>> for me it is a perfect segue how you should enjoy your retirement. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on kpix news. remember the days of going through wades of crowds of people who all had the same idea as you, heading to the malls or stores trying to score deals on or before black friday? most are snagging the deals on line. the stores are trying to stay relevant in digital world. scenes like these are not helping them make their case to get people off of their couches and into their doors this is what i am talking about now. this is caught on camera. time after time, people grabbing as much as they can carry and just walking out with it. this is such a big problem in a lot of big cities in the bay area, so much so that the

state has been throwing cities a lifeline. funding for fighting retail theft. however they see fit. we introduce you to a business that says they will take all of the help they can get but it will not be much. >> reporter: this store has been robbed several times. the police say organized retail hest here in the city has become a big issue. when they applied for grant money from the state they only received a fraction of what they asked for. >> chris's family has owned san jose camera and video for generations. the store will actually be celebrating its 100th year in business in 2027. chris says these past few years have been tough bringing challenges the stores never seen before >> it is brazen. armed robberies and people just running in with masks and guns, putting people on the ground and grabbing merchandise and running out. >> reporter: earlier this year five suspects robbed the store

at gunpoint, stealing $60,000 worth of merchandise and shooting one of the employees. chris was there when it happened. >> it is an interesting feeling. i don't know how else to explain it. just interesting. scary. but interesting as well. >> reporter: campbell police say this incident was one of several organized retail thefts in the city this year. that is why the department applied for a state grant asking for over $6 million to expand things like its drone and license plate reader programs. when the grantees were announced campbell's police department was awarded a little over $400,000. >> more funding, always beneficial for businesses and even the people that live here, too. >> reporter: for now chris and his family are relying on themselves to up security. >> we added silent alarms and things of that nature to help when people come in. hopefully it will notify the police quicker and they get here

this. they are out thousands of dollars after a string of break ins, the owner told our betty yu he is not ready to throw in the towel.. >> reporter: here on the compan hit six times by crooks in recent years the owner said this time a thief did not break the glass to get in. instead he used a crowbar to pry open the front door. in the early morning hours on monday a thief stole from the popular oakland restaurant not once but twice within 15 minutes. first, he took cash from the register. then, went back to clean out about $5,000 worth of alcohol. >> this one was more heartbreaking because we, thanksgiving is coming up, a

week of thankfulness and gratefulness and for this to happen. my mom just had a brain tumor removed. >> reporter: the owner, a former top chef contestant said running the kitchen is deeply personal. it reflects his heritage and his love for oakland. >> you want to think positive all of the time. you are all about community. you are all about the town, oakland, the bay area. then you have to worry about things like this. a sad situation. someone destroyed a statue of the mascot right outside of his restaurant. you can see an out line of the base still on the ground. the vandal also damaged the restaurant's patio in the overnight hours >> it is ridiculous. i am not even surprised, though. it is so bad here. i saw the elephant statue knocked over on the ground and i saw the video of everything getting stolen last

tore through the back of the building. the owner says there was no cooking happening at the time. now, the investigators are trying to figure out how this fire started. the owner posted he has gotten an outpouring of support and despite the damage they will still serve the community at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow horn will give out turkeys to families in need despite all of that. pretty impressive. a new series of reports revealing how rising sea levels will impact the world's coastlines earlier than predicted. in tonight's project earth we have a look at an ambitious undertaking of the rising of the seas by raising a bay area icon. >> i am standing in our virtual video of the landmark building. will it survive climate change? in a minute we will look at a daring plan to raise it seven feet but first juliette goodrich shows us what is at

stake. >> reporter: it graced the waterfront for 125 years, it survived two major earthquakes, the great quake of 1906 and once again in 1989. the enormous building stretches 660 feet in length. the most recognizable feature, the 245 foot tall clock tower >> a building that houses an old tower clock that we sort of treasure. >> reporter: he is one of only a handful of people allowed inside of the tower. along with his assistant, max, he keeps the original clock in tip top shape. >> my responsibility is to keep the clock running and keep it on time. >> reporter: but, according to a major report on climate change, time is running out. the dangers of floods, fires are mounting rapidly as global temperatures continue to rise. and the ferry building is under

threat from rising sea levels and extreme weather. >> we are already seeing flooding on the embarcadero. we know the bay is rising, we know it will continue to rise. >> reporter: the director of port of san francisco. according to the port, by the end of the century, the sea level along the shoreline is expected to rise anywhere from 3-7 feet. >> we must prepare this waterfront for the next generation. >> port officials are drawing up plans and strategies to strengthen and adapt the waterfront against seismic threats and sea level rise. >> we know if is magical and beautiful. what specifically matters and how do we prioritize what matters? >> the port held a series of public meetings. without a doubt, those that live and work around the embarcadero want to see the ferry building remain in tact, functioning, on site. that gave birth to this plan. >> we want to save the ferry

building. we want the building to be here for the next generation. so, that would mean raising the building. >> reporter: raising the building by as much as 7 feet. they believe that is time well spent. >> absolutely i vote yes. raise the ferry building. it saves my favorite clock tower but it is a wonderful building. it is definitely worth raising. >> i am back on our virtual reality set to show you how they plan to pull this off. first you build a temporary copper dam around the perimeter and then pump out the water and all of the mud as you see here until you get to the foundation. then comes the really, really tricky part. installing hundreds of hydraulic jacks with a computer system to lift the 25,000ton building slowly and extend the piers up, take the jacks out, purchase the water back in and remove the dam. easy, right? we are a decade away from starting the project, once the jacks are in place the lift will only

