now more than ever. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay. hello, and happy friday evening. i'm sara donchey. we made it to the end of the week. okay, we have spent a lot of time warning you that starting tomorrow getting into san francisco is going to be hard. thank apec for that. but what if you're already here stuck in place? you'd think tens of thousands of visitors coming to this beautiful city would make business owners ers salivate, but some think the convention and security that comes with it could hurt their bottom line. fencing is already going up in the nob hill area along the intersection. that's where a lot of dignitaries will be staying. the security check points will make it worse, and they haven't even been set up yet. but some restaurants will

really already feeling the effects of this. one general manager said they normally start each night with 120 reservations, and it doesn't look like that will happen next week. >> right now the whole week, 87 reservations. that goes to show that reservations are very slow. a lot of the locals that we draw a lot from, they are expecting a lot of difficulties to get here and pack here. >> some vendors don't want to do deliveries next week. we just ordered a little more ahead of time. >> the owner of key club is hoping he ordered enough before vendors are fenced out. both restaurants are hoping that walk ins make up for the lack of reservations. >> of course people need dinner, they have to eat. since a lot of dignitaries will be in the neighborhood, in the area, we're hoping to be able to have a good show. >> they'll wait and see, but it's been a completely different story already in chinatown where the night market was a hit, bustling

tonight. betty yu shows us the market was so busy, some vendors could barely keep up. >> reporter: judging by the huge turnout on night one of the chinatown night market, it's off to a successful start. some vendors say they ran out of food shortly before the event began. chinatown's famous lantern lined street turned even more vibrant and lively as thousands parked the first ever chinatown night market just days ahead of apec. the international event is expected to bring some 20,000 people to the city. there was a lot of food and a lot to look at. line dancers dazzled the crowd as locals and tourists caught the entertain. this man decorated cup cakes with different floral designs. there's not usually this many people in chinatown? >> yes, this many people

some 200,000 people. bay area jewish leaders are flying across the country to join a march for israel in washington next week. they're expecting more than a quarter of a million people to flood the national mall on tuesday, demanding the release of any hostage hamas is holding. meanwhile at home, jewish families are remembering the hostages. six empty shabbat tables were put on display throughout the bay area. we spoke to a rabbi who's begging for them to be let go. >> we're trying to bring awareness to the fact there's 240 innocent people held hostage by the most barbaric terrorists. the hindu festival of lights, diwali, is celebrated every year. but this year

something is different in oakland. it's the first time the city has had an official celebration of diwali rung in by a city leader. >> diwali is a celebration for the indian and south asian community. >> reporter: you can see this is a packed event. children and adults from different cultures coming together, hoping the message of diwali spreads around the world. this is the oakland city council member for district 4. she is oakland's first ever south asian elected official. she's also a classically trained singer who is passionate about sharing her culture with the community. >> there's a reason for hope, there's a reason for positivity and brightness. >> reporter: along with her performance, people got a taste

when you see a building look like this, you'd think it was abandoned or destroyed in a fire. it was actually the result of a traffic crash in southern california. a sedan blew through a stop sign in long beach yesterday. oh my gosh. it went airborne. a city bus t-boned it. both plowed into the restaurant. luckily it was closed. 11 people were on the bus. two people in the sedan had to be cut out of the wreckage. everyone got out alive with minor to serious injuries. the restaurant owner found out about the crash because a customer sent her messages on instagram. the building is a loss, but she's grateful everyone survived. here in the bay area, san jose police say they just

busted a romanian organized crime ring. these men were arrested on suspicion of robbery, armed carjacking, and theft. they were connected to 25 separate crimes. officers found $13,000 of cash and possible evidence of jewelry swap scams. european scientists say we just had the hottest october ever, and the year as a whole could break records too. warmer temperatures mean rising sea levels, and that's threatening a critical gateway to san francisco. devin fehely shows us there are big plans already underway to defend the water front. >> reporter: on the san francisco water front at the edge of pier 30 sits a little shack with with a big history. take a step inside red's java house.

>> fish and chips today, please. >> absolutely. >> reporter: for nearly 70 years, red's has served much of the same fare, including their famous cheddar cheese burgers on san francisco sour dough. that had anthony bourdain and vince shepherd gushing. >> it's a treasure. it's one of the best places in the city. can't beat the view on the patio. it's great to come before the giants' games. >> reporter: it sits at the top of san francisco bay, and due to its proximity to the piers, it was a hangout for people getting off the ships. >> they'd come to red's to eat. and the importance of it is we're still here today. everybody is welcome. we have anywhere from construction workers to people in suits and ties to families with their kids. everybody feels comfortable here. >> reporter: red's has survived a massive pier fire, the

earthquake, and most recently, the pandemic. but now a new culprit threatens its very existence. >> sea rise will definitely be an issue for red's java house because we're right on the water. >> reporter: the science is clear, more water is heading our way. as the earth heats up, glaciers are melting and oceans are expanding. by the end of the century, the sea levels will rise anywhere from three to seven feet in san francisco bay, possibly higher. >> we're already seeing flooding on the embarcadero. we know the bay is rising and will continue to rise. >> reporter: elaine forbes heads the port of san francisco and says the port is committed to planning for and adapting to the anticipated impacts of climate change. >> it will take a lot of ingenuity and tenacity to move from where we are today to where we need to be, but it's a problem we must solve. >> reporter: an urgent matter is the aging sea wall that holds downtown san francisco today and protects the city and

