what the two leaders agreed to do going forward. and shutdown averted. for now. the senate approves a temporary funding measure to keep the government running through the holidays. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with a breaking new development in the israel-hamas war. new video in overnight from the idf shows what they say are fighter jets striking the gaza home -- the gaza home of hamas' political leader ismail haniyah. israel says the terror group was using the home to direct attacks. haniyah currently lives in qatar. israel's military is also showing off a stockpile of weapons they say they found after carrying out a targeted operation inside the besieged al shifa hospital in gaza city. and the u.n. security council voted in favor of a resolution calling for pauses in the fighting to allow for humanitarian aid, and it is calling for the unconditional

release of hostages. cbs' doug williams is in tel aviv for us with more on this this morning. we're also getting word of an attack at an israeli checkpoint. >> reporter: israeli media reporting moments ago of violence on the ground in jerusalem. the israelis say a terrorist opened fire at a checkpoint, five were injured, one critically. and they say the shooter was neutralized. this comes as you mentioned a day after the focused ground invasion of gaza's largest hospital by israeli troops as the hostage negotiations continue. >> we get some light over here. >> reporter: israel's military released this video claiming to show weapons belonging to hamas militants inside al shifa hospital in gaza city. >> what we have found, i think, is only the tip of the iceberg. >> reporter: defense forces say they are still operating inside gaza city's largest hospital after launching what they called a precise and targeted operation there yesterday. >> hospitals are not

battlegrounds. >> reporter: the head of the world health organization said the operation was totally unacceptable. president biden told reporters he and israeli leaders discussed the need to be cautious, given the delicate nature of the operation. >> israel did not go in with large number of troops, did not raid, did not rush anything down. >> reporter: the president said he told israel's government it would be a mistake to occupy gaza. though the conflict has progressed and grown since the israelis are still compiling cars from what they say are from the october 7th attacks, most of these cars are from the nova music festival. >> i have friends and family that were killed on that day. we're doing our best to find the people that are responsible. >> reporter: more than 200 hostages are still believed to be held by hamas since those deadly raids. >> i'm working on how i can be helpful in getting hostages released. >> reporter: in tel aviv, demonstrators marched to demand a deal to free the hostages. in washington, d.c., protesters

calling for a cease-fire clashed with police. and in regard to al shifa, the hamas-run health ministry pushing back this morning telling us the americans and israelis are promoting and covering up war crimes at al shifa hospital. they deny the existence of any control center below it and accuse the israelis of using hospital staff and civilians as human shields, which we heard before from the other side. it is another example this morning of the ongoing information war in addition to the war on the ground. anne-marie? >> indeed. doug williams in tel aviv, thank you so much, doug. now to the high stakes summit between president biden and china's president xi jinping. their first face to face meeting in a year. both leaders vow to stabilize their relationship and agree to combat illegal fentanyl and re-establish military communications. the story now from cbs' skyler henry. >> reporter: at the start of about 4 hours of high stakes discussions, president biden and china's leader exchanged a warm handshake.

but the talks come amid hand wringing over growing tensions between washington and beijing on wide ranging issues. >> we'll continue to compete vigorously with the prc, but we'll manage that competition responsibly so it doesn't veer into conflict or accidental conflict. >> reporter: meeting near san francisco on the sidelines of the apec conference, the white house has been hoping biden's first face to face talks with xi jinping in a year would bring progress. on the fentanyl crisis sweeping the u.s., a plan emerged for china to ramp up efforts to go after companies that make precursor chemicals for fentanyl. >> it is going to save lives and i appreciate president xi's commitment on this issue. >> reporter: china and the u.s. have also been at increasing odds over trade. human rights, the sovereignty of taiwan, wars in ukraine and now gaza. >> i think it is going to stop when the -- when hamas no longer maintains the capacity to murder

