president biden with an urgent message to americans warning their security depends on two wars both fought half a world away. his appeal to fund the armies of america's allies. meanwhile, israel intensifying its air strikes on gaza after the president's visit as troops are told to be ready to move in. and the first american shots are fired. a u.s. warship intercepts missiles and drones that may have been heading to israel. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today president biden is expected to host european union leaders at the white house. with the conflicts in israel and ukraine likely to be on the agenda. in a primetime address last night, the president called for billions of dollars in aid for israel and ukraine and also denounced hate in all forms. the deal to get aid into gaza through rafah, the territory's only connection to egypt, remains fragile.

more than 200 trucks and some 3,000 tons of aid are positioned near the border which is expected to open today. the escalating tensions prompting the u.s. state department to issue a worldwide caution alert for any americans overseas due to the threat of potential terror attacks or violent demonstrations. ian lee now in tel aviv. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. israel willneed that critical military aid as the ground invasion looms and weapons stockpiles run low. the defense minister says that the invasion will happen soon. the general in charge of israel's southern command told troops it will be a long and intense fight. but this comes as residents in gaza run out of critical humanitarian aid. >> we're facing an inflection point in history -- >> reporter: president biden made the case for his $100 billion funding request to

congress which would include support for israel and ukraine. >> it's a smart investment that's going to pay dividends for american security for generations. >> reporter: the president said he doesn't want to see u.s. troops fighting in either conflict zone. hours before his address, a u.s. navy ship intercepted missiles and drones launched by houthi rebels in yemen that were potentially headed to israel. >> it is our aim to avoid any regional expansion of israel's conflict with hamas, but we stand ready and prepared to protect and defend our partners and our interests. >> reporter: president biden pledged to give $100 million in humanitarian aid to palestinian civilians during his trip this week. he struck a deal to move trucks filled with aid to egypt to gaza. hundreds of thousands of displaced palestinians are now in desperate need of water, food, and fuel. she says all she wants is a truce so she can go home. while visiting his troops, israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, declared his nation will win with full force. the conflict there has ignited tensions globally and in the u.s.

>> here in the united states a little boy who just turned 6 years old was murdered. his name was wadea. >> reporter: president biden evoked the name of the palestinian american boy stabbed to death in chicago in his pleas to resist hate. he later held a phone call with the child's father and uncle. despite u.s. officials hoping to keep this conflict contained we are seeing violence in the border. there was an uptick in violence. you have the situation with the houthis in yemen. in recent days, officials say american forces have been syria.edly attacked in iraq and- anne-marie? >> all very concerning. ian, thank you very much. well, the number of americans killed in the israel-hamas conflict has grown now to 32. the number of hostages held by hamas is up to 203. roxana saberi spoke to one israeli family whose hope for

their captured loved one has turned to heartbreak. i think it's everyone's greatest nightmare. >> reporter: the outcome abby was dreading. she said authorities confirmed they found the bodies of her cousin, 80-year-old carmela dan, an israeli american citizen, and dan's 12-year-old granddaughter noya. tell me about noya. >> she is a "harry potter" fan. she dresses as harry potter. she was a 12-year-old with autism. she was very, very close with her grandmother. >> reporter: your cousin, what was she like? >> she was the matriarch of the family. she and her husband deeply believed in peace, as everyone who lived there did. >> reporter: she believed hamas fighters took her relatives hostage after attacking the kibbutz in southern israel. for one of every four people were killed or went missing. but dan's family held out hope she was alive, holding a birthday party for her on tuesday. >> we gathered, all of us, to hug each other and to be together and to try to

strengthen one another thinking that she would come home. >> reporter: do you think she was already dead? >> we believe so, yes. >> reporter: owen, also israeli american, still has three other relatives missing including this 11-year-old boy who owen says appears in this video released by hamas, along with his big sister and their father. do you believe that your other three family members are still alive? >> i do. >> reporter: roxana saberi, cbs news, tel aviv. breaking overnight, police in maryland are searching for a suspect after a judge was shot and killed. officials say 52-year-old circuit court judge andrew wilkinson was found in the driveway of his home in hagerstown last night with what appears to be gunshot wounds. they're calling his death a homicide. the maryland government website says wilkinson has been a judge since january of 2020. and the house is expected to vote again today to try and elect a speaker

