from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. >> bay area protesters trying to block a military ship from leaving, some even tying themselves to it. their demands for a cease-fire in the middle east. good afternoon. i'm ryan yamamoto. we have been developing this story at the port of oakland. take a look at earlier today with demonstrators blocking the entrance where the kb orlando was docked. we are told it is a military supply vessel. our da lin joins us live from the port. what are you seeing and hearing? i understand there may be some new developments in this protest. >> reporter: that is correct. that ship, kb orlando, is on its way out of the port of oakland as we speak. new information coming out within the last 10 minutes, there were three protesters who tied themselves and held onto the rope ladder to the opening of the ship and that kept the ship here for hours. apparently,

oakland police or the coast guard officers might have removed those protesters and that allowed the ship to leave. i am watching the ship leave the port of oakland. a few hundred palestinian supporters and protesters gathering here at the port of oakland. police have blocked them off at three different areas. there was one group of about 20 people that were demonstrating right next to the ship. three protesters were holding onto a rope ladder mounted to the ship entrance. that ship was supposed to leave sometime this morning but with those protesters refusing to allow the entryway, the ship could not leave. workers tried to ship back to the dock and protesters were calling it a small victory. right around 2:50 p.m., it appears police

officers were able to -- they have obtained or removed the protesters from that ladder and that allowed them -- i'm looking at the ship and it is actively leaving the port. still, quite a few protesters that are pretty disappointed. this ship was headed to carry arms and weapons to go to aid israel but we have not been able to confirm that with the u.s. government. right now, the coast guard still monitoring the situation but it looks like this situation could continue. >> i can hear those protesters very active in the background. what was their reaction once they saw that ship leave? >> they were chanting, shame to

the police officers and the coast guard for removing those protesters who were holding onto the rope ladder. they are still very active. they are chanting. they are drumming. they are trying to keep their spirits up but they understand that their purpose here is falling short of keeping this ship docked at the port of oakland. >> thank you. there has been no letting up in the fighting in the middle east . israeli ground forces have surrounded gaza city as the aerial bombardment continues. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is palling to destroy hamas . the bow to keep fighting him after he met with u.s. secretary of state antony blinken who asked for a pause to allow aid into gaza and gives civilians a chance to escape.

>> we have provided israel advised that only the best of friends can offer on how to minimize civilian deaths. >> we know many of you have connections to the war in the middle east and we are here for you as development scum in. go to our website , www.kpix.com. president joe biden and first lady joe biden are meeting with families and first responders in lewiston, maine . they visited a memorial to pay respect to the victims of last week's deadly mass shooting. that is where gunmen killed 18 people, wounded 13 others. the mass shooting at a bar and bowling alley now the deadliest shooting in maine's history. passengers aboard an alaska airlines flight where an off-duty airline attempted to cut up the engines has filed a lawsuit. the suit was filed by three passengers who claim the airline did not properly evaluate joseph emerson who was from the east bay before he was seated in the jumpseat of the cockpit. the suit also details what happened on october 22

when the engines were tampered with. they say the plane dramatically pitched forward as it were in a nosedive. it says if the airline had been more vigilant, emerson would not have been in a position to, quote, nearly kill everyone on board. after the incident, emerson told police he had a nervous breakdown, had been depressed and recently used magic mushrooms. alaska airlines previously said the cruise had nothing that would have prevented them from letting emerson fly. the airline said it is thankful for the quick action of its crew, keeping up unsafe. ftx founder sam bankman-fried has been convicted of fraud and conspiracy related to the failure of his crypto exchange. his efforts to explain his actions while under oath did not convince the jury. >> i did not ever try to commit fraud on anyone. >> reporter: the former ceo of

crypto company ftx has long professed his innocence about allegations that fraud led to his company's collapse last year. >> i underestimated what the market crash could look like. >> took a manhattan jury less than four hours to decide otherwise, convicting the 31-year-old of stealing as much as $10 billion in customer funds and defrauding those customers as well as the lenders of the affiliated hedge fund. prosecutors are calling this, quote, one of the biggest financial frauds in american history. >> the cryptocurrency industry might be new but this kind of fraud, this kind of corruption is as old as time. >> reporter: bankman-fried stood silently as the verdict was read. >> he was not credible on the stand. when your only defense is your credibility and saying, i did not know what i was doing, rose to the level of criminal conduct, that is a rough place. >> reporter: jessica levinson believes the jury did not buy

the defendant's argument that bankman-fried simply made mistakes with no criminal intent . witnesses testified they saw the wrongdoings firsthand including his ex-girlfriend and former alameda ceo caroline ellison. >> they said sam bankman-fried knew exactly what he was doing. he knew what was wrong. the defense was not able to rebut that. >> my client maintains his innocence and we will continue to fight the charges against him. >> bankman-fried now faces a sentence of 110 years in prison. >> could still be the case that if bankman-fried ever does walk out of a federal prison, he will be a poor man. >> sentencing is set for march 28. structured members of the union representing staff in the san francisco unified school district began voting on new contract that happens today. it includes a $9000 salary range

for certified educators in their first year and a 5% increase in their second year. other educators will get a least $30 per hour or an 8% raise increase in their first year. substitute teachers will get a pay raise. that two-year deal would be retroactive from july 1 of the summer to the summer of 2025. the voting period ends on wednesday. the united educators of san francisco represent teachers, nurses, social workers and other staff members. east bay drivers will have shutdown highways that we can. the closure starts tonight at 9:00 . it is not scheduled to end until 4:00 on monday. crews will repave the road to give drivers a smoother ride. the latest u.s. jobs report is out and shows employers scaled back on hiring. employers added $150,000 jobs in october. the autoworkers

