the deal coming one day after the hospital explosion and outrage over who is to blame. ian lee is joining us in tel aviv with the latest developments. clearly despite the fact that the jordan trip was canceled, ian, this was a productive journey. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. that's right. but you know, it's been nearly two weeks since that horrific attack by hamas, and the death toll continues to rise. now surpassing all other conflicts between israel and gaza. while there doesn't seem to be an end to the fighting, the main effort now is getting humanitarian aid to palestinians stuck in the coastal strip. president joe biden returned to washington overnight after his war zone visit to israel. >> i come to israel with a single message -- you're not alone. you are not alone. >> reporter: while there, the president said his priority is the release of nearly 200 hostages being held by hamas, and he pushed to get humanitarian aid to gaza.

>> if you have an opportunity to alleviate the pain, you should do it, period. and if you don't, you're going to lose credibility worldwide. >> reporter: israel's prime minister announced the country will no longer prevent aid from entering into gaza through egypt. president biden's visit here yesterday came as tensions mount over a deadly hospital explosion in gaza for which both sides blamed each other. the president and u.s. officials are backing israel's explanation that the blast, which killed hundreds, was caused by a misfired rocket launched by palestinian militants. but the incident sparked outrage with fresh protests in the middle east and around the world, including in the u.s. [ chants ] hundreds gathered on capitol hill yesterday to demand a cease-fire with police estimating as many as 300 arrests. federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies are now warning that fighting between israel and hamas has led to increased threats against jewish and muslim communities. israel's aerial bombardment of

gaza continues with troops amassed and standing by for an anticipated ground invasion. the number of people killed on both sides of the fighting is now closing in on 5,000 including 31 americans. the white house says 13 americans are missing in gaza, while the u.s. state department is advising the hundreds of americans trapped in gaza to make their way to the border with egypt. anne-marie? >> all right, ian lee in tel aviv, thank you so much. all the families of the hostages can do now is worry and wait for word of their loved ones. one person believed to be held by hamas is described as an all-american kid who went to israel to find his roots. jim axelrod has his incredible story. >> reporter: on long island, new york, omar neutra's family and fence are in anguish. orna and ronan neutra got a call from the israeli consulate

commander near gaza when news of the attack broke. >> immediately i texted him, what's going on? nothing. we called him, nothing. >> reporter: what can you tell us about what you know happened? >> we know that the army did an investigation. from what they've shared and the videos that we're shown, their conclusion is that him and his team have been taken. >> we are a mission. >> reporter: a mission focused on action. this is not a time for tears. >> tears come at night, and i've been showering so much because i cry in the shower. and i just let it out. and then i come out and i'm -- i have to refocus again. >> reporter: making sure that focus is on getting omar and the others back. >> they've done nothing wrong. let them go home. it's not that hard. we are all humans. >> reporter: and refusing to surrender their hope.

jim axelrod, cbs news, new york. cbs news will bring you president biden's address to the nation tonight on the israel-hamas war and russia's war in ukraine in a special report. it's expected to start at 8:00 p.m. eastern. the house again failed to elect a speaker. judiciary chairman jim jordan came up short yesterday in a second round of voting. the ohio congressman lost more republican support than he did the day before. 22 colleagues voted against him compared to 20 on tuesday. he's vowing to stay in the race. >> i already proven i can get from the most conservative members of the conference to the more moderate members of the conference. so -- whole cross section of the conference, it's important that we get the last few. >> a bipartisan group of lawmakers is considering a plan to give interim speaker patrick mchenry more power until a new speaker is elected. and 18 years after natalee

holloway vanished on a school trip to aruba her suspected killer finally comes clean, confessing in open court to the murder. joran van der sloot admitted to chilling details how he killed the teen and dumped her body into the sea. janet shamlian has emotional reaction from holloway's mother. >> reporter: joran van der sloot confessed to the crime he's long been suspected of -- killing natalee holloway on an aruba beach after she refused to have sex with him. >> it's better than closure because our never-ending nightmare had to end, and we are so grateful that we can say that today. >> reporter: the dutch national's admission was part of a plea deal. after trying to extort $250,000 from beth holloway to reveal what happened to her daughter. in a recorded interview with investigators, with beth holloway watching from another room, van der sloot described how afternoon natalee kneed him in the groin he smashed her head with a cinderblock and dragged

the high school senior into the water. what was it like to hear and see that in real time, to hear him discuss what he did to your daughter? >> it's shocking. it's almost as if it just blisters your soul when you hear it. >> reporter: in a heart-wrenching victim statement, holloway told van der sloot, "you terminated her potential when you bludgeoned her," calling her pain indescribable with grief that lives deep in my soul. >> she was killed just by standing her ground. >> reporter: you didn't know that. >> no, i hadn't -- i didn't know nothing. >> reporter: authorities say van der sloot's account passed a polygraph test. the judge imposed the maximum 20 years, but he'll serve it at the same time he's serving a sentence for the murder of another young woman in peru. there were dozens of family members and natalee's friends in the courtroom. many breaking down when beth holloway addressed the court saying, "i will live my life with the beautiful memories of who natalee was and what she could have become."

"the new york post" reports on new details that could link the suspected gilgo beach killer to the unsolved deaths of two prostitutes. that's after a new witness came forward. earlier this year, rex heuermann was charged with murdering three sex workers on new york's long island. he's also the prime suspect in a fourth murder. police say they're interviewing new witnesses who allegedly had unsettling encounters with rex heuermann that could link him to the unsolved deaths.

"the atlanta journal constitution" says georgia officials released georgia officials released videos from a deadly i-95 traffic stop. >> hands behind your back! >> reporter: one of the videos shows a violent struggle on monday between a sheriff's between sheriff's deputy leonard cur. he was pulled over for allegedly going more than 100 miles per hour. during the struggle, the deputy shot and killed cure. he spent more than 16 years in prison on a robbery conviction that was later overturned. the deputy has been placed on leave pending an investigation. and the "orlando sentinel" says the city has a deal to buy the pulse nightclub where dozens were killed in a mass shooting. orlando's mayor says the city plans to purchase the site for $2 million and build a memorial to the victims. the gunman opened fire at the gay nightclub killing 49 people. at the time it was the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. city council must still approve

or injuries. this was the third quake above a magnitude four that was -- that has struck northern california this week. and all eyes on the fed today, and get ready to pay more for netflix. jarred hill has today's "money watch." >> reporter: u.s. stocks took a hit wednesday. the dow snapped a three-day winning streak losing 332 points. nasdaq fell 219, and the s&p 500 dropped 58 points. that uncertainty on wall street comes ahead of a potential consequential speech today from fed chair jerome powell. analysts are looking to see if powell gives an indication of how long we can expect higher interest rates to stick around as the fed continues to try and cool inflation. netflix is raising its prices again. starting this week, basic users paying $9.99 a month will have to pay $11.99. if you've got premium, that $19.99 subscription jumps to $22.99. the company says the price hikes will help to grow their content.
