new details about the gunman. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the israel-hamas war as israeli forces push forward into gaza. a disturbing and violent display of anti-semitism in russia. an angry crowd in the country's mostly muslim dagestan region stormed an airport sunday as a flight from israel was landing. more than 20 people were hurt in clashes. the passengers on the plane were safe, though. israel, meantime, says it carried out strikes against military infrastructure in syria after rockets from there fell in open israeli territory. in gaza, israeli fighter jets hit more than had 50 hamas targets in the last day. benjamin netanyahu announced the war has entered its second stage. ian lee is in tel aviv with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it seems lake that

long-anticipated ground invasion is under way. we were down on the gaza border this weekend. we could see air strikes and artillery. over the past few days, the israeli military says it struck more than 600 targets including weapons depots, anti-tank missile launching positions, as well as hideouts and staging grounds used by hamas. israel expanded ground operations in gaza over the weekend and launched hundreds of air strikes against hundreds of hamas targets even as international calls for a cease-fire grow. >> the number of civilians who have been killed and injured is totally unacceptable. >> reporter: white house officials have warned that a cease-fire would benefit hamas, though the administration is pushing israel to balance its fight against the militant group with the safety of civilians. >> we pressed them to make sure to distinguish between hamas and the palestinian people who hamas does not represent, and the palestinian people deserve to live lives of safety. >> reporter: egypt says more than 20 trucks carrying

humanitarian aid entered gaza, but the crisis there continues to worsen. united nations officials say thousands broke into warehouses holding some of those badly needed supplies, taking flour and personal hygiene products. israel has also launched retaliatory strikes against hezbollah in lebanon and military assets in syria. the vice president warned against an expanded u.s. military role on "60 minutes" sunday. >> we have absolutely no intention nor do we have any plans to send combat troops into israel or gaza. >> reporter: cbs news has learned two u.s. navy ships carrying a marine task force are expected to arrive in the eastern mediterranean today. >> so you know, we briefly mentioned the scene at the dagestan airport. the reaction from world leaders has been swift. what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah. we heard from the israeli prime minister's office saying that it

was -- upon russia's duty to protect not only israelis but jewish people inside that country. we heard from the united states condemning this protest as anti-semitic. really it was a mob of people that went through this airport and other parts of dagestan. we're hearing at least ten people were injured, including two who are in critical condition. also we heard from the head of the dagestan region saying that these people will not be forgiven for this attack, telling people that they should just go home and not a part of this sort of violence. anne-marie? >> really disturbing. thank you very much. now to the shocking death of actor matthew perry. the medical examiner says this morning the official cause of his death remains unknown pending a toxicology report. the "friends" star being mourned by family, friends, and generations of fans paying their respects outside the "friends" apartment in new york city and his l.a. home.

nischelle turner from "entertainment tonight" has more on his life and career. >> rachel and i hired a male nanny. >> you got a man who's a nanny? you got a manny? >> reporter: matthew perry played the wisecracking chandler bing for the entire ten-year run that shot him to fame at 24 years old. >> could i be more sorry? >> reporter: 30 years later has -- his sudden death was a shock. he was found unresponsive in a jacuzzi at his los angeles home. >> engine 23, rescue 23 -- >> reporter: the investigation is ongoing, but authorities do not suspect foul play. in his final instagram post a week ago, perry shared a photo of himself in his jacuzzi. the hollywood funny man battled addiction, writing about his struggle with substance abuse in last year's memoir "friends, lovers, and the big terrible thing."

>> i had people around me telling me to stop. i had people around me saying you're going to kill yourself if you keep going like this. and i just didn't go -- i didn't know how. >> reporter: he said he was living a health lifestyle after overcoming his addiction to alcohol and drugs in 2021. he had gone to rehab 15 times and going to 6,000 aa meetings. >> i wanted to drink all the time because it's the only time i feel good and normal. but then it turns on you, the drink turns on you and says, well, now i'm going to kill you. >> reporter: the actor starred and executive produced in cbs' revival of "the odd couple" and received his fifth emmy in 2021 for "friends: the reunion." thanks to streaming, "friends" gained a new generation of fans during the pandemic. >> we win! >> that was initinichelle turne reporting. reaction, of course, is

pouring in to perry's death. his "friends" cast mates are said to be reeling and are preparing to release a joint statement. other stars took to social media, maggie wheeler who played janice writes, "what a loss. i feel so blessed by every creative moment he we shared." actor morgan fairchild wrote that she was heartbroken by the untimely death. gwyneth paltrow remembers meeting him 30 years ago in plays. he was so funny and sweet and so much fun to be with. we drove out to swim in creeks, had beers in the local college bar, kissed in a field of long grass. it was a magical summer. and canadian prime minister justin trudeau was perry's elementary school classmate and writes, "i'll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play and i know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them." well, a federal judge has reinstated a gag order on donald trump. a judge is overseeing his