strike likely distorted the previous number. 20 live is former edd director michael renick. did any sectors fare better than any others in this latest jobs report? >> healthcare continues to be a strong gainer as it has been for the past decade or more. it gained 58,000 jobs that has been averaging about 54,000 jobs over the past 12 months. the government added 51,000 jobs, pretty much what it had been averaging. the other sectors did not lose jobs but they did not show construction information, technology, business services. they did not lose jobs but they showed no significant gain. the year started off with a sharp , sharp slowdown in terms of the pace of job growth. we have been averaging about 260,000

jobs per month. this morning, the report for october showed a gain of only 150,000. >> what about wages? where do they stand right now? >> we have been seeing steady wage gains. over year wage gain for october was 4.1%. that was below the 4.2% that we had in september and below the numbers we had seen earlier this year. just as the job growth has slowed, so too has wage gains. the wage gains have slowed down far less than this sharp drop in job gains. >> thank you for joining us. it is a top complaint for many b.a.r.t. riders, dirty trains. we look at what it takes to get them clean day in and day out. see how the south bay community is coming together to

b.a.r.t. recently or heard complaint from other riders, most people know the transit agency has been facing some serious problems. one major complaint, cleanliness. b.a.r.t. is doing more regular deep cleanings of the train cars and wilson walker gives us a look at how that is all done. >> what kind of stuff do i see? what don't i see? >> reporter: kicking off his overnight shift at b.a.r.t.'s yard, demariante clark has seen it all. >> i have seen a lot. i have seen animals. i have seen chickens. >> we see gum, graffiti. >> reporter: overseeing the cleaning crew is rose burditt who, after 28 years has developed a well-trained dye for grime. >> you can see the dirt on the baseboards. >> reporter: this is no every day cleaning. this is the deep

clean, every effort to fight back against whatever the bay area throws at these trains. >> every 400 hours when they come in, from top to bottom. >> each car takes two people two to three hours. it is not just scrubbing. the entire car is doused in disinfectant. >> everything people touch, even the things people don't touch. >> while the new trains are said to be easier to clean, they still take a beating. >> sometimes this is excess pain from us having to spray paint the seat. the graffiti does not come off. >> this is not the only cleaning the train gets. it is swept out a couple times during the day. they are cleaned out at the end of the day but this thorough deep cleaning, that was originally done every 900 hours. they backed it down to 400 hours during the pandemic and the people who clean your b.a.r.t. trains out, they

understand what it is that riders are seeing every day. >> i know sometimes i get on a train. if there is a dirty seat, i won't sit there. >> does it drive you crazy when you see people throw trash? >> drives me crazy but i am a customer at that time so i just have to watch them. there is nothing i can do until i make a call and have someone board the train to please take care of that ice cream. i know it is tough. that is why we are doing everything we can. >> you never know when you are getting -- every night, a handful of cars get the full treatment no matter what they bring in before heading back out into the wild for the next 400 hours. >> next week, we are taking a deep dive into all of b.a.r.t.'s problems since the

pandemic and from well before. are special weeklong series, b.a.r.t. on the brink starts on sunday. a group of men and women volunteers put in some work today and east san jose to transform the living space of a senior facility. the nonprofit is removing hazardous debris and allowing her to safely use her backyard. it is one more of the projects they took up last saturday for rebuilding day, making necessary repairs for the most at risk people in our communities. >> we are focused on housing preservation and making sure we can keep homes affordable for our local neighbors in need. this work is extremely important to keep folks healthy and safe in their homes but to make sure they are able to stay in their communities for a long time to come. silicon valley helps over 400 local homeowners a year. you can see if you are eligible and can apply online. a nice day to get outside. meteorologist jessica burch shows us when our conditions might change. >> for the past couple of days,

we have been seeing sunny skies. we are noticing that today too but heading into this weekend, high pressure will move its way out and be replaced with cooler air from the north. it will allow for windier conditions. believe it or not, we have some rain in the forecast. let's talk about this. into the next couple of days, these cold fronts moved their way and. cloudy conditions from the leftovers of this system. this right here will continue to sweep its way into the bay area. we will see some light showers associated with it. we will see rain saturday night, early sunday morning. noticed the light showers sweep and from offshore, impacting most of the bay area but they are light. that will continue to be the trend for us . daytime highs

today sitting above average throughout the bay area by about 10 degrees. let's take a look at our daytime highs. 70s in san francisco. we are warming up into the 80s all throughout our east bay. concord, antioch, although into livermore in the santa clara valley, we will all be sitting above average today. half moon bay, 68 today. a little warmer than what we are used too but let me show you the next seven days. we are not holding on tight to these 80s for too much longer. i just told you about the cold fronts moving in. we will be seeing these cloudy skies lasting into next week, all the way into our monday forecast. as we head over into the bay, anywhere from san francisco into oakland, we will be seeing 60s as early as tomorrow. the 49ers are resting and recharging this week. the big news one of them is celebrating and it has nothing to do with

a new way to address rising sea levels in our project are the report. the plan to track the planet's water supply. a section of one of oakland's busiest streets now has a new name in honor of the late rapper tupac shakur. macarthur boulevard between grand and van buren is now tupac shakur way. the city council voted unanimously on renaming that street. the celebration and unveiling was highlighted today. his rise to fame and lasting impact on the world of music and social justice. >> i wanted to be here today to say he is a leader. he is an innovator. his duality, his fight for the people, the fight resonated all around the globe.
