assault by israel into gaza could happen at any moment. israeli tanks are positioned near the border in president biden is set to ask congress for roughly $100 billion in emergency spending, including assistance for israel. tina kraus begins coverage from tel aviv. >> reporter: secretary of state antony blinken confirms hamas has released two u.s. hostages, the mother and daughter, judith tai and natalie shoshana raanan were held for two weeks. the women were abducted along with about 200 others when hamas attacked israel october 7. >> our position is clear. every hostage needs to be released and needs to be released now. in israel, families hostages gathered friday at a massive shabbat table set with 203 empty seats. >> i hope they will hear us and feel us as we feel them every

day. we believe in them that they are strong and they can make it. >> reporter: in gaza city, residents are mourning victims of an israeli airstrike that damaged art of a church where christians and muslims were taking refuge. palestinian health officials say more than a dozen were killed. israel's military says it was targeting a militant command center. >> nobody is safe in gaza regardless of religion, regardless of your involvement in anything. >> reporter: civilians are struggling. israel has cut off food, fuel, water and medicine. the you in a secretary-general visited the crossing from egypt into gaza friday morning, pleading for humanitarian aid to be allowed through as soon as possible. >> it is essential to protect civilians and to make humanitarian aid come to the palestinians. >> i believe within the next 24 to 48 hours, the first 20 trucks will come across.

programs the civilian death toll mounts, all sides are watching what the next hours and days will bring. >> the palestinian health ministry says more than 4100 palestinians, including hundreds of children, have been killed in gaza with another 13,000 wounded. israel says 1400 of its citizens have died since the hamas attacked almost 2 weeks ago. the release of two hostages today, mother and daughter with dual citizenship, is seen as a sliver of hope. we spoke about it this afternoon with the host of race the nation, margaret brennan. >> it also shows that the diplomatic channels being used by the government of qatar to help put pressure on hamas and urge them to do a humanitarian release has worked, at least for these two individuals. there are now 200 or so hostages still being held. it is a beginning and we will see if there are further releases

or if this affects the timing of what is expected to be an israeli invasion of gaza. new video out of sacramento now. groups including the council on american-islamic relations and jewish voice for peace holding a rally on the west lawn of the state capital. they are calling for an immediate stop to end the violence in the middle east. california governor gavin newsom is in israel. he met with israel's president, isaac herzog. california is sending medical supplies to the region . after israel, governor newsom heads to china for a summit focusing on climate change. bay area groups are letting their voices be heard, calling for an immediate cease-fire on both sides of this war. in san francisco, some demonstrators outside the federal building chained themselves to the walls yesterday in a protest that build a city block. others carried the palestinian flag along with signs that read, americans for palestine and pelosi, cease-fire now. some gathered for a candlelight vigil at manny's in the mission

last night to recognize all the innocent lives that have been lost in this war. some say they welcomed the help president biden is offering but many fear most of the aid will come in the form of weapons. >> it is more money for arms. the arms have to be people holding arms with each other, joining together. that is what i want to see. >> it is very hard to know what the right thing is. the only thing that i think is that killing each other is not the right thing. >> an sfo traveler reacting to the message from the state department telling them to be on alert as tensions in the middle east and elsewhere heat up. they talked to our shawn chitnis. >> reporter: here at the international terminal, we are meeting more passengers who are familiar with this new guidance but they are not as concerned as they get ready to fly outside of the country. the state department is calling this a worldwide caution

because of increased tensions in various locations around the globe including potential terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against u.s. citizens. the state apartment is telling u.s. citizens to stay alert and popular locations for tourists while abroad and they also say you should sign up for the smart traveler enrollment program to receive alerts and make it easier for the government to locate you if you are in an emergency overseas. we spoke to a couple of people who tell us they won't do anything different. >> this is the world we live in. it is a complicated situation but we are not staying home. we have planned this for a long time and we are going to go through. >> i think they are always saying stuff like this and i travel internationally all the time and i have not seen anything weird. >> experts so you can be better prepared by knowing where the u.s. embassy is when you are in another country as well as locating any nearby hospitals. you should also make sure your passport is with you at all

