a new stage of war. israel says ground forces are battling hamas militants deep inside gaza's largest city. and censured. the house formally represents -- reprimands democrat rashida tlaib in an extraordinary rebuke of her rhetoric about the israel-hamas war. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. now we begin with the israel havana -- israel-hamas war. prime minister netanyahu says he foresees them controlling the territory after the war. this as the idf says ground troops have entered the heart of gaza and trapped the senior most leader in an underground bunker. now thousands of civilians are fleeing gaza city as the battle draws closer. doug williams is in tel aviv for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so much talk of a cease-fire, and yet yesterday as you said we saw thousands of palestinian civilians fleeing south while

israeli forces continue their efforts to take full control of gaza. israeli leadership contends it's possible to do both simultaneously with no end in sight to the bloodshed. israeli forces say there's no fierce fighting in the heart of gaza city, with just a few dozen hamas militants left there. >> we had serious battle with a group of hamas inside a school that they built tunnels in it. >> reporter: israel's military released videos of air strikes on hamas targets and also of this destroyed amusement park showing what they claim are tunnels built by hamas. the violence has driven civilians to the south of the region. some waving white flags as they flee their homes. >> we want to live on our land. >> reporter: at the rafah crossing aid trucks lined up while injured civilians and foreign nationals including americans were allowed to flee from southern gaza into egypt. >> we're going to be focused on getting folks out, getting aid

in, and getting those hostages released. >> reporter: yesterday president biden told reporters he has formally asked israeli prime minister netanyahu for a humanitarian pause in fighting. >> did ask for a pause. he passed. >> reporter: though netanyahu has repeatedly rebuffed international calls for a general cease-fire until the hostages are released. tuesday at the western wall in jerusalem hundreds of israelis gathered in prayer marking one month of the conflict. >> we pray to have our loved ones come back today. ♪ >> reporter: the prayers came one month after hamas took more than 240 hostages in their deadly raids that also killed hundreds of israelis. and according to reports, president biden is said to believe that an agreement on pausing the war for just a matter of days could result in the release of some of the israelis still being held hostage by hamas. and as the day goes on, we're expecting to learn more about where the thousands we saw

fleeing gaza yesterday ended up in their continued search for safety. anne-marie? >> all right, thank you so much. doug williams in tel aviv. the house voted to censure michigan democratic congresswoman rashida tlaib over her comments about the israel-hamas war. the 234-188 vote came after 22 democrats joined republicans to issue the extraordinary rebuke. tlaib, the only palestinian american in congress, vowed to not be silenced. she became emotional earlier in the day when addressing her colleagues. >> palestinian people are not disposable. we are human beings just like anyone else. my city, my grandmother, like all palestinians just wants to live her life with freedom and human dignity we all deserve. >> tlaib says her criticism of israel has always been directed

toward its government. republicans have called her comments anti-semitic. and now to the election. democrats have good reason to celebrate in what could serve as a barometer to next year's presidential race. kentucky governor andy beshear won re-election. ohio preserved abortion rights, and virginia democrats won full control of the state house. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us now in new york to break it down for us. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. it has been a week of ups and downs for the democratic party, but this morning democrats are cheering. big wins in several key states hve party loyalists hopeful about the presidential election. but despite a big night at the state level, the road to victory in 2024 is all but certain. it was a big election night for democrats across the country as the party scored victories in ohio, kentucky, and virginia. in ohio, voters approved a measure to amend the state constitution establishing the

right to abortion. [ cheers ] crowds cheered as results rolled in just one year after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. >> abortion access is the law of the land in ohio. >> reporter: in kentucky, democratic governor andy beshear was re-elected to a second term. >> tonight kentucky made a choice. [ cheers ] a choice not to move to the right or to the left but to move forward for every single family. [ cheers ] >> reporter: beshear has relished in broad approval for his handling of the pandemic and natural disasters. and in virginia, democrats are celebrating two wins at the state level, retaining their hold on the majority in the state senate and flipping the house of delegates. these victories come as president biden faces daunting poll numbers with less than a year to go until the presidential election. in a social media post, the

president said, "voters vote, polls don't. let's go win next year." also in ohio, voters passed a measure that will commercialize, regulate, and tax the adult use of marijuana, making it 24th state to pass such a measure. the outcome means recreational marijuana is legal in nearly half of the country. >> all right, naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. in two other races of note, the mother of a 10-year-old girl who was killed in last year's school shooting in uvalde, texas, lost her bid to become mayor there. kimberly mata rubio was pushed -- has pushed for stricter gun laws and police accountability since a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers. a former uvalde mayor who served two terms more than a decade ago won the election. and one of the five men exonerated in the central park five case won a seat on the new york city council. yusef salaam and four other black and latino men were

convicted in 1989 in the rape and beating of a white jogger in central park. salaam was arrested when he was 15 years old and imprisoned for almost seven years. their convictions were later overturned by dna evidence. >> i saw the light at the end of the tunnel. [ cheers ] >> salaam ran unopposed for the city council seat representing harlem. donald trump's daughter, ivanka trump, is said to take the witness stand today in the new york civil fraud trial against her father, her adult brothers, and their company. she's expected to be questioned about her father's financial statements. the former president testified earlier this week, donald trump jr. and eric last week. they deny any wrongdoing. ivanka trump is not a defendant. the special counsel overseeing the investigation into president biden's son

last month, seven people were killed in a massive smoke and fog pileup involving about 160 vehicles. our planet is well on its way to making 2023 the hottest year ever. new data from european researchers showed this past october was the warmest on record. it was 3.1 degrees warmer than the preindustrial average for the month. that is the fifth straight month that earth has set a record for the hottest month. the mother of a cornell university student accused of making online threat is speaking out, and there was a security scare in our nation's capital. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports police arrested a man carrying a rifle near the u.s. capitol. authorities say 21-year-old ahmir lavon merrell of atlanta was carrying a semiautomatic rifle in a park near senate office buildings. when he refused to drop the weapon, officers tased him. sources tell cbs news the gun was a modified ar-15 rifle.

officials say he appears to have mental health issues. he faces several charges including possession of a firearm on capitol ground. "the rochester democrat and chronicle" reports the mother of a cornell student accused of making online threats against jewish students says he had mental health issues. 21-year-old patrick dai faces a federal charge after authorities say he made threatening online comments last month. his mother says she thinks the threats were partly triggered by a medicine he used for depression and anxiety. she also shared an online apology from her son after the threats were made. "the hill" says the mayor of nashville ordered an investigation into the leak of writings from a school shooter. three adults and three children were shot and killed at the covenant school in march. the shooter was killed by police. the manifesto, which has not been disclosed publicly, is being kept private under court order. the mayor said he is greatly disturbed by the unauthorized release of the writings.