according to congressman jim jordan's office. the ohio republican failed to obtain enough votes in two ballots earlier this week, losing more gop support on wednesday than he did the day before. that's apparently not stopping him from trying again. >> i'm still running for speaker, and i plan to go to the floor and get the votes and win this race. >> jordan said he would back a plan to give interim speaker patrick mchenry more power temporarily so the house can get back to business, but some fellow republicans are against that, as well. the first of former president trump's co-defendants in the georgia election interference case goes on trial today. jury selection is set for today in the case against trump legal adviser kenneth chesebro. he was expected to be tried alongside former trump lawyer sidney powell, but she suddenly copped a plea yesterday and now plans to testify against any and all of the other co-defendants, including the former president. robert costa has details. >> reporter: sidney powell, the

conspiracy peddling former attorney for former president trump, sat in a fulton county courtroom and admitted to her role in the breach of voting systems in georgia. >> are you pleading guilty today because you agree that there is a sufficient factual basis, that there are enough facts that support this plea of guilty? >> i do. >> reporter: powell was sentenced to six years probation, will pay thousands in fines, and write an apology letter to the citizens of georgia. along with trump, she was one of 19 defendants in the case brought by district attorney fani willis. powell agreed to testify truthfully against her co-defendants at future trials. >> if i'm donald trump or i'm donald trump's lawyer, i would certainly not be happy. >> reporter: beyond georgia, powell was a central figure in pushing trump's false elections denial claims. >> president trump won by a landslide. >> reporter: in a now-infamous december, 2020, oval office showdown, powell pushed to seize voting machines to look for fraud. and although trump entertained her conspiracy theories, some

girl's family watched. everyone was brought back down safely, though. an american journalist was detained in russia, and a u.s. soldier who fled to north korea is facing multiple charges. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "reuters" reports the u.s. army charged a private with desertion and other crimes after he ran into north korea. 23-year-old travis king was supposed to be transported from south korea to the u.s. in july to face disciplinary action. he slipped away and managed to cross over into north korea. he was released last month and returned to the u.s. the army charged king with desertion, assaulting other soldiers, and soliciting and possessing child pornography. according to court documents. "usa today" says a soldier was arrested after failing to register as a foreign agent. alsu kurmasheva is an editor for

radio free europe radio liberty which is funded by the u.s. government. russian state media said she's accused of collecting information about the military activities in order to transmit the information to foreign sources. the committee to protect journalists says she could be sentenced to five years in prison if convicted. and "the new york times" says alex jones will not be allowed to use bankruptcy to avoid paying damages to the families of a mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school. last year jones was ordered to pay more than $1 billion in damages to some of the relatives of the 20 students and six adults killed in the 2012 attack. they sued him for defamation for repeatedly lying about it being a hoax. the judge said he will have to pay despite filing bankruptcy. still to come, george clooney's multimillion dollar lifeline. the oscar winner makes a generous offer to help striking actors. ing actors. - [narrator] wounded warrior project helped me find the strength to go further

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ well, it's a sure sign that the holiday season is upon us. the radio city rockettes have begun rehearsals for this year's christmas spectacular in new york city. this year the troupe welcomed 14 new rockets from ten states. opening day is november 17th. cvs is pulling some over-the-counter cold meds off the shelves, and netflix opening a brick and mortar. here's jarred hill with more. wall street took another tumble thursday. all three major indices fell following a signal from the federal reserve that more interest rate hikes could be on the horizon. the dow dropped 250 points. the nasdaq, 128, and the s&p 500 fell 36 points.

going up for auction next month. the estimated price -- $1.4 million. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this friday morning. i'm jarred hill, cbs news, new york. days after elon musk announced that the social media platform x may begin charging an annual fee, the tech giant unveiled another plan. overnight musk revealed that two new tiers of x premium will be launching soon. he said that one of the lower cost versions will have all the features but also all the advertisements, and the other option is more expensive but no ads. no word on the cost. some top hollywood actors are stepping in with their wallets to try and end the actors' strike. george clooney and others have offered $150 million to the actors union as part of a proposal to end the more than three-month-old strike. they're proposing giving the union the money over three years, as well as help fund improved health benefits.
