the u.s. and canada. the latest on the investigation. first, balloons, bands, celebrities, and santa. giant stars coming to life as millions are expected to turn out for new york's big thanksgiving day parade. good morning, and happy thanksgiving. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. new york city's thanksgiving day parade returns for its 97th year today with dozens of high-flying balloons. the stars, 16 giant character balloons. there are also 26 floats, more than 700 clowns, 12 marching bands, and of course celebrity guests. security around the celebration, though, is especially tight due to the ongoing tensions in the middle east. cbs' bradley blackburn joins us now from the parade route. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning, and happy thanksgiving. security is always tight around this parade. this year there are more concerns.

thousands of police officers are focused on that, so kids can worry about spotting santa as this holiday tradition takes flight again. the balloons are pumped up and ready to go. pikachu and ronald mcdonald lined up -- >> i like the sponge bob. >> reporter: for a parade that's as much a thanksgiving tradition as turkey and pumpkin pie. >> it's awesome. get out here and get to see these balloons, you know. it's nice, brings me back to old days of going to the thanksgiving parade. >> reporter: the macy's thanksgiving day parade draws millions of spectators to manhattan streets and millions more on screens across the country. macy's says this year's parade includes 11 bands, 31 floats, and at least 16 giant character balloons, wrangled by hundreds of volunteers. >> snoopy is one of our larger balloons. it will have one of most handlers, about 90 balloon handlers. >> reporter: those handlers are ready to manage wind gusts, but this year these high-flying balloons lift off in a cloud of

security concerns, a heightened threat environment due to the israel-hamas conflict especially lone wolf attacks on soft targets. thousands of nypd officers will be positioned along the 2.5-mile route. >> our heavy weapons teams, our blocker trucks, officers deployed throughout the route. >> reporter: city officials stress there is no specific, credible threat against the parade, but they say they are on high alert today and for large gatherings throughout this holiday season. they are serious about it so all these crowds can focus on the fun. and let's get you ready with turkey trivia for around the dinner table. some of these floats are taller than a five-story building. they are longer than a blue whale. at this parade's entire history they've only missed three years during world war ii. you can watch coverage today here on cbs.

latest on what's happening in the middle east. >> reporter: good morning. one can only imagine what it's like for the families of the hostages waiting to be reunited with their loved ones. now qatar, who was crucial in getting this deal done, says the start of the cease-fire will be announced within the next few hours. israel says it will continue its war on hamas with the four-day cease-fire delayed until tomorrow at the soonest. >> if an agreement will occur, we will cease our fire. we will be in our positions. we will be ready. >> reporter: family members of those believed to have been taken hostage by hamas now have to wait at least another day to find out if their loved ones are among the 50 women and children who will be released under the agreement. >> you see the deal is coming, you hope she's there. if she not be there, i believe we will fall apart. >> reporter: the u.s. says three americans are expected to be released among the 50. relatives are hopeful this

3-year-old toddler is among them. >> no child should be a hostage, no child should be in this situation. >> reporter: israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says the deal will allow the red cross to visit with the remaining hostages and give them medication. in addition to the temporary pause in fighting, israel is expected to release 150 palestinian women and children from its prisons and allow larger aid convoys into gaza. >> it's a very big tunnel. >> reporter: on wednesday, israeli forces gave a tour of the tunnels it says were operated by hamas under gaza's al shifa hospital. >> it uses the hospital as a human shield. they understand we will not attack them. >> reporter: dozens of premature babies evacuated from that hospital are now recuperating in egypt. doctors say the situation is dire for the remaining 250 or so patients at al shifa, warning that dialysis patients are at risk of dying. both prime minister netanyahu and president biden have said they will not stop until all of the more than 200 hostages taken

by hamas are free. israel says the deal also allows for an additional day in the cease-fire for every extra ten hostages released by hamas, but israel says make no doubt that they are going to fight until hamas is eliminated. anne-marie? >> all right, ian lee in london. thank you so much. pope francis is facing backlash over his remarks after meeting with relatives of israeli hostages and palestinian families. francis met separately with each group yesterday and said the conflict had gone beyond war to become what he calls terrorism. the pope made the unscripted remarks at his general audience in st. peter's square where he asked that people pray for peace. back here at home, the fbi is wrapping up its investigation into the deadly explosion at one of the busiest border crossings between the u.s. and canada that prompted fears of a terror attack. the fbi says no explosives were found, and there's no indication

of a terrorist act. the victims, a new york man and his wife, the story now from cbs' michael george. >> reporter: video shows the vehicle speeding along the roadway and launching into the air before landing and exploding on the u.s. side of the border with canada. authorities say the two people inside the car died in the incident that took place on the busiest travel day of the year. >> at this time, there is no indication of a terrorist attack, but i state the caveat that the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: a preliminary law enforcement assessment obtained by cbs news said the vehicle hit a curb or embankment and landed in an inspection area and exploded. the incident, the day before thanksgiving, initially raised security concerns on both sides of the border. >> the world is watching to find out what happened here. again, at a time when there's

