sounding an alarm. the head of the fbi warning hamas could inspire terror attacks here at home. and arrested. a cornell university student facing federal charges accused of making violent online threats toward his jewish classmates. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israel keeping up its barrage attacks on gaza from the air and the ground. this morning the jewish state coming under sharp criticism for its strike on a refugee camp. the israeli military defending the attack saying it killed dozens of militants, including a key hamas commander. but there's also an unknown number of civilian casualties. israel also confirmed nine more soldiers were killed in its ground incursion bringing the total to 11. secretary of state antony blinken plans to travel back to israel friday as the u.s. sends 300 more troops to the region. cbs' ian lee is joining us from

tel aviv with the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. israel says it has hit 11,000 targets since the beginning of the war. that's more than 440 every day. yesterday one of those strikes hit gaza's largest refugee camp. palestinian border officials say more than 80 wounded gazans are expected to cross into egypt for medical treatment today. overnight gunfire rang out and flares streaked across the sky over gaza. israeli defense officials claim a large number of hamas militants including a top commander were killed in wide-scale strikes on the densely crowded refugee camp. hamas says dozens of civilians were killed. and the israeli military has reportedly launched more raids into the west bank. a spokesman for hamas claims the group will begin to release foreign hostages in the coming days, though israeli officials

say there's no hostage deal in sight. >> israel did not protect its citizens along the border with gaza, and it has a moral responsibility to bring them back. >> reporter: this man negotiated with hamas to free an israeli soldier in 2011. he's still in touch with some of the militants. when you look at hamas now versus the hamas you negotiated with, do you see the same organization? >> no. what they did on october 7th on black saturday, in crossing the line, they became a terrorist organization. >> reporter: so far hamas has given up four hostages including two americans and two israeli civilians. baskin agrees that the current fighting could pressure hamas to release more. >> i think that the limited military incursion that we're seeing now is part of the negotiation. >> reporter: what incentive does hamas have to release hostages? >> hamas has very little incentives to release hostages now. they are not yet absorbing the reality that israel is presenting to them that they will not exist.

>> reporter: cbs news has learned the u.s. is sending 300 more troops to the middle east. they won't go into israel but will help with things like communications, disposal of explosives, and other support. now this comes as secretary of state antony blinken will travel to israel on friday for meetings with government officials. anne-marie? >> ian lee in tel aviv, thank you so much. now to the growing terror threats on the homefront. fbi director christopher wray sounding an alarm that the risk of a terrorist attack in the u.s. has risen, quote, to a whole other level not seen since the emergence of i.s.i.s. this comes as a cornell university student is charged in connection to violent anti-semitic threats on campus. the 21-year-old junior will face a judge today. let's get to shanelle kaul here in new york following both of these stories for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. federal authorities are deeply concerned the conflict in the middle east is now inspiring

both anti-semitic and islamophobic attacks here rat home, the war could get terrorist groups around the world to target the u.s. >> this cruelty by new yorkers against new yorkers must stop. >> reporter: days after social media posts surfaced threatening jewish students at cornell university, federal authorities have made an arrest. new york governor kathy hochul saying 21-year-old patrick dai was questioned by state police and the fbi's joint terrorism task force on tuesday. >> i reaffirm that there is zero tolerance for hate in our state. >> reporter: the arrest comes as top government officials say hate crimes are rising across the country in the wake of the israel-hamas war. during a hearing to evaluate homeland threats, fbi director christopher wray sent a sober warning to americans. >> the ongoing war in the middle east has raised the threat of an attack against americans in the united states to a whole other level.

