shoppers are ready to score the best deals for the holiday. why it may be different this year. and there's a new top dog in town. the cute pooch who took home this year's biggest prize at the national dog show. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm jarred hill in for anne-marie green. we begin with a pause in fighting between israel and hamas now under way. the temporary truce which began overnight paves the way for the release of hostages. it appears to be holding. dozens of israeli armored vehicles including tanks were seen moving away from the gaza strip. first halt in the fighting since the war started nearly two months ago. bradley blackburn joins us now from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. almost as soon as the cease-fire started this morning, trucks with fuel and other supplies were seen entering the terminal at the rafah border crossing into gaza. this agreement should allow an increase in aid to palestinian

civilians and the release of at least some of those israeli hostages. a large plume of smoke was seen over gaza this morning as the four-day cease-fire began. it follows a day of intense israeli air strikes including one they say killed a hamas commander. later today the first 13 women and children hostages held in gaza are expected to be released. >> those hostages are from the same families, will be put together within the same patch. >> reporter: qatar led negotiations with u.s. and egyptian involvement for a deal that includes the release of 50 hostages over the four-day pause, in exchange for the release of 150 palestinian prisoners and more humanitarian aid for gaza. for every ten additional israeli hostages freed, there will be an extra day of the pause, and more palestinian prisoners released. >> we are so grateful for any hostage that will be released. >> reporter: ilay david says his emotions are mixed because his 22-year-old brother is not expected to be freed in this

initial agreement. >> i still fear for his life, but i am also hopeful that that deal will be the start of something bigger. >> reporter: this palestinian man in gaza says he is also full of hope as crowds of displaced civilians started heading to their homes soon after the pause began. on social media and with flyers, israeli forces are warning palestinians not to return to northern gaza, saying the war is not over. and president biden is spending the thanksgiving holiday in nantucket with his family. yesterday he told reporters his fingers are crossed that a 3-year-old american hostage could be released. he plans to say more about the deal sometime today. >> a lot of hopes there. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. well, the hostage deal calls for israel to release three palestinian prisoners for every one israeli who's freed. many in gaza argue that this still is not enough. imtiaz tyab is in east jerusalem.

[ chants ] >> reporter: they marched through the streets of ramallah shouting the deal between israel and hamas isn't enough. they want to see an end to the war on gaza completely and the release of all palestinian prisoners. according to palestinian prisoners rights groups, there are over 200 palestinian children being held in israeli jails, and around 75 women. with dozens of them arrested in the last two weeks alone. [ chants ] bringing the total number of palestinians currently jailed in israel to over 7,000. palestinian american johara baker grew up in virginia and now lives in the occupied west bank. since the october 7th attacks, there have been around 2,000 palestinians who have been puts in prison. >> palestinians know that this is how israel always reacts to us. anyone who has even a little bit of a voice, that does not -- that pushes back against the oppression and against occupation, they will crack down on us.

>> reporter: with israel poised to release 150 palestinian prisoners in exchange for 50 hostages held by hamas in gaza, it's part of a long history of asymmetric prisoner swaps. in 2011 israeli soldier gilad shalit was freed from five years of captivity in gaza in exchange for 1,000 palestinians in israeli jails. including yahyah sinwar, now one of hamas' most powerful leaders. samaher aouad's daughter is on israel's list of jailed palestinians who might be freed as parts of the deal. she was arrested at just 15 for the attempted stabbing of an israeli soldier nine years ago. the israeli occupation stole her childhood, and that's what i feel sad about, she says, no one can replace her childhood. and the plight of prisoners is a deeply emotive issue for palestinians. according to the palestinian prisoner society, at least four in ten palestinian men will spend at least some of their life in israeli jails.