critical infrastructure from flooding. >> whether it be the bart train, the muni, the puc pipes, the electrical. it's all in the grid that hits the end of the urban edge, which is our shoreline and sea wall. >> reporter: the sea wall is vulnerable both to seismic and increasing flood risks. the port has prioritized several projects along the embarcadero that include efforts to strengthen the wall. these early projects focus on life safety and emergency responses. red's and its customers hope that their pier will soon be added to the list. >> they should definitely fix the sea wall, i hope, and keep red's here forever. >> we don't want to leave, and we don't plan on leaving. i do feel that we are going to be able to make it through, and we're going to be able to be able to continue to serve as long as we possibly can. >> reporter: because while san francisco history is hung on its walls, red's doesn't want to become history any time

soon. >> oh, paul. >> we're talking food because that story got us hungry. >> red's java house, got to love it. check this out, a pond in hawaii has curbed pink. possibly from the set of barbie. the water at a maui wildlife rescue has been bright pink since october 30th. scientists think that extreme drought is to blame for this by concentrating the amount of salt in the pond. it's twice as salty as sea water. perfect for a type of bacteria that thrives in salty conditions and turns water pink or red when it blooms. not as appetizing or fun as the kind of water that paul orders from red's. hint, hint, it's not water, and it comes in a bucket. >> it's mostly water. >> sudsy water. >> it's dad water. >> mom juice and dad water. great. >> it's the 11:00 show on a friday. but the weekend is

here. >> it is here. and we have rain to look forward to eventually, right? right, next week rain chances still all over the place. basically when it comes to describing the rain chance, i'm a human shrug emoji because the range of possibilities is vast. >> but don't you have all the answers all the time? >> i'd like to make you believe so. we'll own up to it when we don't. but i'm confident heading into the weekend we'll see the storm track stay well to our north. calm conditions this weekend. plenty of sunshine. just a few passing clouds from time to time. not putting much of a dent in solar generation. the numbers pretty consistent from today to tomorrow to sunday. let's take a look at futurecast, and we are going to see some cloud cover floating through from time to time. it's going to be way up in the atmosphere. those are clouds mostly made up of ice crystals with no shot of dropping precipitation on us. there's the rain showing up off the coast heading from late

sunday to sunday night and monday, but still staying off the coast by mid-morning monday. that's when things really become more problematic in terms of trying to pin down our rain chances. could be as early as monday night into tuesday. a lot of the forecast model data is zeroing in on late wednesday into wednesday night and thursday. but again, we can't say at any point there's a 100% chance of rain, it's just an unsettled pattern shaping up tuesday, wednesday, and thursday of next week. we're trying to fine tune the details. it's something we'll do throughout the weekend. usually within three to five days of a storm arriving, we're getting the details, but the forecast model data, some are saying less than a quarter inch of rain total next week. others are saying two to three inches of rain. so that's a wide range of what's possible with this particular system. again, hopefully we can narrow in on a solution as we head through the weekend. this is one that's going to have us pulling out our hair, not that i can really spare any. a live look outside

looking southeast. clear skies overhead right now. temperatures cooling down to the 40s in livermore and santa rosa. 50s everywhere else. and livermore and santa rosa, you'll be the cooler spots to start the day tomorrow, dropping down into the low 40s, near 40 degrees for some of the cooler spots. most of us in the middle portion of the 40s to begin the day. then a nice warm up in store. let's look at the high temperatures on saturday. we'll be about two to five degrees above average into the low 70s for most of the santa clara valley up to the mid-70s around morgan hill. low 70s inland and the east bay. bay side we're just short of 70 in fremont and oakland. along the coast, mid-60s at half moon bay, but that's normal for this time of year. upper 60s in san francisco. we'll take it. inland north bay similar to other inland temperatures across the bay area. similar readings on sunday. maybe a degree or so warmer. let's look at the seven-day forecast. you're going to notice the temperature trend that follows

along our rain chances, where the temperatures drop as the rain chances increase through next week. enjoy the warmth while it's here this weekend. the low 70s inland won't last too long, which they shouldn't. average highs this year is mid to upper 60s bay side and inland. temperatures are going to cool down as the rain arrives, or at least the rain chances arrive. can't guarantee anything at this point. along the coast, that's where temperatures are going to be coolest. enjoy the mid-60s this weekend. you'll be down to around 60 degrees by wednesday, thursday, and friday. we're being deliberately vague ask the rain chances tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. eventually one of those days will bring us a chance of more widespread and heavier rain. all right, paul, thank you. can you imagine the rock in the oval office? apparently he can. wow, i don't know what to say off of that. we have a 49ers injury report heading into the weekend. san francisco getting a little healthier off the bye. plus t giants are

pretty shot of the city skyline. another pretty shot behind me here. the first tahoe skiers of the season hit the slopes today at mount rose. even with just one lift open, it was enough to draw a crowd at the resort on the nevada side. the mountain got a few inches of snow on its own, but snow makers have been hard at work. skiers say the conditions today could not have been better. >> oh, man, it's been a great opening day. there's a lot of good snow up here. it's early in the season, and just good to be back up on the mountain. >> there was somebody that did

year in 2014. burrell played just two seasons in the bay, but he'll join as the co-hitting coach. there will be no excuse for the 49ers' offense on sunday against the jags as san francisco gets one of its top weapons back. debo samuel will return after missing two games with hairline shoulder fracture. the verdict is still out on trent williams. he's still real questionable. college football, big ten has banned the michigan head coach jim harbaugh from the sidelines of the team's next three games while the program is investigated for allegedly traveling to opponents' games to tape their signals. he can still coach the team during the week, but can't be at the game. and the school is seeking a court order to allow harbaugh to be on the sideline for saturday's game at penn state. to the nhl, sharks back at it against vegas looking for a