>> reporter: levels unseen since the emergence of i.s.i.s., wray says. >> the cost and the threats to the united states and to the world keep rising. it's like feeding the alligator hoping that he's going to eat you last. >> reporter: some protests at college campuses have escalated into intimidation, while a young muslim boy was killed in illinois in an apparent hate crime. >> our most immediate concern is that violent extremists, individuals or small groups, will draw inspiration from the events in the middle east to carry out attacks against americans going about their daily lives. >> reporter: back at cornell, campus police will maintain a heightened security presence aiming to protect those at risk. and that 21-year-old cornell student is expected to appear in federal court later today. in response to the heightened threats, the white house will also soon begin developing an anti-islamophobic strategy. this comes as the administration faces sharp criticism for many muslim americans for its support of israel's military assault on hamas in gaza.

the bet that we're too divided, we're too distracted at home to stay the course. that's what's at stake with president biden's national security supplemental funding request. >> reporter: there is a glowing group of house republicans -- growing group of house republicans opposed to more aid for ukraine. new house speaker mike johnson is planning a separate vote on israel aid which his coference does support, and he wants to pay for it with cuts to the irs. >> any kind of new spending should be offset by taking many -- money elsewhere in the budget. that's what speaker johnson is doing. this is the conservative position. >> that's setting up a fight between the house and the senate. >> the house is debating a measure that they know is dead on arrival in the united states senate. >> reporter: democratic and republican leaders in the senate want to keep all of the elements together. >> it would be a huge mistake to separate this package, and we've got to have strong border provisions. i will not support separation. >> reporter: the house could vote on the stand-alone israel aid package as soon as thursday. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol

hill. for the first time in more than three months, the u.s. has an ambassador to israel. the senate confirmed former obama-era treasury secretary jack lew to the post yesterday in a 53-43 vote. the position has been vacant since july. donald trump jr. is expected to take the witness stand today in the new york fraud trial against his father, the family, and their company. the former president, his two oldest sons, and the trump organization are accused of inflating the value of their properties to obtain financing and tax benefits. they deny any wrongdoing. eric trump is expected to testify. donald trump is set to take the stand next week followed by his daughter, ivanka, who is not a defendant in the case. meanwhile, former president trump is asking a michigan court to prevent the michigan secretary of state from leaving his name off the 2024 primary ballot. a lawsuit claims the u.s. constitution prohibits a person from running for federal office

wing, mostly -- of the mostly submerged plane when a helicopter crew hoisted him to safety. he suffered minor injuries, and the ntsb is investigating. another pilot was indicted in utah, and ex-dancers for the sacramento kings filed a lawsuit. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports a pilot was indicted for allegedly threatening to shoot the captain if their flight was diverted to help a sick passenger. a grand jury in utah indicted co-pilot jonathan dunn on charges of interfering with a flight crew, according to court records. officials say the former delta pilot used a dangerous weapon to assault and intimidate the captain during the flight last year. they say he was authorized to carry a gun in the cockpit. "the baltimore sun" says the second person to receive a heart transplant from a pig died at the university of maryland medical center. 58-year-old lawrence faucette died nearly six weeks after

getting the genetically modified heart. he was dying from heart failure and was ineligible for a traditional heart transplant. doctors said the pig heart started showing signs of rejection recently. another man who received a heart from a pig last year died two months later. the dow gained 123 points. nasdaq, 61, and the s&p 500 picked up 26 points. this comes as wall street focuses on today's expected interest rate announcement from the federal reserve. economists anticipate the central bank will hold rates steady this month, but chair jerome powell warned that inflation is still too high and more hikes are possible. a big win for tesla's autopilot. a california jury found the technology is not defective and not responsible for a fatal crash. tesla said the crash was due to human error and a driver still has to keep their hands on the wheel while using autopilot. there's a brew so strong you can't buy it in 15 states. sam adams utopia has 28% alcohol by volume. a typical hazy ipa has less than 7%. this does not come cheap. utopia's suggested price, $240

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ ♪ ghouls and goblins took over the streets of new york city's greenwich village last night. despite the cold, thousands showed up to help the annual village halloween parade celebrate its 50th anniversary in style. this year's theme was upside down and inside out, reflecting a return to normalcy after the pandemic years. a new jersey couple found out the hard way that trick-or-treaters will help themselves to just about anything. their doorbell camera showed kids taking treats they thought were left out on the porch for them.
