archdiocese has always had a special place for mary, the mother of jesus. our cathedral has been named in her honor and many institutions are. she is celebrated in many ways by many ethnic and cultural groups. our attitude is not that we honor her, but that she does us the honor of giving us her constant care, love and protection. and leading us to her son, jesus. the rosary is connected to mary. in 1961, san francisco was the site of perhaps the largest religious gathering in the united states. when 500,000 people gathered in golden gate park to pray the rosary in 1961. we have some grainy photos we hope to show you. the rosary rally has been renewed in the city. on october 5th, 2019 a rosary rally will be held . the ninth year in a roe. we gather to pray to mary to express our faith in communal love . we will talk

to greet this historic day. this historic day being the arrivals of the beatles at the airport. what is he like about the beatles? thank you for joining us on "mosaic" today. i have two special guest with me and we will talk about mary, life with mary and upcoming events such as a rosary rally. on my left is the consent of all. thank you. on his left is raymond frost. i want to find out about you. i know that you are the head of the legion of mary, the local chapter. can you tell us
5:35 am
about that? >> we have a number of catholics, men, women, who are committed to the love of mary tonight themselves to mary and carry out daily activities but also in their time, their free time they are committed to apostolic work to try to bring christ to the world and that is our mission. the legion of mary is in all countries and it has been in san francisco since 1933 . we are really pleased to be able to be here to talk about the rosary rally. >> the consent of all, you work at the parish of the cathedral of st. mary's. what is your particular work? >> i have the ministry to the sick at home bound for the cathedral of saint mary of the assumption. i do is hand on and i walked up the steps of the gospel and helping people who are very sick and i visit 16 skilled nursing homes with their hospice and dementia units . and i find people in crisis always reaching out to mary. it is wonderful to work at the cathedral. i tell people that visit us that your parishes like your bedroom and
5:36 am
the cathedral is like a living room in the house of god. >> we are talking about mary who has a relationship special with all of us and with each of you and in particular i think ray, you work as a full-time sacristan at saint ignatius church. a domestic responsibility. taking care of the household. >> that is right. i look upon it as the house of mary. mary in some ways is the head of the church, not taking over from the bishops , but she has a special place in making sure everything is set for her children, all of us are children of mary. because we are also united to christ by the baptism. she looks out for all the details in the church that only she can really notice it just like she did at the wedding at cana she provided the extra wine she needed and mary gives us that and continues to this very day.
5:37 am
and i have seen that in my work. >> that sounds good. your work as well. helping people to reach to mary in their illness and suffering is beneficial. >> it is wonderful. realizing our local church sits in the context of the universal church. i have to point to an interesting man no longer with us but he was a great student of the blessed mother. he did a fantastic piece of work called the dictionary of the operations of the blessed mother and in it he documents 2600 apparitions of the blessed mother, of mary, around the world and among the 2600 -- these were approved by local bishops. 15 have been approved by the vatican, the holy see for veneration and prayer throughout the world. i find that people have personal relationships with the blessed mother the experience her internally and in into
5:38 am
locations and conversations and certainly by the power of the rosary. as they meditate and they articulate. the belief in the blessed mother. >> that is what i am getting out. i am learning that in my own private life. kind of a new practice for me but when i am anxious or disturbed or don't know what to do with my brain i say, now i can go to mary and i, site for instance, one decade of the rosary and i can speak to her and it calms me so much and i am not frittering away my spiritual energy on anxiety. >> a wonderful thing. if you want to know mary you have to really process gabriel the archangel who says, hail mary, full of grace, the lord is with you. when you slow down and you start to take that in and start to meditate on each of the words of the great archangel you hear the words of the eternal father coming through the blessed mother and
5:39 am
you begin to see her role and for those of us that might fear in jesus, often times jesus comes as a baby. she holds the baby jesus toward you and she brings jesus with her. >> no question about that. i find jesus a little intimidating and mary is a helpful mother. the sort of help i need and got in sunny. ray, you have always had devotion to mary , always understood her place in your life. >> i was raised in san francisco in a catholic school and catholic family. we pray the rosary together as a family. in my high school days maybe it was more of a chore, the rosary. before that it was really a lifeline. there will difficult times in my family and i believe mary saved me from drowning, as a young boy.
