. from cbs news bay area this is the afternoon edition. it is thanksgiving week. with a turkey and trimmings also comes the stress. >> inflation is an insane stressor. everything is way more expensive. >> a lot of negativity going around. not just today but all around. >> how to get through it. if your holiday involves getting out of time you are not alone. did you take them out of school early? >> yes. the struggle between the luggage and the legistics of people traveling with kids. thank you for joining us. today, we are focusing on health as we kick off the holiday season. looking at ways to keep the stress in check for your family, yourself, as you travel and gather with loved ones. first of all, let's get

you caught up on today's headlines. two arrests in the shooting death of a mother while she was sleeping in her home. it happened on september 15th a stray bullet went into the home on 38 boulevard killing the 41-year-old. the suspects were targeting a person in a car. they are looking for the other people who may be connected to this case. also in oakland, a fire ripped through a restaurant. along mandela parkway. our chopper shows the aftermath. you see the restaurant is charred. fire investigation is under. way. no reports of injuries. ending her three decade career at the end of her term as she was elected to the house of representatives back in 1992

after serving on san mateo board of supervisors for a decade. the district covers santa clara county and san mateo county. and this week, looking to give hundreds of families a holiday meal. 200 volunteers are part of the food distribution. people will receive turkey and other staples ahead of thanksgiving. they are seeing a 30% increase in the demand. all compared to previous years also dealing with a drop in donations. cbs news bay area is teaming up with food banks to help. you can learn how to donate food and money and volunteer your time. you can use the qr code at the bottom of your screen. we will have the graphic here or head to our website at kpix.com/give. first alert weather. tracking conditions as we move closer to thanksgiving. here is our meteorologist darren peck with the thanksgiving forecast >> it is a good one. we will start out with today. high clouds onut there today. day

time highs that are up in the middle 60s. look at what happens over the next few days. we will warp up. using san jose for the example for the 4-day weekend. these numbers apply to just about all of the inland parts of the entire bay. san francisco and the peninsula you might not make it to 72 on thursday, settling for upper 60s. in general, that story, relatively warm thanksgiving day and then noticeably cooler after that as we head towards the rest of the four day holiday weekend. that covers the four days, let's take a look at the seven-day forecast. for that we will take in the wide view. start out with the microclimate to see what it looks like. we gotten through the sunday time frame, look at monday, tuesday, does not change. in fact, in the long-range forecast all of the sunniness and lack of rain is sticking around. not only through the holiday weekend but through the end of the month as we look at the long-range forecast. we don't see the possibility for rain to come

back to the bay at all. what it does do, though, sets us up for a really nice holiday weekend. so, if you have to travel in or out of the bay no concerns, best of all, if you have friends or family coming to visit you those are the four days where you get to show off where you live. ryan, back to you. >> thank you. darren. no weather problems around the bay area if you are flying out for thanksgiving. airports will get busier for the busy travel week of the year. they expect a record number of passengers during the thanksgiving travel rush. nearly 30 million of them. the surge in holiday flights peaking at nearly 50,000 scheduled departures, that is just tomorrow because of so many flights the faa decided to open airspace along the east coast. thereat is usually reserved for the military all to ease congestion. the next busiest day to fly, of course, is the sunday after thanksgiving that is when everybody is coming home. the roads will be busy, too. triple-a the third busiest

travel season with most americans planning drive with their destinations between tomorrow and sunday. traveling during the holidays can be challenging enough. traveling with the kids that can be even tougher. joining me now is child-mind institute. cheryl, the luggage, the legistics, getting your tickets, getting through tsa, a lot of families dealing with everything how do you help kids go through the process? and the more control you can give your kids the better. so, some things that might be helpful are, there are airports that allow you to do a trial run and check out the airport beforehand and go through the process. i believe some of the airports in the local bay area can do that. check with your local airport. see if you can do a walk

through with your kid and see what you can expect and give them the time. again, you want to be able to control what you can here, give yourself time to get through the lines. if you are able to sign up for something like tsa precheck or something that can get you through the lines faster we definitely recommend that. >> i tell my friends get tsa precheck. it is a lifesaver. >> yes, i recently got it. a complete game changer. >> some travelers may have disabilities that we can not see. perhaps mental health challenges, how can families make the process smoother for them? >> there are a few different things you can do. in addition to helping your kids involving them in as much of the process as possible, helping them pack or allowing them to help pack, allowing them to help make the decisions if they are able to that can be helpful. when you present decisions to kids, kids

can be, any of us can become overwhelmed when there are too many options. if you can limit the options beforehand, that is great. deciding on a snack. do you want this or that. you are structuring what, what they have to think about in a way. the great thing is that some airports are actually getting more on board with being able to help families or being able to identify people who may have additional difficulties so there is san jose airport there is the sun flower laniard and it is something that if your child has anxiety or sensory issues they can wear the laniard, everyone at the airport knows there is someone who might need a little extra help and support. it is not obviously not something that everyone knows what is going on. it would be lovely if everyone had compassion this

can be an extra signal that can alert the staff to help you when you might need help. the other thing i want to mention is there a lot of focus on what to do to help our kids, you know, packing a bag with some of their favorite snacks, toys, those are helpful, too, but also we should be thinking about what we can do as parents. we probably all had the experience of dealing with some sort of employer, someone who was maybe having a bad day and we are feeling their anxiety and it is making us more anxious. so for parents the more you can have a plan for yourself to keep yourself calm, remember what is within your control. and be able to talk to your kid and manage situations in as calm of a way as possible that has a huge effect on keeping our kids calm as well. they really can sense our emotions, they read what we are not saying and so it is important to also be able to regulate ourselves. >> self-care is so important. >> absolutely. >> and so also if you are

