from cbs news bay area this is the afternoon edition. and off-duty pilate faces charges of attempted murder. what authorities say he tried to do midflight that endangere dozens of lives. in the middle east two more hostages are free but a threat of a ground invasion looms even closer. the attempt to hide mor time. and east bay pilot is accused of trying to shut down the engines of a jetliner midflight. we are following the latest on what could have been a real tragedy. >> the pilot lives in pleasant

hill and was off duty at the time riding in the extra seat in the cockpit. this is the suspect, joseph emerson. he is in jail in oregon facing 83 counts of attempted murder. the alaskan airlines light 2359 took off just before 5:30 yesterday evening from plainfield and the confrontation happened not long into the flight heard the suspect was sitting in a jumpseat when he tried to kill the engines. the captain my first officer and rest of the crew were able to subdue him . instead of continuing on to sfo it was diverted to portland an landed about an hour after takeoff. here is part of the audio recording of the pilots conversation with air traffic control. >> we got the guy that tried t shut the engines down out of th car. cockpit. it doesn't seem like he is causing an issue in the back right now. other than

that, we want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground >> remarkably calm. once the plane landed safely portland police arrested that man and it turns out he is from contra costa county read he is in alaska airlines pilot and was off duty. he is facing a total of 160 charges, 83 felony counts of attempted murder, reckless endangerment and one count of reckless airplane endangerment. we heard from a director about what is next. >> they will unpack this person's life. understanding what his ideology was. is ther any leanings towards terrorist ideology. is there just a menta instability. they will go through his social media, all of his computers, phones and of course he is facing really

serious charges. >> alaska says all of the passengers were able to get to sfo on later flights and i'm sure they were relieved at what was averted there. >> as was mentioned, emerson lives in pleasant hill and it was all quite outside of his home today. neighbors say he always seemed like a nice guy. >> nothing abnormal about him. very caring , loves his kids. very nice to our grandson when he is over there. >> emerson is also a flight instructor, member of a flying club in the accounting field i concord. jose martinez speaks with an aviation expert about how this could have happened an what safeguards are in place. in san jose a building in a residential neighborhood went u in flames on bonavista avenue near san carlos. you can see th building entirely charred. it i surrounded by homes that appear to have escaped the flames. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked the

fire. a robbery turned deadly inside and east bay gun store. livermore police say mn armed with a hammer entered east bay firearms on first street yesterday, tried to steal a gun they say the storeowner fired two rounds, hitting the man who later died. this appears to be case of self-defense and the storeowner is not a suspect at this time. five customers were inside the store and not injured. a 16-year-old boy has died and three other teens taken to the hospital after a shooting a a weekend house party in oakley surveillance video captured som of the chaotic moments with people screaming and someone running to help the victims. on neighbor told kpix that he foun teenage boys on the ground wit gunshot wounds. >> i heard someone say he was shot, i instantly ran out and grabbed my tourniquets. i saw the other kid pass away. i was right there as he took his last breaths. it was surreal.

>> the teen who died attended liberty high school and the principal says they have set up their library as a place for students and staff that need support and come and talk with counselors. now to the fast-changing conditions in the middle east for thomas is released to more hostages. this is video just in . they are identified as two israeli women. this is in addition to the two american women released on friday. sources have told cbs news that the biden administration has tried to slow israel's plan refill ground invasion. but the say their main focus is on humanitarian aid and the ongoing hostage situation. >> it is an hour by hour effort here at the white house and state department to find out where these folks are and try t make the effort to get them out >> in the last 24 hours israel

says they have had at least 32 targets in gaza including a tunnel used by hamas writers. you can see notable buildings collapsing after the blast. thi video was released i the israeli military. and the united nations says 14 more trucks carrying aid their way into gaza over the weekend. about 1.4 million people are displaced in gaza and nearly 600,000 are staying in you and shelters and the agency warns that hospitals in that region are on the verge of collapse. the conflict started with the hamas attack on october 7. new video released by israel defens forces shows a hamas militant firing at cars the day of the massacre. some family members of the two american hostages last week spoke with our senior foreign correspondent about that situation . >> when you first saw those images, the videos and photographs of them being released, what was that feeling