such high anxiety, stress levels are already high, and we've been on heightened alert since october 7th. >> reporter: disclosing few details, new york governor kathy hochul said the driver was from western new york. >> looked like he hit the fence, and this fire started. and then all of a sudden he went up in the air, and then it was a ball of fire like 30, 40 feet high. never seen anything like it. >> reporter: a border patrol officer was injured, but officials say he was largely protected by a security booth. the rainbow bridge will remain closed for now as law enforcement continues to investigate. michael george, cbs news, new york. newly released bodycam video shows an atlanta police officer using a taser on a church deacon who later died. a warning, you may find this video disturbing. >> i'm not -- sign the ticket -- i'm -- put your arms behind your back now. put your arms behind your back. put your arms behind your back.

>> the video shows the officer responding to a minor car crash back in august where 62-year-old johnny holman sr. apparently disregarded multiple commands to sign a traffic ticket. the officer tased him as you saw after he had repeatedly said he could not breathe while he was pinned to the ground. >> call the police. he waited for over an hour without incident, and then he cried out for help because the hands of the police, the tasing, the beating, he cried out. >> an autopsy determined holman's death was a homicide with heart disease a contributing factor. the family has called on prosecutors to charge the officer with murder. an attorney for the officer, who was fired, says he acted lawfully. coming up, walmart shooting suspect. police reveal a possible motive in an attack that wounded four shoppers. and later, taylor swift concert probe. the death of a fan in brazil triggers an investigation.

better days start with zzzquil nights. a train derailment in a remote part of eastern kentucky caused a chemical spill. the governor declared a state of emergency and is encouraging 200 residents of the town of livingston to evacuate. it involved 16 cars, who -- two were carrying molten sulfur. one crew member suffered minor injuries. the u.s. said it foiled a plot to kill a sikh separatist, and new details about a walmart shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the dayton daily news" reports the shooting at a walmart in suburban ohio was likely racially motivated. the fbi says evidence including journal writings show monday's shooting may have been at least partially inspired by racist extremism. four shoppers were wounded. the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. the "associated press"

reports the u.s. thwarted a plot to kill a sikh separatist leader on american soil. u.s. officials are now concerned the indian government may have had prior knowledge of the plot against the man. in september, canada's prime minister said that there were credible allegations the indian government may have had links to the assassination in that country of a sikh activist. india's foreign ministry did not directly respond to the accusation. "the las vegas sun" said a judge struck down an effort to include abortion rights in nevada's constitution. the judge ruled the proposed ballot initiative was too broad. the proposed petition would have amended the state's constitution to add reproductive rights including prenatal care, birth control, vasectomy, and abortion. still to come, a lawsuit against jamie foxx. details about sexual assault allegations against the oscar-winning actor. nning actor.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ happy thanksgiving to you all. >> well, they may be hundreds of miles above the earth, but astronauts aboard the international space station are celebrating a special thanksgiving today. they plan to enjoy a traditional meal of roast turkey, cranberry sauce, butternut squash, and a cran apple dessert. need help with your turkey and an important message for parents. here's jarred hill with today's cbs "money watch". >> reporter: hey, happy thanksgiving. markets are closed for the holiday. investors might be thankful for a pretty strong finish on wednesday. the dow ticked up 184 points. nasdaq jumped 65, and the s&p 500 was up 18 points. a couple of safety warnings to tell you about.

first, federal regulators say stop using the miracle baby lounger immediately. this was sold on amazon. according to the consumer product safety commission the design of the lounger combined with improper labeling creates a suffocation and fall risk. the commission will send a notice directly to impacted customers. the fda says stop using anything made by the supplement brand neptune's fix. they've gotten multiple reports of severe reactions including seizures and hospitalizations. neptune's fix claims to contain an unapproved opioid alternative which the fda says has been linked to addiction and deadly overdose. they're worried that other substances may be mixed in, as well. neptune's fix is sold illegally on line and at places like gas stations and smoke shops. popeye's is expanding its menu adding five new wing flavors that includes honey barbecue, signature hot, as well as sweet and spicy. last month popeye's overtook kfc as the number-two chicken joint in the country.

♪ actor jamie foxx is being accused of sexual assault. a jane doe filed a lawsuit saying foxx assaulted her on a rooftop in 2015. she's suing foxx and the restaurant and employees for compensatory punitive damages. so far no response from foxx. and guns and roses singer axl rose is also coming under fire for his alleged behavior back in 1989. former "penthouse" model sheilah kennedy is suing him for allegedly raping her in a new york city hotel room. a lawyer for rose called the claims fictional.
