comforter in chief. president biden and the first lady head to lewiston, maine, today to pay their respects to a city still grappling with the murders of 18 innocent lives. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the israeli army is launching heavy attacks from land, sea, and air. israeli troops have encircled gaza city in heavy fighting, and prime minister benjamin netanyahu said, quote, we are the height of the battle. 23 have been killed since the start of the operation. hamas puts the palestinian death toll above 9,000, more than a third of them children. secretary of state antony blinken landed in israel a short time ago where he's expected to urge leaders for a pause in the fighting. cbs' ian lee joining us from tel aviv. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this will be a delicate, diplomatic dance for the

secretary of state. on one hand he wants to show u.s. support for israel, but on the other he'll apply pressure on israeli officials to limit civilian deaths as fear of a wider regional conflict grow. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken landed in tel aviv on his second trip to the middle east since the conflict began nearly a month ago. he says he's focused on protecting innocent civilians caught in the crossfire, getting humanitarian aid into gaza, and reaching a sustainable peace between israel and the palestinians. >> we're determined that this conflict not spread. >> reporter: the visit comes three days after the gates opened at the rafah crossing, allowing hundreds of foreign passport holders including dozens of americans, passage from war-torn gaza into egypt. >> i don't know if i'm ever going to see the family that i left behind or the friends that i left behind. people are dying. everybody's dying. nobody's safe. >> reporter: the biden administration says it supports temporary pauses in fighting in order to get americans and hostages out of gaza and

humanitarian aid in. though it's not in favor of a general cease-fire. israel's military says the encirclement of gaza city is complete as they expand into the territory. hamas says an israeli air strike on the bureu refugee camp is believed to have killed at least a dozen palestinians. while visiting the uk, vice president kamala harris called some of the images out of gaza, quote, heartbreaking. >> it is absolutely tragic when there is ever anywhere any loss of innocent life. >> reporter: though the vice president also said the administration is not telling israel how to conduct the war. last night gaza once again saw heavy fighting. flares illuminated the sky as smoke obscured israeli troop movements. but this comes as independent u.n. experts say there's a risk of genocide in gaza as civilian -- as the civilian death toll

mounts, although israel rejects that. but the u.n. in gaza did say that its fuel supplies have completely run dry. >> ian lee in tel aviv, thank you so much. the house passed a republican-backed bill for more than $14 billion in aid for israel. but the measure does not include assistance for ukraine, and that sets up a battle with the senate. the white house wants nearly $106 billion in aid for israel, ukraine, and other national security concerns. president biden has threatened to veto a bill that only includes aid for israel. and a stunning fall from grace for ftx founder sam bankman-fried, once of the head of the second largest crypto exchange, now a convicted felon facing up to 110 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of stealing billions from customers and investors. the story from cbs' erroll barnett. >> reporter: sam bankman-fried found guilty on all seven charges of fraud and conspiracy.

>> this kind of fraud, this kind of corruption is as old as time. and we have no patience for it. >> reporter: the entrepreneur and founder of crypto trading company ftx is accused of stealing as much as $10 billion in customer funds, defrauding those customers, and the lenders of alameda research, its affiliated hedge fund. in november of last year, the company filed for bankruptcy, and bankman-fried resigned as ceo. >> sam bankman-fried perpetrated one of the biggest financial frauds in american history. a multibillion dollar scheme designed to make him the king of crypto. >> reporter: the jury of nine women and three men began deliberating on the seven counts that include wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering. key witnesses against the 31-year-old included his ex-girlfriend and former roommates who also pleaded guilty as co-conspirators. >> also a message -- it's a warning, this case, to every single fraudster out there who thinks that they're untouchable.

>> reporter: mr. bankman-fried's legal team maintains his innocence and says they will appeal. but still, this 31-year-old has experienced one of the most swift falls from grace in modern memory. almost one year since his crypto company chanced, he is now a convicted felon, and it's not over for him yet. the government intends to bring additional charges severed from this case in a separate trial to begin in march of 2024. erroll barnett, cbs news, new york. eric trump is expected back on the stand today in the trump organization's civil fraud trial. donald trump's second oldest son followed donald jr. yesterday testifying he was never involved or aware of his father's finish -- financial statements despite being an executive vice president. the trump are accused of inflating the value of properties to obtain financing and make deals. former problem and his daughter ivanka are set to testify next week. the senate was able to work

