jinping, on american soil. their first face-to-face in a year. and capitol craziness. the house passes a spending plan to keep the government running, but elsewhere tensions flare and fights erupt. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israel's military is urging hamas to surrender this morning after launching a targeted operation in part of gaza's largest hospital. the raid comes after u.s. intelligence confirmed what israel has been saying -- that hamas and other terror groups have been using tunnels under hospitals to hide themselves, store weapons, and hold hostages. also israel says that it has agreed to allow some fuel shipments into the gaza strip for humanitarian purposes. families of the hostages kicked off a five-day protest march from tel aviv to jerusalem to demand the government do more to secure their release. cbs' doug williams joins us from tel aviv with the latest. doug, good morning.

>> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the israelis continue to say they have success in their targeted operations on hamas control centers in gaza city. and with the u.s. now confirming hamas' use of hospitals, it's an encouraging 24 hours for israeli forces, but along with it a reminder of the costs of this war. israel defense forces say they're carrying out a precise and targeted operation against hamas in specific parts of gaza city's al shifa hospital. the operation comes as the white house is now backing the idf's claims that hamas and islamic jihadists have used tunnels under hospitals in gaza including al shifa to support military operations and conceal hostages with the u.s. government calling it a war crime. however, the biden administration says it does not want to see strikes on hospitals. >> we do not want to see a fire fight in a conflict where there are innocent civilians.

>> reporter: the health sector pushed to the point of collapse with one functioning hospital remaining in northern gaza. yesterday president biden spoke again with israeli prime mnister benjamin netanyahu on the latest in the conflict and efforts to release some of the 200-plus hostages believed to be held by hamas including several americans. >> talking with the people about every single day, i believe it's going to happen. but i don't want to get into any detail. >> reporter: and israel's military says they've confirmed that one hostage held by hamas, 19-year-old israeli soldier noa marciano, was killed. hamas releasing a video claiming that she was killed by israeli air strikes, claims we have not been able to verify. and another heartbreaking development, in an interview with nbc news, the aunt of 3-year-old hamas hostage abigail idan says abigail's parents were killed in their kibbutz while she was in their arms. her aunt says abigail crawled in

a neighbor's shelter for safety before she and the neighbor's family were discovered and taken away by hamas militants. anne-marie? >> just terrible news. doug, thank you so much. back here at home, a huge show of solidarity as a crowd of nearly 300,000 packed the national mall in washington for the march for israel. busloads of people came from across the country. cbs' natalie brand was there. ♪ >> reporter: tens of thousands descended on the national mall in a march for israel against anti-semitism. >> since october 7th, there has been literally an explosion of violence against jewish people. >> we are here united, democrat and republican, house and senate, to say we stand with israel. [ cheers ] >> reporter: speakers included lawmakers and family members of the hostages still being held in gaza. [ chants ] organizers and the families

called for their safe release. >> bring all of the hostages home now! [ cheers ] >> reporter: the demonstration brought groups from synagogues and jewish organizations from as far as california. >> i think that the impact of this march will be heard across the entire nation. >> reporter: the department of homeland security designated the highest level of security possible for this demonstration. dhs says since the start of the israel-hamas war there has been an increase in reports of threats against jewish, arab american, and muslim communities. >> indian, palestinians should also understand it's a fight for them, as well. >> reporter: israeli president isaac herzog also took part with a live message from the western wall in jerusalem. >> we, the people of israel, are eternal and no one will break us. >> reporter: organizers say they want to show the world that jewish communities should be able to live without terrorism

and free of hate. natalie brand, cbs news, washington. president biden is set to meet today with chinese president xi jinping outside san francisco. the two leaders arrived separately yesterday where they were greeted by california governor gavin newsom. they are both attending the summit of asia-pacific leaders. it is the first time they've met in a year. mr. biden said his goal is to get the u.s.-china relationship on a, quote, normal course. and back in washington, the senate is is expected to take up the house's short-term spending bill today to avoid a government shutdown. the measure passed in a rare display of bipartisanship but not without some drama as one of the most exclusive clubs almost became a fight club. the story from cbs' scott macfarlane. >> reporter: congress' gridlock nearly turned into a headlock. >> you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults, we can finish it here. >> reporter: oklahoma republican senator markwayne mullin, a former mixed martial arts fighter, challenged teamsters

attorney jenna ellis said a top white house aide told her in 2020 that then-president trump did not plan to leave office under any circumstances. a former fundraiser for new york republican congressman george santos pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud charge. sam miele admitted to impersonating a high-ranking congressional aide while trying to raise money for santos. prosecutors also said he stole about $100,000 through unauthorized credit card charges in order to send money to political campaigns and for his own personal use. he faces more than two years in prison. the man accused of attacking former house speaker nancy pelosi's husband with a hammer apologized in court. david depape is accused of breaking into the couple's san francisco home last year and seriously wounding paul pelosi. in tearful testimony yesterday, depape said he was influenced by right-wing conspiracy theories. he said that he went to the couple's home as part of a bigger plot to end what he thought was government

"the columbus dispatch" reports six people were killed in a fiery crash in ohio. authorities say a charter bus carrying 54 high school students and chaperones was rear-ended by a semi-truck yesterday. five vehicles were involved in that accident. the bus was carrying a high school marching band on their way to perform at a conference in columbus. three students on the bus were killed. three adults in a vehicle accompanying the students were also killed. 18 others were injured. "the las vegas review" says eight high school students were

arrested in the beating deaths -- death of a classmates. the students between the ages of 13 and 17 ere arrested on suspicion of murder. investigators are trying to identify two other students involved. 17-year-old jonathan lewis jr. died a week after he was badly beaten in a fight earlier this month. police say the fight was over a pair of wireless headphones and a vape pen stolen from the victim's friend. and the bbc says police in england arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of an american hockey player. adam johnson died after his neck was cut by an opponent's skate during a game in england last month. police did not identify the suspect who was arrested. the player whose skate cut johnson was matt petgrave. johnson played briefly for the pittsburgh penguins several years ago. still to come, how a horse got loose on a plane. and we'll show you the new floats that will be starring in this year's macy's thanksgiving day parade. rade.

nasdaq was 326, and the s&p 500 rose 84 points. labor department data showed inflation eased in october compared to september. a possible sign the fed's aggressive interest rate hikes are working. the cost of gas, appliances, cars, all down, but rent and health care costs continue to rise. analysts aren't anticipated -- anticipating another round of racist hikes in the near future but say the central bank will likely keep rates high for now. youtube has some new rules for using a.i. the platform says creators will have to reveal whether they're using generative artificial intelligence to make realistic looking videos. record labels will also be able to request music be taken down that mimics the artists' voice. the changes will take effect next year. starting today alcohol will be more expensive on flights with southwest airlines. liquor and wine go up by $2, beer up by $1. southwest says this is the first hike on booze since 2018. nonalcoholic beverages, though, will remain complimentary.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ we are a cargo plane. we have live animal -- horse -- on board the airplane, and the horse managed to escape its stall. >> yeah, we've heard all kinds of stories about unruly passengers, but this one tops the bill. you heard that air traffic call, right? a horse got loose on a plane last week. the cargo jet heading to belgium was able to safely return to new york's kennedy after dumping about 20 tons of fuel over the atlantic. after releasing a dire federal climate report, president biden announced $6 billion will go toward helping the u.s. fight the impact of climate change. the first national climate assessment in five years found far reaching and worsening conditions.
