[ cheers ] good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the israel-hamas war, approaching its fourth week. as the fighting intensifies, president biden is calling for a humanitarian pause, a subtle departure from america's stance on the war. this comes as the egyptian border crossing opens allowing the first foreign passport holders and some critically injured palestinians to leave. it's expected to open again today. and israel says it hit the jabalia refugee camp for a second time in as many days targeting a terrorist command and control center. cbs' ian lee is in tel aviv with the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. there are roughly 400 americans

including their family members, so that's about 1,000 people still stuck in gaza. now the u.s. expects them to leave in the next few days, but this is a slow process as egypt wants to vet every person that enters their country. hundreds of foreign passport holders including some americans began crossing into egypt after the gates opened wednesday. >> we're working nonstop to get americans out of gaza as soon as and safely as possible. this is the result of intense and urgent american diplomacy with our partners in the region. >> reporter: the u.s. state department says it has been in contact with 400 americans who want to leave gaza. u.s. passport holder fathi abu al hassan said he became trapped there after visiting three months ago. >> no water. no food. no shelter. nothing, nothing. >> reporter: dozens of injured palestinian civilians were brought to egyptian hospitals for treatment as the fighting intensifies on both sides. from this position we can hear artillery, we can hear warplanes. and in the distance in gaza, you

can see smoke from air strikes. hamas says nearly 200 people are dead after another israeli air strike on the already hard-hit jabalia refugee camp yesterday. israel said the strikes took out a hamas command center and leader believed to be behind the deadly october 7th raid. israeli officials estimate as many as 3,000 hamas fighters may have invaded that day. >> we need a cease-fire. >> reporter: a top united nations official in gaza called attention to the deteriorating conditions there. the biden administration says it's focused on ramping up aid deliveries. secretary of state antony blinken is expected to arrive here in israel and then travel to jordan tomorrow. meanwhile, the u.s. house of representatives could take up its israel security bill as soon as today. anne-marie? >> ian lee in tel aviv. thank you so much. from the war in the middle east to the rise in

anti-semitic incidents at home. cornell university is canceling classes tomorrow to give students what it's called a community day following the recent threats and increased tensions on campus. a 21-year-old junior is being held behind bars on federal charges accused of posting threats to kill or injure jewish students. cbs' lilia luciano has the story from the campus in ithaca, new york. >> reporter: new york state police are standing guard outside the cornell center for jewish living after authorities say patrick dai, a junior engineering student at cornell, threatened to kill jewish students including those who eat at this kosher dining hall. >> very tense on campus. a lot of students have anxiety. >> reporter: the 21-year-old was in federal court after his arrest tuesday and charged with making a string of anti-semitic threats on line which included threatening to stab and slit the throats of jewish students. police say they tracked him using his ip address and that he confessed. >> as this arrest shows, we are focusing our efforts on confronting and disrupting illegal threats.

>> reporter: dai's father says his son is innocent and is suffering from depression, saying the family feared he was suicidal. vigorous debates and protests have erupted on college campuses since the israel-hamas war began with some leading to violence and intimidation. fbi director christopher wray -- >> the ongoing war in the middle east has raised the threat of an attack against americans in the united states to a whole other lvel. >> reporter: back on campus at cornell, students say despite an increase in police presence and an arrest, students are still concerned about safety and free speech. >> i think people are a little more afraid to i guess speak out, especially jewish students. you know, because there is a -- this is a threat against their identity. >> reporter: i also heard from a group of muslim students here on campus who were saying that, first of all, they condemn those hateful threats against jewish

students, and also that they see those messages as a mockery of their religion. they added that there have also been hateful islamophobic messages on those message boards, and that they, too, fear for not only their safety but their free expression, something so crucial in an academic setting. lilia luciano, cbs news, ithaca, new york. the university of pennsylvania is taking action to combat anti-semitic incidents on campus there. in a statement to the penn community, the school president, liz magill, announced steps including the creation of a task force on anti-semitic. -- rant anti-semitism. they've been called on to do more and said she would address islamaphobia on campus, as well. and the house voted not to expel new york republican congressman george santos. most of his fellow republicans and 31 democrats voted against expulsion yesterday while

criminal proceedings and a house ethics investigation continues. the effort to kick out santos was led by other new york republicans. >> i'm not claiming a victory. i'm just saying that this is a victory for the process. due process won today, not george santos. >> santos has pleaded not guilty to a host of criminal charges including stealing from donors. and the house also voted against censuring michigan disappointment congresswoman rashida tlaib. last week republican representative marjorie taylor greene introduced a resolution to censure her over her comments criticizing israel and in support of palestinians. she also accused tlaib of leading an insurrection at the capitol last month. she's the first palestinian american woman elected to congress. and donald trump jr. is due back on the witness stand today in the new york civil fraud trial against his father, the family, and their company. yesterday donald trump's oldest son testified he never worked on his father's financial

statements and left the accounting to others. the trumps are accused of financial fraud for allegedly inflating the value of their properties. they deny any wrongdoing. former president trump's classified documents trial could be delayed. yesterday a federal judge in florida indicated that she may push back the start of the trial scheduled for next may. she pointed to the other criminal cases trump is facing, and the amount of evidence his attorneys need to review. trump has pleaded not guilty. the texas rangers are world series champions for the first time in their history. >> and their 63rd season -- it's happened! the texas rangers win the world series! >> they beat the arizona diamondbacks 5-0 in phoenix last night. the rangers finish this year's post season a record 11-0 on the road. shortstop corey seager was named world series mvp.

he's only the fourth player in history to win the award two times. >> yeah, it's really awesome. just to be able to celebrate with these guys. they came to play every day. as resilient as the team was it's great. there is what it's about. >> this is wild. we did it. the journey we were on to get here, incredible, and we finished it off. >> and of course there will be a parade in arlington to celebrate the championship. former indiana university basketball coach bob knight is being remembered for his accomplishments and his fiery temper. knight's family says the hall of fame coach died at his home in bloomington. knight is one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history with 902 victories in 42 seasons at army, indiana, and texas tech. he led the hoosiers to three ncaa championships. he was fired in 2000 after a confrontation with a student. bob knight was 83 years old.

"the tennesseean" reports a former memphis police officer charged in the beating death of tyre nichols is changing his plea on federal charges. desmond mills jr. is expected to change his plea to guilty today on several charges including

violating nichols' civil rights. nichols died three days after he was beaten by police during a january traffic stop. mills and four other former police officers pleaded not guilty to murder charges in state court. the "milwaukee journal" says a cold case organization believes jimmy hoffa's body is buried under what used to be the home of the milwaukee brewers. the case breakers says it has information suggesting the body was moved to a site in 1995 at what was third base at the old county stadium. now the facility was demolished to make room for a new studio. -- new stadium. hoffa disappeared in 1975. his body has never been discovered. the "new york times" says birds in the americas will no longer be named after people. the group responsible for standardizing english bird names says it will rename all species honoring people. it's being done to no longer pay tribute to those with racist pasts such as john james audubon.
