dire conditions on the ground. israel vowing to destroy hamas as u.s. and other officials fear the fighting could grow into a wider conflict. i'm honored to have the support of my colleagues -- >> take four. house republicans pick mike johnson of louisiana as their new leader hours after their third pick dropped out. will johnson meet the same fate that doomed his predecessors? and trump troubles. three cases, three jurisdictions, and three former allies turning against the former president. good morning, and good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. israel has stepped up its unrelenting bombardment on gaza launching 400 air strikes in a 24-hour respond. -- 24-hour span. the hamas-run gaza health ministry says it suffered its single deadliest day of the war with 700 killed. but u.s. officials cannot verify that number. fuel supplies are dwindling forcing health care facilities

to shut down. the world health organization says one of every three hospitals stopped functioning. and the u.s. continues to bolster its forces in the region. a new jersey air national guard's fighter squadron arrived in the middle east in case american troops are targeted. ian lee joins us from tel aviv. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. we're keeping an eye on that aid trying to get into gaza. the u.n. says eight of the scheduled 20 trucks yesterday made it in, but that's a far cry of what the u.n. says is needed, especially as you pointed out since there's no fuel allowed to enter. israel says that's because hamas uses it for their trucks, but as you pointed out, that has forced six hospitals to close because they can't power their generators. this morning israeli defense officials said they conducted retaliatory strikes in the west bank and against syrian military assets. >> we do not want this war to widen. >> reporter: at a united nations security council meeting yesterday, secretary of state antony blinken repeated warnings

to outside actors, particularly iran-backed militant groups, not to get involved. >> if iran or its proxies attack u.s. personnel anywhere, make no mistake, we will defend our people. >> reporter: israel increased its air strikes on gaza amid growing calls for a cease-fire. >> it is vital to be clear on principles starting with the fundamental principle of respecting and protecting civilians. >> reporter: but the white house says a cease-fire right now would only benefit hamas. >> this is war. it is ugly, and it's going to be messy. and innocent civilians are going to be hurt. >> reporter: yesterday more trucks filled with food, water, and medicine flowed into gaza from egypt, but aid workers say fuel is what's most vital to keep water systems and hospitals operational. israeli officials say hamas has fuel, and they should be supplying it to gaza.

meanwhile, one of the hostages released by hamas, 85-year-old yocheved lifshitz, is speaking out saying she went through hell but was treated kindly and provided for. her husband is one of the more than 200 hostages still being held. israel's ground invasion seems to be on hold for now while these negotiations continue to free more of the hostages. but the air strikes continue, and so do the rockets as this bloody war rages on. anne-marie? >> all right, ian lee in tel aviv. thank you. our other top story -- the chaos in the capitol. divided house republicans are now on their fourth speaker nominee. two of them happening yesterday alone. the newest pick, louisiana's mike johnson, coming just hours after number three bowed out. it is the latest twist in a remarkable three-week deadlock that has left congress leaderless and paralyzed. will johnson have the support to win the gavel before today's expected floor vote? skyler henry has the latest from capitol hill.

>> reporter: house republicans say louisiana's mike johnson is the man they want to become the next speaker. johnson won on the final ballot late tuesday night receiving 128 votes, defeating florida's byron donalds. >> we're going to restore your trust. you're going to see a new form of government, and we are going to move this quickly. this group here is ready to govern, and we're going to govern well. we're going to do what's right by the people. i believe the people are going to reward that next year. >> reporter: johnson is the fourth republican speaker nominee in three weeks. the second nominee of the day. minnesota congressman tom emmer won the most votes of republicans to become the speaker nominee by tuesday morning. by tuesday afternoon, his candidacy was dead. >> there were 28 or so that stated they're going to choose someone other than tom emmer. >> reporter: emmer's candidacy was scuttled after president trump posted on social media

slamming him as a reno or republican in name onli. >> we need to reflect the needs of the waters. and republican voters support trump. >> reporter: emmer called trump over the weekend but it wasn't enough. the vote to certify the 2020 presidential elections results put him at odds with the maga republicans. trump's opposition to emmer was enough to keep him from becoming speaker. others opposed emmer because he voted for federal recognition of same-sex marriage. >> i can't go along with putting one of the most moderate members of the entire republican conference in the speaker's chair. that betrays the conservative values that i came here to fight for. >> reporter: ousted former speaker kevin mccarthy, who was not a nominee, received 43 votes. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. former president donald trump's legal troubles are growing. former white house chief of staff mark meadows is said to be cooperating with federal prosecutors investigating

trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election in exchange for immunity. trump is also expected back in court today in new york city to face off against his ex-attorney michael cohen in a case that could bring down the trump organization in that state. plus, a third trump attorney has pleaded guilty in georgia's election interference case. here's robert costa. i look back on this whole experience with deep remorse. >> reporter: in a tearful turnaround, former trump campaign lawyer jenna ellis admitted to making false statements that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent. >> if i knew then what i know now i would have declined to represent donald trump in these posts-election challenges. >> reporter: ellis became the third attorney associated with trump to accept a plea deal and could testify against him in the future. she blamed rudy giuliani and others for pulling her into a conspiracy. >> what i did not do but should have done, your honor, was to make sure the facts the other lawyers alleged to be true were, in fact, true.

