from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. >> the heat is really peaking right now and getting close to some records on this first alert weather day. we are tracking the temps and the rapid cool down. did you get that early morning wake-up call ? why your phone may have woken you up hours ahead of the state's planned earthquake drill. president biden gets ready to address the nation about the u.s. response to the israel hamas war while new signs emerge that israel's ground invasion could come at any time. i'm reed. it is pretty

unusual for it to get this hot in october. heat advisory remains in effect right now and we have declared today another first alert weather day. let's get right to chief meteorologist paul heggen. >> this is the peak of the heat. tomorrow will bring some relief. by the time the weekend rolls around, it will feel like october. blue skies overhead. air quality has not been great but it also has not been bad in most locations around the bay area. let's talk about temperatures and where they stand right now. a lot of 90s on the map. 94 the degrees in santa rosa and in napa. 90 in concord and 91 record in san jose. we don't get the official climate data from the official weather service until 5:15 but there will be a number of records likely to fall across the bay area today. temperatures will return to near average around the bay. still several degrees above normal further inland but in the low 80s in concord and san jose as opposed to the low to

mid 90s. temperatures will drop a huge step from friday to saturday. b.a.r.t. is running trains at slower speeds until 7:00 p.m. due to the heat. this impacts trains between pleasant hill in concord and el cerrito del norte and richmond. those earthquake alerts you probably have been getting on your phone, they are a good reminder for all of us to always be earthquake ready. today, it was literally a wake up call. a test alert to drop, cover, and hold on accidentally went off at 3:19 in the morning for people with the myshake app on their phones. myshake, for its part, blames a configuration glitch. that alert started a lot of you awake and some of you went to social media to post about it. the real earthquake test alerts did go out at 10:19 a.m. as planned for the annual statewide earthquake drill known as the great shakeout. all week, teams have been

traveling across the state to promote today is shakeout and prepare for an earthquake. quakes are sudden and unexpected just like yesterday smiled shaker in sacramento county. >> if you have thought in advance about what would you would do in places where you spend a lot of time , you will be more prepared to take rapid action when the earthquake does occur. >> according to a 2014 study by the usgs, the probability of the bay area having a major earthquake magnitude 6.7 or higher before 2043 is 72%.

let s take a live look at the white house where president biden is planning a primetime address following his trip to israel to explain the u.s. response to the conflict between israel and gaza. today, there are new signs israel ground assault on gaza could be imminent. meanwhile, the airstrikes continue. this is new video of burning projectiles seen lighting up the gaza city skyline. there have also been blasts to the south. the explosion was heard near a hospital in gaza in the south. you can see it sent people running for cover. many people had fled to the south, searching for safety. as for humanitarian aid, a cargo plane took off from russia, heading to egypt today. eight includes basic food staples totaling 27 tons to eventually be brought into gaza. tina kraus is in tel aviv for us with more on the new signs this wort is about to get even more intense. >> reporter: israeli tanks are parked near the border with gaza, waiting for the order to

roll. there are new signs tonight that that order could come soon. tens of thousands of reserve troops are getting into place, ready to take on hamas and bring their hostages home. >> reporter: israel's defense minister told troops gathered at the gaza border that they will soon see hamas territory from the inside, signaling a ground invasion could come soon. the israeli military has updated the number of hostages being held by hamas to more than 200. devastated family members are calling for their immediate release. >> stop now and release all children, babies, elderly, women that are not part of this war. >> reporter: a day after president biden's visit, britain s prime minister arrived in israel to show his support. >> i am proud to stand here with you and israel's darkest hour. we will stand with you in

solidarity. >> reporter: he also mourned innocent palestinian civilians caught in the crossfire of israel's blistering airstrikes on hamas in retaliation for its brutal october 7 terrorist attacks. israel has agreed to allow humanitarian aid into gaza to relieve the suffering of civilians while hamas continues to fire rockets across the border. here in tel aviv, we have been hearing sirens sounding the alarm. this resident showed us debris he says came from a rocket intercepted by israel's iron dome defense system. he says it is up to hamas to end this war. >> when we put down our weapons, they attack us. if they put down their weapons, there will be peace. >> reporter: israel has said it would allow no aid into gaza until hamas releases the hostages but with more than 1 million palestinians displaced from their homes, the first delivery of food, water, and medicine could begin arriving tomorrow. the us state department says it is watching closely to make sure that aid

ends up with civilians and not in the hands of hamas. in tel aviv, i'm tina kraus. among the hostages is american omar neutra, the grand son of holocaust survivals. hamas launched its attack and we heard from his mother. >> tears come at night. i have been showering so much because i cry in the shower. i just let it out and then i come out and i have to refocus again. >> calls for a cease-fire are growing. leaders of the bay area office of the council on american islamic relations, alongside local palestinian americans urged state officials to support a cease-fire. >> it is our moral responsibility to seek an end to this violence and to ensure the safety and well-being of all of those affected. the