5:40 am
when i think back to those days, i am very, very grateful. and when i turned 21 it was a difficult time for me in the rosary came to my mind and it was a grace with a miraculous metal. i encourage everyone to have a miraculous metal that they wear . and the rosary, the secret of the rosary, that book had so much inspiration for me. history of the rosary. the devotion. praying the rosary as a meditation. burning the gospel. a summary of the gospel and just like a foundation for my whole life, i would say. and ever since then, that is close to 50 years, i felt blessed and we will talk about the rosary rally later and that was a key role. >> we will take a brief break and we will return and talk about the history of the rosary rally and the future of the rosary in san francisco.

gate park. a famous event in san francisco history. i have to admit, we were both there. i was a 12-year-old kid. you were younger. this was father patrick payton and he came to san francisco archdiocese and put on a rosary rally in golden gate park. let's look at photos from it. we will run some slides on the screen. what these are are still's from a very grainy documentary about 15 minutes long and you can see this on youtube and we will tell you where you can find it. this is a family rosary and if we can move through the files, gigantic crowd estimated that 500,000 people. and another shot , same crowd, stretching to the park. father payton his logo , the family that prays together stays together. take it from here for the next slide. patrick payton was the
5:45 am
emissary. >> he had the mission from our lady to travel all around the world to promote the rosary and peace in the world. this was a time after world war ii. people were really desirous of peace and our lady of fatima did ask for the rosary and he responded to that and he held these rallies all over the world in manila, south africa, europe, ireland. he was from ireland originally , but he went to the united states and became a holy cross priest. in hollywood, he made tv shows that were very famous. many actors were part of it. he was very well known and we had 500,000 from all over san francisco. >> this photo is significant . let's see the next one, if we can. what we are seeing is the recitation of the rosary, which 500,000 people did, up on the stage where families. different colors and
5:46 am
ethnicities and languages. they led the rosary. we have one more slide. we are back in the present. that was 9061. you and i were there and it was a major event. father patrick payton had this mission and went over the world with it. tell me about the rededication of the rosary rally in san francisco. >> we know many people have continued to pray the rosary individually and families. we have not had the experience of coming together as a family or families in the church. i felt called and others did to restart this on the 50th anniversary of that. in 2011 where he gathered together , legion of mary, members of knights of the rhombus and catholics and priests and sisters and we organize this with the idea we would like to go back to the polo fields but
5:47 am
for practical reasons it was not possible. we were at the civic center and it was very inspiring. >> you have this rosary rally which includes a gathering, a procession. this will be the ninth year in a roe. for our viewers, coming up, should be a week from now, october 5th will be the rosary rally in san francisco. can you tell us something about that? >> we will have mass starting at 10:00 in the cathedral. we will begin in the cathedral with holy mass and at the end of the celebration of holy mass we will have a procession to the united nations plaza. the last several years the rally has been held totally at the cathedral but we are going back to a place where we have been for other rosary rallies to the united nations plaza alongside market street near hyde street, i believe. we will listen to a talk by a priest
5:48 am
and the scapular of mary and have adoration of the blessed sacrament and the rosary. and that will conclude with an addition. we are looking forward to a spiritual grace for all. >> that sounds great. everyone is welcome to attend. >> we hope as many people can participate , will take advantage of the spiritual opportunity to help our city, help each other, encourage each other. help are well. >> i don't like crowds, generally. but i find something so uplifting about the processions as such ceremonies with the mary at the head. we have a rosary rally, consecration to the archdiocese, what is the spiritual benefit of these events? >> remember what a consecration is . it is the entrustment to the blessed mother for protection , for healing , the
5:49 am
presence. i go back to our own mothers. when the baby cries, the mother comes running and when we cried, this mother comes running. she is always hovering over us and protecting us the archbishop of san francisco has entrusted the entire archdiocese . our theme is the family rosary and i like what ray is saying. it is a family of families, a community of communities, a people of peoples. all entrusted to our blessed mother. one other thing is remembering that the scapular which pope pius xii said, this is a sign of consecration in perilous times. i would say given what is going on in the world these days, we live in perilous times . and the idea that the mother of god can hover over us and protect us from whatever storm there is , is a beautiful thing. >> very much so. let's take another break and we will talk more in detail about the rosary rally, coming up .