[ laughter ] >> all of us. right there with you. we will be here. let's take a look at what is happening weatherwise and we will look at the virtual map and talk about the forecast in a moment. looking at the weather pattern. we have passing clouds in the forecast again tomorrow. a mix of clouds and sunshine. similar to what we had today. it will not be overcast but a filtered effect to the sun over head as the forecast shifts around a little bit on thursday, the skies will clear out. we will see plenty of sunshine from thanksgiving all of the way into the

weekend. gusty off shore winds are going to develop late thursday and continuing thursday night and friday. the national weather service not leaning towards a wind advisory. it may be necessariary higher elevations above 2,000 feet or so. the passing clouds, taking a bit out of solar. there will be sun filtering through and the solarpanels do pick it up. it will continue throughout the holiday weekend. mostly clear skies at the moment. the next wave off of the coast. the temperatures are dropping off without a blanket of clouds over head. now, everybody else is in the 40s and you will have plenty of company in the 40s by tomorrow morning, some of the chilliest spots, dipping down into the upper 30s to start the day on wednesday. and despite that vail of high clouds, the temperatures are going to warm up nicely. let's look at our forecast highs, ending up 4-8 degrees above average wednesday

afternoon. 7 or 8 degrees in the valley. warm spots reaching up into the lower 70s for the day before thanksgiving, we will take that. upper 60s inland in the east bay. in fact, everybody in the east bay, if it is bayside or farther inland, should hit the 60s, upper 70s. middle 60s along the coast in half moon bay and upper 60s for san francisco and oakland. temperatures north of the golden gate, even though the cloud cover will be thicker you will have enough sunshine filtering through to warm temperatures up in the upper half of the 60s, some threatening 70 degrees. tomorrow, it is a very, very busy travel day. let's take a look at the travel forecast. here is the good news, there are not too many trouble spots. the storm system making it through the coast right now. slowing down the early flights to new york, philadelphia, newark, washington, d.c., all of the travel hubs, the only place that the rain will linger will be boston. any flights connecting through or going to

logan international may have delays. otherwise calm conditions across the entire country and calm conditions around california if you are staying home. the only problem will be the volume of traffic on the roads. the temperatures slightly above average, from the 50s, up the coast, to the middle 70s. close to 80 degrees for southern california, around san diego and los angeles. let's take a look at the forecast and focus more on the bay area, cooler temperatures in the area. warm days inland we are back to closer to normal temperatures over the weekend and next week. that is will the coolest it will get near average for late november. i think we can handle that. similar conditions around the bay as well. and along the coast you will not be all that cool either. temperatures in the lower to middle 60s through the weekend and into next week. in is absolutely flow hint of rain in the extended forecast. we will stay dry through at least monday and tuesday. there

are signs that maybe we get back into an active pattern as we finish the month of november and head into early december. that is still nine or 10 days away. a long time to focus on that. >> paul, thank you very much. oakland police say tips from neighbors led to two arrests in the murder of an oakland mom shot to death while sleeping on her own coach. she was hit by a rifle round fired from a block away from her home in the laurel district. the police say the killers were aiming for a passing car. more than two months and three search warrants later, the police arrested two men but still looking for more suspects, oakland has not had a permanent police chief for 9 months now. the search for the city's top cop has been messy. the police commission has recommended a total of seven candidates and that includes surprisingly to some, the former chief. lamar armstrong. fighting to get his job back for most of the year after he was fired over the handling of

a officer misconduct case. the former chief is heading up a different squad as a coach. vern glenn is here. so, i love hearing stories when you hear about somebody who has a career and something they work on their whole lives and has a hidden talent. i feel like that is what we are talking about here? >> yeah, who knew. long time ago, armstrong hung up his basketball shoes and moved on to a 25 plus career in law enforcement. so, the last thing he probably expected was to all of a sudden bark through basketball drills and advise the head coach on the bench. times have changed. >> for the first month or so they did not know who i was. he is just coach. now, recently they are oh, that is chief armstrong. >> he has a new beat. >> pass it tj. knock it down. >> reporter: he is patrolling

the sideline for oakland's basketball team when i say coach armstrong do you have to double take? >> it is still new for me. getting used to it. it is something that makes me smile. >> reporter: the former oakland police chief was let go earlier this year after over two decades on the force. so, it was an easy decision when his friend and long time dragons head coach lou ritchie asked him to help out >> for me it is a perfect segue how you should enjoy your retirement. being around young people that give you energy. watching young people to develop. giving them any help that you can. >> he is invaluable. invaluable. >> left hand, left hand, left hand. way to go, jack. >> reporter: armstrong is no stranger to the hardwood. he played in school and in college at sacramento state. >> you are one of those guys, "boys, when i played ...." >> you have to have those
