>> i do this because my son doesn't believe i had a show. >> all right. come over back here, friendo. dad his warm stomping grounds. a warm welcome from the audience and his latest successor. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with another day of heavy fighting near another hospital in northern gaza as israel's military expands its ground assault, this as negotiators are closing in on a deal to release some of the hostages in exchange for a pause in fighting. the israeli army released new video of what they describe as a weapons lab under the gaza hospital. and more than 1,200 americans and family members are asking for help to leave gaza. cbs's shanelle kaul is joining us from new york. hey, shanelle, good morning. >> multiple sources tell cbs

news an initial 50 civilians could be released by hamas. in exchange, there would be an exchange for fuel and a pause in fighting. >> reporter: this morning there is optimism that a potential deal between israel and hamas to free some of the hostages is imminent. >> mr. president biden, is a hostage deal in the future? >> i believe so. >> reporter: according to hamas officials a possible agreement could be brought by qatar, which has been leading negotiations along with u.s. involvement. cbs's holly williams discussed a potential deal with one official. >> the deal is to negotiate a swap of 50 civilian hostages for 100 palestinian prisoners and a

five-day cease-fire. >> yes. >> reporter: yesterday they met with the cabinet. they say officials were tight-lipped about the negotiations. >> they kept expressing they wish they could tell us. i felt they were being honest about it. >> reporter: heavy fighting continues in northern gaza with israeli forces now surrounding the indonesian hospital. it comes days after israeli fighters enter the territory's largest hospital, al shifa. dozens of premature babies from that hospital have now been evacuated to egypt for medical care. >> they've got a long way to go. >> reporter: and in the u.s., the state department confirms at least six americans, five idf soldiers, and one border police officer have died in the fighting following the october 7th attacks. our sources say these are very difficult talks and there is still no firm deal. a written draft agreement is being passed back and forth between the parties, but this could, anne-marie, signal the potential for more civilian hostages to be released. >> well, you flow know, we'll

take any little bit of good news, shanelle. thank you very much. well, breaking overnight, a shooter opened fire inside a walmart in ohio, wounding four people before killing himself. police in the town of beavercreek just outside of dayton said the gunman walked into the store last night and began shooting. the wounded were rushed to area hospitals. their conditions are unknown at this time, and no word yet on a possible motive for the attack. and now to the holiday travel rush kicking into high gear, but severe weather could cause chaos at airports and on the roads. aaa estimates a mere number of americans, 55 million, will travel 50 miles or more from their home with the majority driving to their destinations. a major storm is moving across the country, and it could bring travel troubles from the deep south up to the northeast. soaking rain and gusty winds will extend into the mid-atlantic and northeast while wintry weather will hammer parts

watching. kris van cleave, cbs news. the federal court has ruled on monday that private individuals and civilian rights groups do not have the ability to sue under a key provision of the 1965 law. the ruling finds only the u.s. justice didn't could bring legal challenges. an appeal is expected to end up before the supreme court. and donald trump is facing another possible gag order. a federal appeals court in washington is deciding whether to reimpose restrictions on his speech in his election interference case there. the judges heard arguments yesterday and say they are trying to craft a gag order that does not infringe on his free speech rights. >> growing turmoil in the tech world. billionaire elon musk facing backlash over anti-semitic social media posts, he's now suing media matters, which is a liberal watchdog group accusing it of trying to drove away

advertisers, this as there's an all-open vote after the ouster of its ceo. cbs's jo ling kent reports. >> reporter: nearly every employee has threatened to resign over the firing of sam altman who was ousted by the board last friday and quickly hired by microsoft. now more than 700 employees say they're ready to follow him there, signing this letter, which states we are unable to work for or with people who lack confidence, judgment, and care for our mission and employees. the board of directors said altman was not consistently candid in his communications. >> if you're interested in the united states, continuing to be a leader in this technology, in artificial intelligence, you might be a little troubled by this type of chaos. >> reporter: this as another tech titan is facing blowback. elon musk continues to defend himself after agreeing with an anti-semitic post claiming jewish communities are spreading hatred against whites.

from chest congestion and any type of cough, day or night. mucinex dm. it's comeback season. well, all nine people who overshot a runway have survived. the plane ended up in a bay yesterday. military officials say it happened at a marine corps base near oahu. everyone was able to make it back to safety, though, on shore, and they weren't hurt. the plane had been flying a routine training mission. while lawmakers in florida tour the site of a florida shooting and derek chauvin loses his appeal. those are some of the latest stories on the morning newsstand. the hill reports the supreme court has declined to review derek chauvin's murder conviction in the killing of george floyd. the former minneapolis police officer asked to have the supreme court hear his case.

floyd's death sparked worldwide protests in 2020. chauvin is now serving a 22.5-year sentence. the south florida "sun sentinel" says lawmakers toured marjory stoneman douglas high school, the site of a mass shooting. the building is now vacant where 17 people were killed. the tour was to push for safety school legislation and they reported seeing broken glass and bloodstains, and they also had a closed door roundtable discussion with relatives of parkland victims. the building is scheduled to be demolished next summer. and the "los angeles daily news" reports that a$ap rocky is headed to trial on gun charges. the 35-year-old is accused of firing a gun at a former friend outside a hollywood hotel in 2021. a judge rules there is enough evidence for him to stand trial. the two-time grammy nominee has pleaded not guilty to two felony charges. well, still to come, kid hero. what a florida boy did to save