5:52 am
welcome back. we are talking about the blessed virgin mary and some of the hard work she is doing on our behalf. i have a quotation from benedict xvi, the pope emeritus who said we made sure that mary follows our footsteps with gentle concern, dispels the gloomy moments of darkness and distress, reassures us with her motherly hand. we have talked about the rosary rally coming up and we of a flyer or a poster , perhaps we can run that. the family rosary rally , significant name. can you take us through what is on this image and what the meaning is? >> this is a very old image
5:53 am
and it comes out of the 20s and 30s and what it says is it was a great quotation from saint dominic and talks about the fact that by these two signs, the blessed mother will save the world and we know that mary is full of grace and the lord is with her and that is how she does it and you see the heart exposed. to which we are consecrating ourselves or renewing the consecration. the theme of the painting is we are one in the family of god. we are uniquely universal and we are universally unique as the people of god. and the interesting thing about this is we will have the carmelite fathers , we have a wonderful speaker that will speak about the scapular. and at the same time we have the dominicans coming in with a big scapular to show you the two gifts. in one hand and the painting, she will have the rosary and on
5:54 am
the other hand she will have the scapular made by our great sisters at the monastery. that is a beautiful way of processing down the city of st. francis to proclaim our friendship and ownership . >> it is the city of st. francis. in the schedule of events is on this. not readable here possibly, but there is a website. rosary rally sf .com. you will find this information. the archbishop says mass of the cathedral, then they take the blessed sacrament i think there is a statue of mary. and all this company travels down to the u.n. plaza. >> one thing before he leaves the cathedral is he will do the prayer of investiture of the scapular which has specific spiritual value. extending the mantle of the blessed mother's protection over every person. we
5:55 am
distribute scapular's and they will be blessed by the archbishop and everyone will be invested and that is a gift from the church to the people of god. >> i must say from looking from the outside at a procession, it is touching to see people coming out as a group and displaying their faith and in such a gentle and peaceful way. ray , the focus of this is always peaceful and always gentle and always nurturing. and my wrong? >> the rosary , we look upon it as a solution to all our ills. you may say he could be a medicine for the soul. we know the holy eucharist has primary place in our faith that the rosary has been given to us like an extra added thing that all of us can pray at any time, day or night while we are working. or playing. riding in our car and running that marathon. like my father used to do, praying the rosary.
5:56 am
he thought at least half of the people running in the marathon were praying the rosary. i don't know if that is true but he managed to complete -- in his 60s he was running marathons and praying the rosary. >> i think us a before when i am anxious and waiting and i don't know where should be i will say a decade of the rosary. you are talking about , we are promoting the rosary as theological catechesis, really, it contains relationship to mary and prayer to her but it also you meditate on the highlights or the lights of the life of her son and we call these mysteries of the rosary. >> life, death , and resurrection of jesus. the rosary can be called a compendium of the gospel or a summary . it can be a foundation. it was a foundation for my spiritual life starting when i was young and especially
5:57 am
when i went into my adult life and all the cares and needs of my life and i found the rosary to be a great help and assistance. >> i would like to add that at the end of the rosary rally we will do benediction and the one thing we say about the blessed mother is she brings us to jesus. i noticed in my work with end-of-life cases that i deal with in hospice care and doing special care and people at the end of life often times have the rosary in their hand. they wrap it around their hand in a prepare themselves to receive jesus. the power of the rosary, we call it a couple things. we call it the latter to heaven. we call it the spiritual weapon of choice to protect us from the diabolical. we call it the way to jesus, as a roadway to jesus. spirituality is deep and wide and unique across all cultures and across all generations. >> we have one minute left. would you issue an invitation to our people to come to the rosary? >> i would ask you to please come and join us in solidarity as a family of families.
5:58 am
lifting up the rosary, inspired with our spiritual father, the archbishop of san francisco, come and receive the sacraments. of the eucharist, of reconciliation , the investiture of the scapular. processing with the holy statue of the blessed mother. and coming together as a community united in faith. [ speaking in a global language ] >> a man. thank you for being here. thank you for joining us on this episode of "mosaic". it has been nice to have you. come to the rosary rally.
5:59 am
when we challenged ourselves to create the world's most emotional and sustainable vehicle, we had tothink differently. we had to push the boundaries to not just create a car but a movement. every fisker ocean is produced with over 50 kilograms of ethically sourced, recycled materials. it's about accomplishing something bigger than itself. a clean future for all.