question to us is how could we allow this to happen? have we lost our morality? it is that simple. we can't be silent. we have to speak up for justice. we have to stand up for truth. >> officials from the council say there is a growing sense of unease and fear over safety among the bay area palestinians and islamic immunities as a result of what is happening in the middle east. governor gavin newsom posted on x today that he is on his way to israel. he says he will be, quote, meeting with those impacted by the horrific terrorist attacks and offering california's support. the u.s. state department has issued and scaler telling u.s. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution due to increased tensions in various locations around the world and the potential for terrorist attacks. demonstrations or violent actions against u.s. citizens and interests. we will carry president biden's primetime address right here on kpix, set to begin at

charges have been filed nearly 4 months after that rolling gunbattle along the embarcadero. is happened back on father's day. the shoot outstretched from pier 39 to howard street. two cars were involved in the shooting. a total of six people were injured. officers arrested two of the suspects, one of them a teenager and a third suspect was already in custody. here is what officer sees while executing search warrants. multiple handguns, assault rifles and ammunition. >> today, i am here to announce that we have been able to file charges against one of the individuals already and that is mr. xavier pittman . we have filed charges for conspiracy and for two counts of auto burglary. >> da brooke jenkins says an additional suspect is also in custody in alameda county and he will be moved to san francisco to face charges. a muni bus struck and killed a pedestrian overnight just before 1:00 a.m. you can see the shattered windshield of the bus there. authorities are

investigating how that collision happened. days after announcing its bankruptcy filing, rite aid says it plans to close 154 stores nationwide and that includes three stores in our area. the rite aid locations on homestead road in cupertino, el camino real and santa clara and southern california avenue in santa cruz will close. rite aid filed for chapter 11 in order to restructure amid slumping sales and mounting opioid-related lawsuits. engineers at uc san diego have created an experimental vaccine that could prevent the spread of cancer in the lungs. doctors say the vaccine does not eliminate tumors but rather prevents new tumors from forming and spreading. so far, it has only been tested in mice. more safety studies are needed before human trials can begin. scientists will soon be

able to screen a patient for diabetes just by having them speak into their smart phone. researchers with click labs say that there are subtle changes in vocal pitch and intensity in people with type ii diabetes. while humans can't detect the changes, ai can. the hope is to develop a smart phone app that can quickly and easily test people for diabetes. let's get back to our first alert weather day. near record heat across the bay area today. by the water, like in pacifica, high surf is making for dangerous conditions there. >> a high surf warning continues until 7:00 p.m. today but this is the kind of day where people are flocking to the coast to get away from that heat and linda. we have big changes on the way because of the heat dome shifting to the east and southeast and there is a storm system in the gulf of alaska that will be diving down close enough to us to kick in the onshore breeze. it will

send more clouds toward us on saturday and even a chance of showers for the second half of the weekend on sunday. it will help to improve our air quality which has been in the moderate area but we have seen some orange dots on the air-quality map inland of the east bay around livermore. air-quality should take a step up tomorrow and then good air-quality across the board by saturday, sunday and monday. you can see the haze as we look out to the top of mount diablo. temperatures right now in the mid-80s in the san francisco and oakland. inland temperatures where we expected them to be. 91 degrees is the current temperature in san jose and it also happens to be today's record high temperature. it is likely that will be erased from the books. we will get that official data from the national weather service just after 5:00 this evening. temperatures are going to drop off. we will lose most of the heat that we have built up today because we have clear skies overhead and long

nighttime hours. temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 50s, the warmest spots near or above 60 degrees. high temperatures tomorrow, back to the mid to upper 60s. temperatures still in the low to mid 80s in the santa clara valley. it is a whole lot closer to where we are supposed to be. mostly low to mid 80s, warmest spots east of mt. diablo. upper 60s and low 70s. inland of the north bay, not quite as warm as the east bay or the santa clara valley. when you go further north, temperatures in inland mendocino county are likely to get up into the mid to upper 80s. let's take a look at futurecast. we have some changes in store not just for temperatures but in the amount of cloud cover you see. the marine layer will be evident by the time the sun goes down tomorrow evening. it will make a big inland push into tomorrow night and saturday morning. despite the cloudy start, we

will see a mix of clouds and sunshine. the first half of the weekend looks dry but then another wave of clouds moves in a saturday night and we will see a few green freckles showing up. that is where we have the best chance for a few hit or miss showers through sunday. it is not going to rain everywhere all the time but we are talking about a chance for a couple of showers here or there. here is the 7-day forecast. temperatures in the san francisco running below average for most of the 7-day outlook. the exception is on monday when we see a brief little warm-up with a return to the light offshore breeze . that is a far cry from where we are today. inland temperatures, a big drop tomorrow. temperatures will stay near those below average temperatures on sunday but then that kicks in for inland parts of the bay area as well . we settle back down to where we

are supposed to be in late october by wednesday and thursday of next week. let s take a live look at chase center where the warriors are hosting open practice starting at 5:30. tickets are just $5 with the proceeds benefiting the warriors community foundation. the dubbs host the phoenix sons and their home opener next tuesday. bad bunny just announced his most wanted tour is coming to san francisco this spring. the three-time grammy winner will hit the stage on march 1 and march 2. registration for access to tickets is open now until sunday online. the 49ers have a tough opponent ahead in the vikings but see why that is not the only challenge they will be facing on the road on monday night.
