steps up air strikes on gaza. troops clash with hamas terrorists in what appears to be the first ground skirmishes inside the territory. a protest turns violent. the wild scene at a pro-palestinian rally when someone allegedly drives a car through a crowd. and speakerless. three weeks and counting without a house speaker, and now at least nine republicans are seeking the gavel. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israel intensifying its air strikes on three fronts, sparking fears of a wider war as the jewish state ready for a ground invasion. israel putting the number of hostages held by hamas at 222. the second aid convoy arriving in gaza yesterday carrying water, food, and medical supplies to help with the humanitarian crisis there. the u.s. is increasing its military presence in the middle east and sending more air defenses in response to rising tensions. secretary of state antony

blinken says the u.s. is prepared to respond if american forces become a target. and a new warning for americans in lebanon. the state department is urging u.s. citizens to leave while they can due to the unpredictable situation. cbs' ian lee is joining us from tel aviv with the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the ground invasion hasn't happened yet, and now we are hearing reports the u.s. is asking the israelis to hold off for now. there are fears that once it begins, all negotiations to release those hostages will end. the u.s. also wants to secure the flow of humanitarian aid into gaza, and this comes amid reports of ground fighting in gaza. hamas says it ambushed an israeli tank and two bulldozers, destroying them. israel is only saying a soldier was killed and three others injured when they came under fire from an anti-tank missile. the white house says president joe biden and israeli prime

minister benjamin netanyahu have agreed to a continued flow of humanitarian aid from egypt into gaza. dozens of trucks carrying food, water, and medicine have crossed into the region since saturday, though the united nations warns that that assistance does not include desperately needed fuel. >> in three, four days we will have no fuel anymore in gaza. and what does it mean? no fuel, no water, no bakery, no running a hospital. >> reporter: israeli defense forces say they launched strikes on more than 320 targets in the gaza strip overnight. they also continue to exchange fire with iran-backed hezbollah fighters near the northern border shared with lebanon. the fighting there is fanning fears that the conflict could expand. a bipartisan group of u.s. senators in tel aviv issued this warning to tehran -- >> if this war grows, it's coming to your backyard. >> reporter: behind me is the border with lebanon. in the last few minutes we've heard artillery, there's also

the buzzing of a drone which underscores the tension in this region. prime minister netanyahu visited with troops near the lebanese border sunday telling them if hezbollah joins the war it would be, quote, the worst mistake of its life. the state department has issued a do-not-travel warning for u.s. citizens to lebanon and is urging americans there to leave, calling the security situation unpredictable. a war with lebanon would make gaza look like a side show. hezbollah has more missiles, and they're more sophisticated than the ones used by hamas. the militant group has tens of thousands of fighters battle hardened for more than a decade of fighting in the syrian civil war. >> ian lee in tel aviv, thank you. pro-israeli and pro-palestinian protests continue across the world. yesterday in minneapolis, police say witnesses reported someone driving their vehicle through a crowd holding a rally in support of palestinians.

there were no reports of injuries, and no victims have come forward. common ground on who will be the next speaker. that leaves congress paralyzed ads as proposed packages for aid to go to israel and ukraine is in limitation bow. nine members will make their case during a speaker forum later today. here's cbs' skyler henry. congress is a lot like high school but more so. >> reporter: a divided republican conference on what's now day 19 of no house speaker. >> i have to say, it's my tenth term in congress, this is probably one of the most embarrassing things i've seen. because if we don't have a speaker of the house, we can't govern. >> reporter: there are nine house republicans who say they want the speakership. the announcements come after ohio congressman jim jordan failed after three rounds to get the 217 votes needed to earn the position. seven of those candidates voted to decertify the 2020 election results following the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol.

former wyoming congresswoman liz cheney who lost her bid for re-election last year blames the dysfunction in the lower chamber on supporters of former president donald trump. >> i think it's important to not be an election denier, and i think everybody should be asked tomorrow at the candidate forum about this issue of ukraine assistance. >> reporter: a handful of hard-liners say more aid to ukraine is a non-starter, but funding to help israel's war with hamas has wide bipartisan support. the senate is expected to soon pass its owner own -- it says own version of an aid package to assist countries and supplies at the southern border putting more pressure on the house to act. >> this is not a moment in time to play around with learning on the job. we need someone who understands how to do this job. >> reporter: skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. senator bob menendez is expected to plead not guilty today in federal court in new york. he's facing a new charge of conspiracy to act as a foreign agent of the egyptian government.

his wife and a business associate pleaded not guilty in the case last week. menendez and his wife earlier pleaded not guilty to charges of taking bribes in exchange fo political favors. and turning now to several legal cases involving former president donald trump. in new york, a federal appeals court today looks at trump's defamatory comments about writer e. jean carroll. trump claims his comments about the writer in 2019 were covered by presidential immuniti. the defamation trail is set for january. earlier he was found guilty of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s. on his truth social platform, trump wrote that sidney powell was never his attorney. it comes after powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor charges last week in the georgia election interference case. now in 2020, trump publicly announced that he had added powell to his legal team. she has agreed to testify against her co-defendants in the case.

body cameras showed officers using a catch pole to grab the cub once it was cornered by the shopping carts. troopers took the bear away. they say the small bear appeared abandoned. well, there was a near collision between two airliners at portland international airport, and new details in a michigan murder investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports there's no evidence of anti-semitism in the stabbing death of a detroit synagogue president, according to police. the body of 40-year-old samantha woll was found outside her home saturday. and 1,000 mourners remembered her at her funeral including her close friend, michigan attorney general dana nessel. police are searching for a suspect and a motive. "the tennesseean" says police are searching for the estranged son of nashville's police chief in connection with the shooting of two officers. the shooting took place saturday as police were investigating a stolen vehicle in laverne, about 20 miles southeast of nashville.

authorities say they struggled with the suspect, john drake jr., outside a store when they were shot. one officer was released from the hospital. the other is in stable condition. drake is wanted on two counts of attempted murder. and "the oregonian" says the faa is investigating an incident involving two planes at portland international airport. last month during stormy conditions, an alaska airlines flight aborted an attempted landing shortly after a sky west plane lifted off from a parallel runway. the "oregonian" says despite multiple attempts by air traffic controllers to correct the path of the alaska plane it steered toward the other plane before veering away. the planes came within an estimated 250 feet of one another. still to come, taylor swift cheers on the chiefs. the pop star debuts a special handshake with brittany moments -- mahomes at yesterday's game. still having bladder leaks? find a bladder specialist

some audience members apparently found dave chappelle's boston show last week less than funny. according to the "wall street journal," witnesses say the comedian, who is muslim, shared his views on the israel-hamas war. they say he began by condemning hamas' october 7th attack on israel. then chappelle criticized what he said were war crimes in gaza causing some audience members to leave. "law and order" creator dick wolf is threatening to stop giving money to his alma mater, the university of pennsylvania, over a recent event. wolf is calling on two of the school's leaders to step down after they organized a palestinian literature festival at the school last month. the event included speakers accused of anti-semitism. representatives for the university did not immediately respond to requests for comment. and michigan state says it has suspended an employee involved in allowing adolf hitler's image to be shown on
