mass shooter, his deteriorating mental health, and what his own family told authorities months before the massacre. captioning funded by cbs family told authorities m s be ever the massacre. well, well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israeli ground troops are pushing deeper into gaza as prime minister netanyahu rejects calls for a cease-fire. israel says it freed a female soldier who had been held hostage since october 7th. and unicef is warning that clean water is rapidly running out in gaza and that could cause more disease among the population. cbs's ian lee is in tel aviv for us this morning. ian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the united nations says more than 400 children are dying or being injured every day in gaza, but israel is continuing to ignore calls for a cease-fire as they battle hamas and search for hostages. this morning there's happiness

one israeli family after israeli soldier ori megidish was rescued from gaza. she was taken hostage during the deadly multiple assault on most communities, but for the family of 23-year-old shani louk there's heartbreak. the israelis determined the young german israeli's dealt after she was among those taken from the music festival. it shows three hostages, one criticizing israeli leaders. officials say it was likely filmed under duress. family and friends of the three women shown are breathing a slight sigh of relief. >> it's a strange feeling, okay. so we're happy that she's alive. >> reporter: it all comes as israeli forces have expanded their campaign deeper into gaza, on the ground, and in the air. the fighting has intensified since the weekend. we've heard artillery, bombs, and machine gunfire targeting hamas in gaza.

>> the current siege on gaza is collective punishment. >> reporter: united nation officials warn of the worsening humanitarian conditions in gaza and called for a cease-fire yesterday. >> israel did not start this war. israel did not want this war, but israel will win this war. >> reporter: but israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu has dismissed those calls, saying a cease-fire will not happen. the director of the u.n. office in charge of coordinating humanitarian affairs told the u.n. security council yesterday that they simply don't have enough essential supplies to provide for the survival of the people of gaza. on monday, only 26 trucks of aid made it into the territory. meanwhile the u.s. state didn't says its last charter flight to get americans out of israel will leave today and doesn't have any more plan due to low demand. anne-marie? >> ian lee in tel aviv. thank you, ian.

back here in the u.s. the fbi's investigating threats of violence made against jewish students at cornell university. it's the latest incidence of growing anti-semitism on college campuses since the beginning of the war. cw bs's nancy cordes reports. >> reporter: a war being waged a half a world away is inflaming campuses here at home. >> if hamas is worse than i.s.i.s., then israel is worse than nazi germany. >> reporter: at couper union university in new york city, a group of jewish students huddled inside a locked library during a pro-palestinian protest a few days ago. >> for roughly ten minutes, approximately ten minutes, they were banging on the doors of the library. >> reporter: at cornell university students were advised to avoid the kosher dining hall out of an abundance of caution due to violent threats. governor kathy hochul reports. >> no one should be afraid to walk from their dorm to a dining hall or a classroom. >> reporter: but jewish students at columbia university say they are afraid in a way they weren't before.

>> we know now that there are students in our class that simply hate us because we're jewish. >> reporter: julia jassey runs a nonprofit called jewish on campus. >> in your view, what are some of the mistakes some universities are making? >> i think it's a really important time to understand ther's a difference between the political discourse and the harassment of jewish students on college campuses. >> reporter: it's not just limited to college campuses. a las vegas man was just charged with one count of threatening a federal official after he left a series of anti-semitic voice mails vowing to assault, kidnap, or murder a u.s. senator. sources tell the cbs news the target was democrat jacky rosen. and in illinois, a man accused of murdering a 6-year-old palestinian boy, an alleged hate crime, made his first appearance in court. the biden administration announced that it is detailing dozens of cybersecurity experts to help schools examine isz

llamaphobic and threats and the departments of justice and homeland security are getting involved as well, working with college police departments to track hateful speech. nancy cordes, cbs news, the white house. well, house republicans are proposing a more than $14 billion aid package for israel, but they want to pay for it by cutting the same amount in funding to the irs. the money was part of an $80 billion approved by the irs last year in the inflation reduction act. new house speaker mike johnson acknowledged the democrats oppose cutting funding to the irs. the white house called the bill a nonstarter. in the senate today the defense secretary and secretary of state will make the case to send aid to israel and ukraine, testifying at a hearing on the nation's $105 billion aid request. and now into the investigation into the mass shooting in maine. the gunman's family warned authorities months before the

massacre about his mental health, and cbs news has learned the army told his commanders that he should not have a weapon. so where was the breakdown in communication? cbs's shanelle kaul is joining us now from new york. chanel, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. authorities say the gunman's family warned local police five months before the shooting as they grew increasingly concerned about robert card's mental health, especially because of his access to firearms. >> it's a major tragedy beyond words. >> reporter: new documents released monday night report maine authorities were aware robert card was mentally unstable and had threatened violence even before carrying out maine's deadliest mass shooting. the army determined 40-year-old card should not have access to military weapons and asked local police to conduct a welfare check. then last month a statewide alert for the gunman was issued. it's unclear if more was done to find card before last week's shooting. >> you know, we're going to learn from some mistakes.

i'm sure we've made a couple along the way. >> reporter: on august 5th card tried to pick up up a firearms suppresser but was denied because he admitted he had mental health issues on a questionnaire. >> we're sickened and saddened the fact that what he did, but we just can't imagine how much more carnage would have been if he would have had a silencer on the front of that. >> reporter: in a heated news conference monday maine's governor janet mills remained tight-lipped on why until days after the shooting. >> why it happened in the first place and what measures may have been in place that weren't used or were used. >> reporter: but in the midst of their mourning. >> just still feeling like i'm waiting to wake up from a bad dream. >> reporter: survivors and families in this community want answers. maine's governor janet mills also said yesterday lawmakers

glenwood caverns adventure park. he apparently broke into the park while it was closed. the man's body wu found by a maintenance crew before it opened to the public. the bismarck tribune says a north dakota state senator pleaded not guilty to child sex crimes. a federal indictment unsealed yesterday accuses 79-year-old ray holmberg of traveling to prague repeatedly from 2011 to 2016 to pay for sex with children under 20 years old. he also received child abuse images. he resigned from the senate last year after local media reports he exchanged dozens of text messages with someone jailed for charges of alleged sex abuse images. and the kansas city star blocked a law yesterday. the judge entered an injunction