and abuse and just do horrific things to the israelis. >> reporter: on another front, china agreed to several steps in hopes of finding ways to address frayed military communications between the two superpowers. especially important after dozens of reports of unsafe incidents involving chinese aircraft and u.s. military planes. >> that's how accidents happen. misunderstandings. so we're back to direct open, clear direct communications on a direct basis. >> reporter: earlier wednesday, president xi said the relationship between the countries has never been smooth sailing, but turning their backs is not an option. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. breaking overnight, the threat of a partial government shutdown is over. at least for now. the senate overwhelmingly passed a temporary funding package and sent it to president biden for his signature. cbs' shanelle kaul is following the late developments and joins

us now from new york. good morning, shanelle. >> good morning, anne-marie. it was down to the wire here, but congress green lit this temporary plan wednesday night, pushing a brewing battle over the federal budget into the new year. >> the 60 vote threshold having been achieved, the bill is passed. >> reporter: just days shy of a friday night deadline, congress managed to avert a government shutdown. >> mission accomplished. >> reporter: the two-step stopgap measure was supported by all but one democrat and ten republicans in the senate wednesday night. >> ayes are 87, the nays are 11. >> reporter: ensuring temporary funding would continue through the holidays. >> a great outcome for the american people. >> reporter: the package sees government funding remain at current levels for roughly two more months, with agencies including transportation, housing and energy financed through january 19th, and other departments like defense and homeland security through february 2nd.

the move buys the house and senate more time to overcome their differences on future spending. >> today's cr is a very good step, good omen for the future. i hope we see more bipartisanship down the line. >> reporter: the plan does not include the white house's nearly $106 billion request for aid to ukraine and israel, something democratic lawmakers will likely negotiate after their upcoming recess. >> i don't want to see billions of dollars sent to ukraine in a war that needs to end. >> reporter: while house gop members plan to push for immigration and border legislation. the temporary spending bill now heads to president biden's desk to be signed into law. and newly elected house speaker mike johnson, who proposed this plan, has promised not to support more stopgap funding measures in the future, laying the groundwork for confrontations over the nation's budget between the house and the senate next year. anne-marie. >> shanelle kaul in new york, thank you, shanelle.

paradise island headed to the popular tourist destination blue lagoon island. people on board jumped into the water and swam towards nearby boats. >> one of the crew members that was downstairs ran upstairs and was crying, freaking out. >> it is not clear how the american woman died. an investigation is under way to determine why the boat sank. and the wife of an accused serial killer showed up in court. and there is an update in the investigation into a deadly beating. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the las vegas review" reports police released video of two persons of interest that they're looking for in the beating death of a vegas high school student. it shows grainy still photos of two teenagers apparently taken from a video on social media of the beating. 17-year-old jonathan lewis jr. died after the attack. eight other students have been arrested. police say the fight was over a pair of headphones and a vape pen. "the new york post" says a

media circus erupted as gilgo beach serial killer suspect rex heuermann's estranged wife showed up at court for the first time. asa ellerup arrived at the courthouse on long island yestrday, flanked by her legal team. she filed for divorce and is selling her story for a documentary. heuermann pleaded not guilty to the murders of three women. he's also the prime suspect in the death of another woman. and "the new york times" says the house ethics committee will not push to expel new york republican congressman george santos after a nearly nine-month investigation. the committee chair said the panel will leave santos' fate in the hands of other house members. the committee's findings could be released as early as today. it has been investigating alleged criminal and ethical violations committed by santos. he's pleaded not guilty to almost two dozen criminal charges. still to come, caught on camera, a dangerous rock slide rains down on a hiking trail at

the dow jumped 163 points. the nasdaq up 9. the s&p 500 climbed 7 points. the contract deal to end the autoworkers strike is getting some pushback. a significant number of union workers at several large general motors factories have voted against the deal. according to a local union president in texas, a lot of long time employees didn't think the immediate pay raise was enough to make up for the things they gave up to keep gm afloat in 2008. voting continues and final tallies are expected later today. meanwhile, early vote totals show ford and stellantis workers are getting behind their contracts. thousands of starbucks union workers are planning to walk out today on the company's annual red cup day, that's when starbucks gives out free re-useable holiday cups with the purchase of a holiday drink. the union says they want starbucks to negotiate over staffing concerns and demand it turn off mobile ordering during