we are getting new information on san francisco's drug crisis . sfpd say they've arrested 1400 people in the pas five months in the tenderloin neighborhood. most of the arrests were for drug use followed by drug dealing. polic seized 53 kilograms of fentanyl more than 26 million potential deadly doses. they say 54 peopl died from overdoses in august. that is the lowest number in th city since you are .. but the city is still on pace to surpas the worst year for overdose deaths back in 2020. those numbers , from the drug overdose dashboard and also tracks the number of people entering treatment. wilson walker spoke with when user on the street about what he thinks can actually help.

their arm multiple pathways of treatment . >> we want to make sure people not only understand that but understand that there is hope and recovery is possible. >> with the numbers now on pace for the deadliest year on recor health officials say they will be rolling out more information not just in the casualties but a better look at what is being done to prevent them. for example how many people are showing up at 1380 howard stree if someone is looking for some kind of treatment. this is one place where that unique journe can begin. >> we counted 417 people that have entered essential substanc use treatment from january through june of this year, 2023 >> personally i mean problem is the access, availability and how cheap it is. >> having tried a couple of different programs jay says thi is the one thing standing in th way. >> this stuff right here is

two years ahead of our goals in terms of the first goal of getting 1.5 million electric vehicles sold in the state of california . we are already ahead of goal in the number of charges we've built out. >> the governor says more than 93,000 public and private rideshare charges have been built. ferry commuters in the east bay will have to use the alamed ferry lagoon terminal where th main street terminal is closed for a repair project . it will be repaired and replaced to b better equipped for earthquakes >> that ferry terminal has been in use for a really long time. i've been taking the ferry for over 12 years on and off. and that ferry terminal needed a lot of work. >> that ferry terminal is expected to reopen early january. commuters headed to

downtown san francisco will hav to use that alameda seaplane lagoon terminal as an alternative. a sterling vineyards is now back open after flames tore through their property during the 2020 classifier. they credit cal fire crews for savin much of the property and now partner with them to host fire training for local fire departments. while sterling vineyards has ratified itself against any threat of future wildfire. cal fire says those living in fire prone areas hav no choice but to be ready. >> they have done a great job. they are truly one of the examples of fire resiliency with their field mitigation programs they have. >> sterling will welcome customers back this sunday. first alert weather right now. darren peck takes a look ahead at our virtual view . a >> quite a change from yesterday. we got rid of the

clouds for the most part. more sunshine than anything else and boy did we start warming up . i we look at the daytime highs, a lot of the numbers are mid-70s and most are 5 to 7 degrees above where we work yesterday, except for the north bay. that is where we really notice the big change. these were the places that did not get out of the mid 60s yesterday. going 8 today. watch what happens, jus to do the comparison. i think this really drives the point home how the start of the week does feel quite different from the weekend. this is the warmest day in the seven-day forecast. by the time we get t wednesday, thursday and friday it will be noticeably cooler. tomorrow will be very similar t this. you can see why wednesda will be different . you can see the next system coming our way. that will bring in cooler air from the gulf of alaska and would try to bring us some rain you see that line of showers,

it falls apart . and we do not get rain out of it. moves inland, and we are done. another one tries to get in on friday but that also does not have what it takes. both of these are going to be able to keep the cooler temperatures going . the only thing i want t point out about that system tha comes in on friday and saturday is the potential for it to produce a little bit of snow in the sierra. we will keep an eye on that and the only reason we pointed out is for any minor traffic impacts there could be. but for the most part it doesn't look to be a significan winter storm by any means. but it's those early systems that can catch people off guard. our two warmest days are right here, monday and tuesday. he will cool down by next weekend back into the mid-60s by the time we get here. there is a 10 chance of rain that shows up b the time we get to friday and saturday. it does not look