. . it is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. a new survey finds americans are feeling more stress than usual this holiday season. a survey by ohio state, university medical center, 81% cited national issues as a reason for their stress. surprising holiday spending, 53% are stressed by illnesses and even the memory of last year's travel meltdown. you all remember that weighing in on some people. what should you do? experts say focus on what you can control and make time during this busy season to recharge and connect with family and friends, also in the season of expectation they are reminding us, everything does not have to be perfect. >> take a deep breath, drop

your shoulders, be present. your loved ones will enjoy being with you just because it is you. >> if you are concerned about your diet or fitness goals over the holiday season she suggests building in time for a family hike or movement you can do all together. for some people, unwinding involves a glass of wine. but, red wine in particular can have unpleasant aftereffects like headaches, and now northern researchers what. thank you very much for joining us. >> reporter: any specialist the head from red wine does not happen to everybody. it is significant. it can hurt, bring nausea with it. i wondered what caused it for many years. in fact, it is a century's old

mystery. but, my co-researcher think we have come up with the main culprit. it is an ingredient in red wine. it is found in other wines as well. white wine has far less and so do other natural foods. >> there are some people who are more sensitive to red wine than other people? >> reporter: yes. definitely. it is a question about how we can identify those. not everyone as you say gets a red wine headache. i notice that the people who have under lining headquarter conditions like migraines are particularly prone to red wine headaches. of course there are some people who have genetically different enzyme systems in their bodies and genetically different tendencies to have red wine headaches. but it is still another mystery as to why people get red wine headaches and others just don't >> does it make a difference

what kind of red wine you are drinking say, a difference between them? >> we think so. but that is what our next studies are supposed to help us understand. we think that there are wines now, perhaps the ones with lower alcohol content, perhaps the ones with fewer , white wines have less agencies in them. one thing we are hoping to find is guidance for people in terms of selecting their wines. we are hoping that we might be able to help wine makers produce fewer of the agents in them. that will all be interesting and helpful to a lot of people. what i am interesting even more significantly in right now is that maybe we can learn a little more about the way headaches for example migraines are produced based on the

results of the study. help the brood population of headaches. >> so, still a lot of red wine drinkers that would want to maybe have a glass and celebrate during the holidays. is there a way to prevent the head wine headaches outside of just not drinking? >> i think quantity is significant. i think perhaps making sure that they are having a healthy lifestyle in other ways, making sure they are well hydrated so metabolism is good in general. it is a bit of a risk. if you are prone to red wine headache to sample a red wine. even small quantities can bring it on. >> well, moderation is always key. that is good advise during the holidays. a lot of us like to drink, maybe just a little too much. thank you very much. >> thank you glad to be here. still ahead, the impact of sleep and movement on pregnancy. how bay area researchers say it can impact

. we all know sleep and movement are important for our health. now, a stanford study of pregnant woman look at how those things are linked to the risk of premature birth. joining me now is an associateiat associate professor. thank you for joining us. can you tell us first about the highlights of the study and the use of wearables? >> my pleasure, thank you for having me. in collaboration with our colleagues we put variable devices on about 1,000 pregnant woman and tracked their physical activity and sleep during pregnancy. we

showed by feeding all of this data into an artificial intelligence app we were able to tell how pregnant somebody is by looking at the variable device data alone. then in addition to that we showed that when a pregnant woman's physical activity or sleep drifts off from that normal trajectory we would expect that pregnancy may be associated with adverse outcomes >> so how can this information help reduce preterm births? >> the preterm birth is the single largest cause of mortality in children under 5 years of age. this is just the first step for us to understand the causes of it. if we show that physical activity and sleep in a clausal manner will be able to deploy potentially smart watch apps to guide woman through pregnancy to make sure they have the appropriate levels of physical activity and sleep quality is high to give

them the highest chance of success. >> were you surprised by the results of success? sleep and movement are important for almost everyone, right? >> they are important for almost everyone. some aspects of this are potentially exciting for example when a woman is considered high risk sometimes we tell them to stay in bed as much as they can during pregnancy. now, this is not medical advise on all pregnant woman follow the advice of their doctors but it provides exciting new opportunities that may allow us to revise some of our knowledge around how physical activity in the pregnancy. >> you were saying you had a big sample size, can you talk about the importance of diversity in a study like this one? >> yes. we are super excited about this study because it came from washington university and the population is enriched

for african american women which historically have had worse pregnancy outcomes in the u.s. it gives us the opportunity to look at that under studied population and find interventions that can help a population that needs this interventions the most. >> did you find any other cultural differences with the study? >> we did not look at other cultural differences. >> all right, thank you very much dr. aghaeepour. >> thank you for having me. another study looking at pregnancy drinks. women who consume energy drinks before and during pregnancy are at a greater risk of developing hypertension, they looked at more than 7,000 pregnancies and

women who have intake of energy drinks also reported high blood pressure. they found miscarriage, preterm birth and guestational diabetes. we will be right back