months of rallying and picketing to voice commands. union members in the san francisco board of education still need to vote on the agreement before it becomes official. the drugstore chain cvs is pulling some of its most popular cold and cough medicines from its shelves. the company says it will stop selling certain pills, syrup some liquids that contain the oral decongestant phenylephrine as the only active ingredient. this comes just over a month after an fda panel determined over-the-counter cold and allergy medications with that ingredient don't work. they are not effective. for people who live with adhd, certain tasks can be helpful. endeavor otc is a videogame that targets the parts of the brain involved in attention control. it has been in development for 10 years and went through clinical trials and has been presented to the fda. in the game, you have to pay very close attention and steer a character through a world while avoiding

grain of sand into a pearl. experts say one tiny shellfish may play a big role in curbing the impacts of climate change. we took a closer look at the olympian quest to keep them thriving. >> reporter: at this oyster depot in san francisco, the line forms early. if you are lucky to get a seat, you are in for a treat. >> we just had the olympia oysters, which were phenomenal. >> reporter: the olympia waster, small as a silver dollar but big in flavor. they are the only oyster native to the west coast. >> i grew up eating this oyster and i think -- >> olympia's are not endangered but their numbers have dramatically declined, largely due to overharvesting during the gold rush as well as pollution and loss of habitat. now, scientists, researchers and volunteers are working to restore them in the wild where they once historically thrived. >> we are here to bring back

oysters. >> dr. kiersten watson is leading the pioneering effort at this estuary in the heart of monterey bay. >> we are doing it with optimism and hoping that if we can bring back 1 million oysters, they will be self-sustaining. today is one step toward the goal. >> the restored oysters won't be harvested. their intended role is to filter water, stabilize the shoreline, provide habitat for other creatures, all big and if it says the planet warms. >> it is important that we help to restore the population. >> first stop, a hatchery. >> we have baby individual oysters. >> here, wild olympia's are borrowed to breed babies that will go back to the slew. >> and a hatchery, we can control the environment and make sure that the little babies make it through to being juveniles. >> oysters require tender love

and care, microalgae for food, the right temperatures and plenty of fresh water. >> they are very needy and very dirty. they are really fun to take care of but they need a lot of attention. >> reporter: when ready, they will attach to hard surfaces including these large clamshells. the team carefully gathers the oyster encrusted shells, puts them in special bags and packs them in a cooler. next stop, the slew. >> i believe that natural habitats should be maintained. >> the work is unusual. >> may record the data and then secure each clamshell to a pvc pipe. once the oysters are accounted for, the rubber boot

weekend. >> cloudy skies are fueling the bay this afternoon. temperatures are a lot cooler than where they were at yesterday. yesterday we had a huge heat wave sweep its way through. heading into this we can, it is as though it never happened. we are seeing rain in the forecast. this trickles in early sunday morning, all throughout the morning hours and then it clears up into the evening hours a night giving us some rain. about half an engineer fairfield. yesterday we were talking about 80s in the forecast. today, completely opposite. we are talking about 60s today in san francisco, all the way up into santa rosa. just yesterday we were talking about upper 90s, close to the triple digits anywhere from santa rosa all throughout the east bay and into the santa clara valley where we are

seeing a little bit of that haze but it will clear up into this afternoon. it will be beautiful for us today. let's take a quick look at what is happening. i already mentioned a light spackle of showers throughout the bay area on sunday morning. it clears up and then we are left with sunny skies to kick off next week. a little bit of a warm-up compared to sunday but nothing as drastic as yesterday into today. 70s all widespread throughout our inland areas today. as we take a look at the bay area forecast, beautiful conditions. we are talking about 60s today and tomorrow, 70s into next week . we will all feel that warm-up into next work week and school week but the clouds will hold on tight to the coast and along the bay. today, golden state warriors fans are bidding a fond farewell to andre iguodala. he is retiring. he is reportedly stepping off the court to focus on his startup investments. he spent nearly 2