around republican senator tommy tuberville's blockade of military promotions to confirm three top officers. that includes admiral lisa franchetti to be the new chief of naval operations, making her the first female member of the joint chiefs of staff. here's scott macfarlane. >> reporter: hundreds of top military positions remain in limbo tonight, held up by alabama republican tommy tuberville who rose to fame as coach of auburn university's football team. >> mr. tuberville says there's no risk to the military. >> there absolutely is risk to the military. and that's maybe because he hasn't served in uniform. >> reporter: tuberville is blocking action on 376 nominees, protesting a biden administration policy allowing service members paid time off to travel out of state for abortion services. >> why will you punish them for something they've got nothing to do with it? >> reporter: wednesday night, a dam burst among his fellow republicans as tuberville stood and objected to 61 straight nominees.

>> i object. i object. with that, madam president, i object. >> reporter: they claim foreign adversaries could take advantage of the dysfunction. >> xi jinping is watching, so is putin. they're loving it. how dumb can we be, man? >> are you at risk of weakening the military? >> no. as i've told you, if i thought there was any problem with readiness we wouldn't be doing that. >> reporter: the deputy secretary of defense disagreed. >> the hold is unnecessary, unprecedented, and unsafe. and it's bad for our military. >> reporter: tuberville is being asked about marine corps commandant eric smith who was forced to hold down two high-level positions because of the senator's holds and had an apparent heart attack last weekend. smith had spoken about the demanding nature of the job. >> it is not sustainable. >> reporter: tuberville bristled at the suggestion he was responsible. >> this guy's going to work 18, 20 hours a day no matter what. that's what we do. i did that for years. >> reporter: senators managed to work through tuberville's hold to confirm those three senior military leaders, but tuberville's not backing down.

this happened in wappingers falls, new york. five were firefighters and police. preliminary reports indicate a contractor struck a gas line. causing the explosion and fire. we are learning more about the pilot who allegedly threatened to shoot another pilot, and arraignment day for the man accused in the killing of tupac shakur. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the las vegas sun" reports an ex-gang leader charged in the murder of rapper tupac shakur pleaded not guilty. 60-year-old duane keffe dee davis is accused of providing the gun and orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting in las vegas that killed shakur. davis is the only person still alive who was in the vehicle where the shots were fired. no one else has ever been charged. in 2018, davis admitted he was involved in the shooting in a series of interviews. the "associated press" says a pilot accused of threatening to shoot a commercial airline

captain in an air force reserve lieutenant colonel. jonathan dunn's military service was revealed yesterday in a court filing. he was indicted last month on charges of interfering with a flight crew. he allegedly threatened to shoot the captain if their flight last year was diverted to give a passenger medical attention. dunn was relieved of his air force command for refusing a mandatory covid vaccine in 2021. the "seattle times" reports a new lawsuit against horizon air and alaska airlines. it's being brought by some of the passengers on a flight when an off-duty pilot allegedly tried to shut down the engines. authorities say pilot joe emerson was riding in the cockpit of a horizon air flight last month when he tried to pull handles that would have cut fuel to the engines. he was subdued, and the plane safely diverted to portland. the lawsuit claims passengers suffered emotional stress. still to come, an unbearable appetite. a home in florida gets a

(♪♪) here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ a bear didn't need a costume to munch on some halloween candy. it was caught on video eating candy from a table outside a florida home. bystanders shooting the video can be heard saying the bear is going to have a pretty bad stomachache since he was eating the candy and the wrapper still on. the fda is proposing a ban on an additive that's found in some sodas. brominated vegetable oil or bvo is used in some citrus-flavored beverages. the agency says it is no longer considered safe for people after some health studies. california became the first

state to ban the ingredient last month. it's now used in at least 90 products, mostly sodas. two big retailers offering thanksgiving meals at a discount, and trouble for one of the largest drug store chains. here's jarred hill with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: hey, happy friday. wall street soared higher thursday amid signs the fed's pause on interest rate hikes may last a little longer. the dow jumped 564 points. the nasdaq, 232, and the s&p 500 rose a solid 79 points. no corporate bonuses at walgreens this year. there are reports the drug store chain is cutting back as the incumbent deals with the disappointing quarterly earnings and labor issues. the announcement came the same week the staff held a three-day walkout pushing for better working conditions. trouble for plant-based beyond meat. the company is cutting 19% of its non-production work force after a weaker-than-expected third quarter. beyond meat is also reviewing
