largest hospital for evidence. what the idf says it has found inside and underneath. hate on campus. the federal government launching investigations into seven schools amid a rising number of anti-semitic and islamophobic cases. a scathing report. the house ethics committee finding substantial evidence that embattled congressman george santos used campaign funds for his own personal expenses. his response as the calls grow louder for him to resign. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israeli leaders say they're closer than ever before on a possible deal to free some of the 200 plus hostages taken by hamas nearly six weeks ago. this as israeli forces continue to scour gaza's al shifa hospital for evidence of hamas' command center. they released new images of a tunnel dug on hospital grounds. also two tragic discoveries,

israel says it recovered the bodies of a 19-year-old soldier and a 65-year-old woman in a building adjacent to the hospital. both had been taken hostage. and israel has signaled its offensive against hamas could next target the south, where most of the population is already taken refuge. cbs' doug williams joins us from tel aviv. doug, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. as the israelis say they continue to take control of more hamas strongholds in northern gaza, the situation growing more dire each day for palestinian civilians that remain. cbs news got word last night that gaza's only operational hospital was surrounded by idf forces and out of medication and supplies as the israelis search for hostages continue. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu telling cbs evening news that hostages taken by hamas may have previously been held in gaza's al shifa hospital. >> we had strong indications

that they were held in the shifa hospital, one of the reasons we entered the hospital. >> reporter: israeli defense forces say the bodies of two hostages, 65-year-old grandmother judith weiss and 19-year-old soldier noa marciano were found near the hospital. this comes as cbs news has learned that israel is considering a deal that would see hamas free a number of women and children held hostage in exchange for a three to five-day cease-fire and the possibility of the release of palestinian women and children from israeli prisons. >> we'll have a temporary cease-fire. if we can get our hostages back. >> reporter: israel's military entered al shifa hospital this week. and yesterday released video showing what they say is tunnel infrastructure and a hamas vehicle full of weapons in the hospital. hamas has denied claims that it operates from gaza's hospitals and prime minister netanyahu told cbs news he believes hamas militants fled al shifa hospital as israeli forces approached. israel's defense forces also posted images of more weapons

said to be found inside the al quds hospital. meanwhile, people run through the streets of jenin to escape the blasts in the west bank, where according to reports israeli forces killed at least five palestinians in clashes last night. of the two hostages whose bodies were recently discovered near al shifa hospital, the 19-year-old soldier will be laid to rest today. the 65-year-old grandmother, judith weiss, was undergoing treatment for breast cancer and israeli advocacy group for the hostages and families says had she gotten the treatment she needed, she was expected to recover. anne-marie. >> just so incredibly heart breaking, doug. thank you, doug williams in tel aviv. well, the biden administration is launching an investigation into schools over alleged incidents of anti-semitism and islamophobia. tensions have increased on campuses across the country in the wake of the israel-hamas war. the department of education released a list of seven schools

being investigated for alleged civil rights violations, and they include columbia, cornell and the university of pennsylvania. they could lose federal funding. breaking overnight, president biden signed a temporary spending bill that will avoid a potential government shutdown until at least the new year. the president signed the bill while in san francisco for the apec summit. and the bill keeps government funding at current levels for two more months. it will give lawmakers more time to try and work out a long-term budget. new york republican congressman george santos says he will not run for re-election after a scathing house ethics report was released. the report said there was, quote, overwhelming evidence that santos broke the law. the committee referred its findings to the justice department. it said santos deceived donors and stole money from his campaign. santos is accused of using some of that money on botox treatments, luxury shopping sprees at hermes and ferragamo,

trips to atlantic city and the hamptons and a subscription to the adult website onlyfans. >> the report was devastating. he had no choice. he can't run. if he was smart, he would resign from congress and work out a deal with the justice department, plead guilty. he's finished. he's dead man walking. >> should have been a special election a long time ago. i think the pressure is on. the evidence has become abundantly clear. and it would be very hard for the republicans to keep him in congress without looking as guilty as he is. >> there are renewed calls to expel santos from congress in the wake of the report. the house could vote on that when members return from the thanksgiving break. santos, who has pleaded not guilty to almost two dozen criminal charges, called the report a disgusting politicized smear. a mistrial was declared in the federal civil rights trial of a former louisville police officer in the death of breonna taylor. a judge declared the mistrial yesterday after the jury could not reach a verdict. former officer brett hankison

