in alabama today where he could plead guilty in exchange for disclosing details about holloway's deaths. joran van der sloot is accused of trying to extort $250,000 from holloway's mother in
