avraham, was airlifted to a hospital in life-threatening condition which doctors believe is a result of an extended period of time when she was not cared for. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu visited the gaza strip. he spoke with troops and said every effort was being made to bring the hostages home. the pentagon confirms a u.s. navy ship captured a group of attackers who temporarily seized an israeli linked tanker in the gulf of adan. cbs' naomi ruchim now with the latest developments on everything happening in the middle east. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. u.s. officials are hopeful that two women, both dual u.s./israeli citizens, will be freed today in this fourth round of hostages. but seven american men are still unaccounted for, and as of this morning it's unclear if the cease-fire will continue beyond today. this comes as hamas has said it will seek to extend the deal by looking to release a larger number of hostages.

tearful embraces as hostages freed by hamas reunited with family members in israel over the weekend. sunday the terror group handed over a third round of hostages. this time as many as 17. among them was 4-year-old american citizen abigail edan whose parents were killed during the october 7th attacks. >> she has family, and we're taking care of her. so don't worry about it, and it's very important to let her be now with the family. >> reporter: in a video message, the young girl's aunt thanked everyone for their support and asked for privacy. the white house says president biden spoke with abigail's family by phone yesterday after her release. >> we will not stop working until every hostage is returned to their loved ones. >> reporter: the president also had a call with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. he says he told biden that he would welcome an extension of the temporary cease-fire in exchange for the release of an additional ten israeli hostages per day.

netanyahu also says his country's fight against hamas will restart in full force once the pause is over. cheers erupted in the west bank for another group of 39 palestinians who were freed from israeli prisons yesterday. more humanitarian aid trucks are also moving into gaza as part of the deal, though local residents say it is not enough. the united nations warns the region could be on the brink of famine. meantime, tech entrepreneur elon musk is in israel today after being accused by civil rights groups of amplifying anti-jewish comments on his social media platform x, formerly known as twitter. he will meet with the israeli president and relatives of those held hostage by hamas. anne-marie? >> all right. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. coming up on "cbs mornings," john kirby, the national security council's coordinator for strategic communications, will update us on the cease-fire

and the hope to bring more hostages home. that's ahead at 7:00. breaking overnight, a suspect is under arrest in connection with the shooting of three palestinian college students walking near the university of vermont. investigators say the men were visiting the home of one of the victims' relatives in burlington when they were confronted by a white man and shot and wounded saturday. one of the students was seriously injured. 48-year-old jason eaton was taken into custody and is expected to be arraigned today. >> these are three arab looking young men wearing kafis which are traditional palestinian scarves, speaking arabic, walking down the street. certainly a strong possibility and we shudder at the thought this might be a hate crime. >> police say two of the victims are u.s. citizens and one is a legal resident. a three-day mourning period begins today in georgia for former first lady rosalynn carter.

the wife of former president jimmy carter died last week at the age of 96. a wreath laying will take place at georgia's southwestern state university in americus. afterwards rosalynn carter will lie in repose at the carter presidential library and museum in atlanta. funeral services will take place on wednesday. and about 45,000 portland, oregon, students will be back in class this morning after a nearly month-long teacher yesterday the state's largest school district said it reached a tentative agreement with the teachers union. educators have been on the picket line since november 1st over issues including pay, class size, and planning time. the deal still needs to be approved by the teachers, though, and the school board. and now to the holiday shopping season. despite rising costs and high interest rates, consumers spent big and set records this weekend, and the trend is expected to continue today, cyber monday. here's cbs' astrid martinez. >> reporter: energized crowds

out in force this weekend found joy in brick and mortar shopping and holiday fairs like this one in dallas. >> gifts and things that our families wouldn't find somewhere else. >> reporter: the national retail federation estimates 182 million people will shop from thanksgiving through cyber monday, nearly 16 million more than last year. even with more people looking for an in-person shopping experience like right here in new york city's brian park, data from shopify finds that 93% of consumers will buy some of their gifts on line. eri matisoff with adobe analytics say there will be the deepest discounts on monday. >> we're expecting that cyber monday will be the biggest shopping day of the year with apparel and electronics driving a lot of those purchases, up to just about $90 billion. >> reporter: the day could set a cyber monday record following a $9.8 billion spending record set on black friday. adobe's numbers are not adjusted

the country. more than a foot fell in parts of kansas creating treacherous road conditions. winter storm warnings and advisories are in effect over the great lakes and parts of the northeast. and there are safety concerns about weapons used by u.s. troops, and an update on derek chauvin after he was attacked. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports the former minneapolis police officer convicted of killing george floyd was stabbed by another inmate in an arizona prison. a person familiar with the matter told the "ap" that derek chauvin was seriously injured friday at a federal prison in tucson. the state attorney general's office says chauvin is expected to survive. chauvin is serving more than 22 years for murdering and violating floyd's civil rights in 2020. "the new york times" says u.s. troops are still training on weapons with a known risk of brain injury. pentagon researchers say weapons like shoulder-fired rockets expose troops who fire them to blast waves far above safety

limits. the "times" says they are still being widely used. in recent years congress ordered the military to set safety limits and start tracking troops' exposure. last year the military did set blast limits, but the "times" says little has changed. the pentagon says it has taken steps to reduce blast exposure. the "rolling stone" says a third accuser is suing rapper sean "diddy" combs of alleged sexual assault. the anonymous woman claims combs and a singer-songwriter took turns raping her and a friend after a music industry event in the early 1990s. she also says combs turned violent when he visited the women a couple days later. a spokesperson for combs denied the allegations. earlier this month, combs settled a lawsuit one day after singer cassie accused him of rape, sex trafficking, and abuse. and still to come, lottery windfall. how a mistake helped an illinois man become a winner for life.

november's full moon also known as the beaver moon is in full illumination. if you missed it, we should have one more night of it so you can still look up into the heavens. it's called the beaver moon because according to the old farmer's almanac this is the time beavers start sheltering in their lodges. it's the last full moon before the winter solstice. an iceberg three times the size of new york city is drifting beyond antarctic waters. the iceberg known as a23a split from the largest ice shelf on earth in 1986, but then it got stuck on the ocean floor and stayed put for about three decades. experts believe the iceberg decreased in size and came loose. it has reportedly been drifting for about a year now. new york republican congressman george santos says he expects to be expelled from congress. santos made the comments friday

during an interview on x-spaces and lashed out at colleagues saying there's felons galore. it cams days after a house ethics committee said santos broke the law by deceiving donors and using campaign funds on personal expenses. the committee chairman introduced a resolution to expel santos from congress. russia has reportedly put the spokesperson for tech company meta on a most-wanted list. russian news agencies are reporting andy stone was included on the list just weeks after russia classified meta as a terrorist and extremist organization. he is allegedly wanted on criminal charges. meta, of course, owns facebook and instagram. and pope francis revealed he has lung inflammation. the vatican announced this weekend that francis was under the weather and sought medical attention. the pope told his audience during sunday mass that he still plans to travel to dubai later this week to deliver a speech at a climate change conference there. china is addressing a surge