fired ten shots into her window and glass door after officers came under fire during a botched drug raid in 2020. none of his shots hit anyone, but prosecutors said he violated the rights of taylor and others. another officer fired the shot that killed taylor. a lawyer representing taylor's mother spoke after the mistrial was declared. >> of course miss palmer was disappointed. but still encouraged because we, you know, a mistrial is not an acquittal. and so we live another day to fight for justice for breonna. >> there could be a retrial in the case. a federal jury convicted the man who broke into nancy pelosi's san francisco home and attacked her husband with a hammer. david depape was found guilty yesterday of attempting to kidnap pelosi, who wasn't home, and assaulting her husband. paul, her husband paul, rather. depape said he was influenced by right wing conspiracy theories. he faces up to 50 years in prison.

he's also awaiting trial on state charges. rapper sean "diddy" combs is facing accusations of rape and abuse. singer cassandra ventura filed a federal lawsuit claiming combs raped, beat and forced her to have sex with other men during their years long relationship. combs' attorney said it was blackmail. he said combs vehemently denies the allegations. thousands of people around the world voluntarily slept on the streets last night in an effort to raise awareness about youth homelessness. it is part of a global initiative by covenant house, which, for the first time, hosted a campout in the heart of new york city. cbs' shanelle kaul is here with the details on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. three city blocks of new york's times square has been completely shut down for this event overnight. it is a spectacular show of compassion, solidarity, and activism. there was a sea of sleeping bags

under manhattan's brightest lights. >> we're coming out to actually give back. >> reporter: overnight, more than 400 people camped out in the cold. >> it is a good experience for us to realize that a simple bed that we take for granted, people are wishing they just had that. >> reporter: the event put on by nonprofit covenant house aims to raise awareness about youth homelessness here -- >> getting a taste of what it is like. >> reporter: -- and across the country. >> we're not trying to pretend like we're homeless. we want people to know one in ten young people is going to experience homelessness this year and there is something we can do about it. >> reporter: it is an issue which impacts more than 4 million american youth each year. >> essentially people have been cast away by their family or lost their family and have nowhere to go. and, you know, life threw them a curveball. >> reporter: of the hundreds of people spending the night at new york's times square, there are both supporters and survivors. >> we grew up right here. we lived in these streets.

"the los angeles times" reports a california college professor was arrested in connection with the death of a jewish protester. loay abdelfattah alnaji was charged with involuntary manslaughter and battery in the death of paul kessler. authorities say kessler suffered head injuries when he fell backwards and hit his head on the ground during an altercation

with alnaji. it happened when pro-palestinian and pro-israel demonstrators clashed earlier this month. "the chicago tribune" says the city commuter train crashed into a snowplow on the same track sending two dozen people to the hospital. officials say the yellow line train came around the curve yesterday, when it hit a slower moving snow removal train that was doing scheduled training. 38 people were injured including 3 in critical condition. "the orlando sentinel" says the u.s. supreme court will not allow florida to enforce a new law targeting drag shows, while a court case continues. the law, backed by governor ron desantis, punished venues that allowed children into what it called adult live performances. an orlando restaurant found a lawsuit claiming it was unconstitutional. lower courts prohibited it from being enforced. but the state asked the supreme court to allow it to go into effect everywhere, except at that one restaurant.

"moneywatch." >> u.s. stocks floated to a mixed finish thursday. the dow fell 45 points. the nasdaq, though, rose 9 and the s&p 500 was up 5. tiktok is cracking down on videos promoting a 2002 letter by osama bin laden claiming to justify the terror attacks on 9/11. over the past few days, that letter has gone viral, with some people saying it changed their perspective on u.s. foreign policy amid the israel-hamas war. tiktok says the content violates its rules on supporting terrorism and it is aggressively removing posts and investigating how they got on the platform. x, formerly known as twitter, is doing damage control after owner elon musk appeared to endorse a post accusing jewish groups of, quote, hatred against whites, writing, quote, it was the actual truth. ibm paused its advertising after the ceo, linda yaccarino, posted the platform has been, quote,