imtiaz tyab, cbs news, jerusalem. president biden is urging people across the u.s. to come together this holiday season. he made the remarks when he called into the macy's thanksgiving day parade special. mr. biden said that we can all have different political views, but we should, quote, focus on dealing with our problems and being together. now that thanksgiving is over, it's time to talk about black friday shopping. retailers are offering some of the biggest deals of the year. electronics are expected to be a top seller, obviously, again. overall, the national retail federation politics americans -- predicts americans will spend close to $1 trillion during the holidays. and more than 180 million people are expected to shop this weekend. a lot of folks are trying to be strategic about their spending. >> everything's more expensive now. i think that's why it's more important to utilize those sales. >> now while analysts expect those sales to continue through december, they believe that some of the biggest discounts are still going to be this weekend. ahead on "cbs mornings," we

are talking to "usa today's" consumer news correspondent charisse jones to find out what kind of deals you should be looking out for today. the world health organization is asking china for information on a spike in respiratory infections among kids. according to the w.h.o., since mid-october, china has reported a jump in children with flu-like illnesses. chinese health officials have linked it to loosening covid restrictions. the w.h.o. says those officials have not detected any new or unusual pathogens, and right now there is no indication that the outbreak in china poses a global threat. back at home, a former state department official is charged with a hate crime after he was caught on video apparently unleashing multiple islamophobic rants against a food cart vendor in new york. roxana saberi reports. >> reporter: the nypd charged stuart seldowitz with crimes including aggravated harassment and a hate crime. mohamed hussein recorded him

several times on different days outside his food cart and says he made anti-islamic statements. >> you're a terrorist. you support terrorism. >> reporter: seldowitz had been a career state department official and also worked for the obama administration as acting director for south asia at the national security council. >> i'm going put big signs here that say this guy is -- believes in hamas. killed 4,000 palestinian kids. you know what, it wasn't enough. >> reporter: he reportedly said the videos don't tell the whole story, claiming hussein told him he supported hamas which hussein denies. since the israel-hamas war began on october 7th, reports of anti-semitic and anti-muslim incidents have risen rapidly. >> people feel justified in taking out their anger against the populations that they perceive as their enemies. >> reporter: heidi beirich is co-founder of the global project against hate and extremism. do you think this trend of hate crimes will continue? >> i don't think this will stop until the situations in the middle east changes in some way.

at least 100 people took to the streets after this incident yesterday, torching vehicles, smashing store windows, attacking riot police. ireland's police chief said 34 people were arrested and one officer was seriously injured. the authorities said the unrest was caused by misinformation and blamed a, quote, complete lunatic faction driven by far right idealogy. there's an update to a train derailment in kentucky, and the mayor of new york city is responding to new allegation. those are some of the headlines on this morning's "morning newsstand." "washington post" reports new york city mayor eric adams is facing a sexual assault allegation from 30 years ago. in the three-page legal summons filed wednesday a woman says adams sexually assaulted her in new york in 1993 when they were both working for the city. this would typically be past the statute of limitations but new york's adult survivors act suspended the time limit for for a year ending last night. she's asking for a trial and $5 million. adams denied the accusation and

said he did not remember meeting the woman. "npr" says people in a town in kentucky where a train derailed wednesday can finally go back home. authorities urged people again yesterday to leave their homes in livingston after two train cars carrying potentially harmful chemicals continued to burn. the flames have since been extinguished. officials say that two of the cars were carrying molten sulfur. many people including one woman were displaced on thanksgiving. >> our homes are empty. it's holidays. just makes you want to cry. >> officials say the fire is likely releasing sulfur dioxide. the environmental protection agency's website says that can cause respiratory problems. at this point it's unclear what caused the derailment. and "reuters" reports that the bidens will attend a memorial service for former first lady rosalynn carter. the white house says president biden will head to georgia on - tuesday.

trigger serious or even life-threatening allergic reactions. customers are urged to return jars that have a upc product code that ends with the numbers 03608. time for cbs "money watch." the stock market is back open today for an abbreviated session after closing yesterday. a judge has cleared the way for a lawsuit against elon musk and tesla over a fatal car crash. the florida circuit judge this week found reasonable evidence that tesla and musk knew that its self-driving technology was defective. that ruling clears the path for a lawsuit brought against the company over a deadly crash in 2019 which killed jeremy banner near miami. he was driving a model three at the time and had it on autopilot before it crashed into a semi-truck. tesla and musk have not commented. as black friday shopping gets under way, a new survey out says that americans are still paying off holiday debt from last year.