>> reporter: meanwhile trump was part of a dramatic standoff in a new york courtroom as michael cohen, his former fixer, sat across from him and accused trump of fraud. >> how did it feel to see donald trump again? >> at the reunion. >> reporter: cohen said trump directed him to balloon his net worth and inflate the value of his properties, including trump park avenue and trump world tower. testifying that he was tasked by mr. trump to increase the total assets based upon a number that he arbitrarily selected. trump shook his head in response without looking at cohen. cohen also implicated trump's children including ivanka for being involved in creating false financial statements. the former president's legal team has repeatedly attacked cohen's credibility. he served 13 months in jail for crimes including lying to congress. >> a liar, as you know. a felon. >> reporter: for trump and cohen, this was their first in-person confrontation in five years. and as trump watched his former fixer testify, he sometimes folded his arms across his chests and shook his head in disgust.

robert costa, cbs news, new york. stunning revelations in court about the off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut down the engines on an alaska airlines plane mid flight. police say he told them he took psychedelic mushrooms days before. here's kris van cleave. >> reporter: our first look at 44-year-old alaska airlines captain joseph emerson in court facing 83 counts of attempted murder after he allegedly attempted to turn off the engines of alaska flight 2059 while he was off duty and riding in the cockpit jump seat sunday night. >> we've got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. >> reporter: according to newly released court documents, emerson told police he was having a nervous breakdown, hadn't slept in 40 hours, was battling depression, and had consumed, quote, magic mushrooms two days earlier. about a half hour into the flight the pilots told investigators emerson threw off

his headset and pulled red parts and they wrestled him away from the controls and asked him to leave the cockpit. police say emerson told them he it because "i thought i was dreaming, and i just want to wake up." >> fear went -- >> reporter: passenger paul stephen was one of 84 on board. >> i've flown a lot in my life and been scared once before. yesterday was the second time. >> reporter: in the back of the plane, court documents say emerson asked to be handcuffed but tried to open an emergency exit door. police arrested him when the plane landed in portland. airline captain laura einsetler -- >> the crew that was operating this flight did an excellent job being able to actually challenge him, get him away from the controls, and subdue him and be able to get him into the back of the aircraft. >> that was kris van cleave reporting. emerson pleaded not guilty to all charges. alaska says that he showed no signs of visible impairment before boarding that sunday night flight and had passed all

and another texas county is outlawing abortion-related travel. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the texas tribune" says lubbock county is the latest texas county to approve an abortion travel ban. the county commission approved an ordinance banning anyone from helping pregnant women travel on county roads to obtain an abortion in another state. texas bans abortion at all stages of pregnancy. the travel ban can only be enforced by private citizens filing civil lawsuits against people who assist texas women in getting an abortion. it does not punish women seeking an abortion. "the atlanta journal constitution" says the atlanta -- the georgia supreme court is allowing the state to continue to ban abortions at about six weeks of pregnancy. the court rejected a lower court ruling that said the ban was unconstitutional because it was enacted in 2019 when roe v. wade allowed abortions past six weeks. the u.s. supreme court overturned roe v. wade last year.

made landfall just five miles south of acapulco, mexico. it hit the beach resort area as a dangerous category five packing winds of 165 miles per hour. the hurricane could bring up to 20 inches of rain. the fight for the taco tuesday trademark is over, and the autoworkers union is expanding its strike. now in its sixth week. here's jarred hill with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: some good news for u.s. stocks after a rocky few days. wall street rose tuesday on the heels of better-than-expected corporate earnings reports. the dow was up 204 points. the nasdaq, 121, and the s&p 500 rose 30 points. the autoworkers strike continues to expand. tuesday about 5,000 workers walked out of a general motors factory in texas. recently the united autoworkers union has begun targeting plants that produce some of the big three's most profitable vehicles. an effort to get ford, stellantis, and gm to give in to more demands. but the companies have said that

they are at or near how much they're willing to budge. california's pumping the brakes on a driverless taxi service calling it an unreasonable risk to public safety. state regulators revoked the license for cruise robotaxi which is owned by gm. the decision comes after a series of incidents including when one of the cars ran over a pedestrian who'd been initially hit by a car with a driver. the company can still operate in autonomous mode but with a human behind the wheel. finally, taco tuesday is for everybody. taco bell has won a months' long legal battle to use the phrase in advertising. two smaller companies already had it trademarked, but the lone holdout in new jersey just let go of its registration. this frees up any restaurant to promote taco tuesday specials. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this wednesday morning. i'm jarred hill, cbs news, new york. up next, something to believe in. poison front man bret michaels reaches out to a hero dog named