2020 election interference case in washington, d.c. the order bars trump from making public comments targeting prosecutors, court staff, and potential witnesses. and a trial that could block trump from appearing on colorado's presidential ballot in 2024 will get under way today. a lawsuit argues trump is disqualified from serving as president again because of his alleged role in the january 6th insurrection. trump is not expected to attend. and now to maine and new details about the gunman who carried out the nation's worst mass shooting so far this year. a sheriff now acknowledges that he sent an alert to other law enforcement about robert card saying that he made threats about an army reserve center. as the investigation continues, hundreds in the community came together to mourn the 18 lives lost. shanelle kaul joins us from new york with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. after days of being locked inside their homes while the killer was on the loose, this

weekend the community of lewiston, maine, was finally able to mourn together. ♪ hundreds packed into this church sunday night with many more spilling onto the streets to remember those killed in maine's deadliest mass shooting. the bishop sharing a letter from pope francis -- >> wants each of you to know that he is with you in this moment of grief and sadness. >> reporter: before the names of the 18 victims were read aloud. >> steven bozella. >> breaks my heart. >> if you could say one last thing to your uncle, what would you say? >> i miss him. i miss you, i love you. >> reporter: in a tribute to the four members of maine's deaf community killed in the massacre, the crowd raised their hands -- >> a very special sign -- >> reporter: -- to say "i love you" in american sign language. ♪ the vigil followed a string of weekend events in the community. ♪

including this gathering saturday night -- >> i don't think it will ever heal. i think -- i think there will be a scar, but the wound will always remain. >> reporter: and a halloween event for children on sunday. >> most of these kids don't understand what happened a few days ago. >> reporter: the gunman, 40-year-old robert card, was found dead following a two-day manhunt. now reports reveal law enforcement was alerted to be on the lookout for card after he made threats about an army reserve center. it remains unclear how that alert was handled. investigators are still searching for a motive for the massacre but are now zeroing in on card's mental health history. the state's public safety commissioner saying the violence may have been driven by card's paranoia. >> shanelle kaul in new york. thank you. coming up, more gunfire and mass shootings. violence erupted on halloween weekend. dozens were killed or wounded in shootings around the country. and a misstep for gavin

"npr" reports there were multiple mass shootings in the u.s. over the weekend just ahead of halloween. newly released data showed at least 11 people were killed, and dozens more were hurt. in florida two people died, a 14-year-old and 20-year-old, after shots rang out early yesterday in downtown tampa.

police say a suspect was arrested and charge. in chicago at least 15 people were wounded by gunfire during halloween celebrations yesterday. police say the gunman is in custody. the "los angeles times" says california governor gavin newsom visited china where he fouled out during a photo op with some kids. newsom stopped by a school basketball court in beijing friday. while demonstrating his skills, he stumbled and knocked down a student. newsom and the boy ended up on the ground, though neither appeared to be hurt. and the "wisconsin state journal" reports a deadly goodwill donations. -- donation. police in janesville, south of madison, say a live bomb was discovered among the donations. the dane county bomb squad recovered the explosive and will destro it. police are still trying to determine where the device came from, though. still to come, striking another deal. the uaw reaches an agreement with the second automaker over the weekend. details ahead in cbs "money watch." cbs "money

batch of corporate earnings and some mixed readings on the u.s. economy. the dow lost 366. nasdaq gained 47. s&p losing 19 points. this strike could be nearing an end. the uaw has reached a tentative deal with stellantis on a new contract following one with ford last week. the two tentative deals leave general motors as the only automaker in the big three still at odds with the union. the six-week strike has idled thousands of employees at the automakers. ford's union workers will vote on that deal over the next couple of weeks. more walgreens walkouts. some pharmacy staff will again walk off the jobs today, tomorrow, and wednesday. they claim unsafe working conditions and a strain to vaccinate people. it follows walkouts three weeks ago. there are 9,000 walgreens stores across the country, but these stoppages are said to affect hundreds of stores. and with halloween tomorrow, you may have let out a boo at the checkout line. for the second year in a row, shoppers are seeing double-digit

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ game three of the world series will be played tonight in arizona. the series is tied at one game apiece. the texas rangers took game one in extra innings while the arizona diamondbacks scored a blowout win in game two. and tragedy during a hockey game in england. 29-year-old adam johnson of the nottingham panthers died after his neck was cut by a skate blade in what's being called a freak accident on the ice saturday. johnson was a minnesota native who had played for the pittsburgh penguins before going overseas. and tennis great pete sampras is opening up about his family's private struggle with cancer. the 14-time grand slam champion revealed his wife, bridgette wilson sampras, has been battling ovarian cancer since last december.
