we are seeing less donations, less government support. a critical shortage of help as more of our neighbors need our support. people need help. the part that gets to me some days is there does not seem to be an end to it. >> from food to blood >> we never want someone to number a situation where they don't have the blood they need to survive. >> ways you can help our bay area communities this season >> people end up here because they are passionate about helping other people and they get hooked. thank you for joining us this afternoon. i'm elizabeth cook. it is the season of giving. due to inflation and a lot of other factors so many people are struggling to make ends meet. today, we look at

how you can help fill the growing needs in our own communities. first, though, let's get you caught up on today's news headlines. >> the ban on street vending in the mission district is now in effect. it starts today and goes for the next 90 days. today, vendors fought back asking the city to push back but city leaders say it say matter of safety and those in charge of enforcement have been threatened and assaulted while cracking down on illegal activity. today the city announced a plan to reopen two marketplaces to host permanent street vendors. the vendors say the sites have limited spaces and hurt their business during holiday season. the 5-year-old girl who died after being swept out to sea has been just identified. firefighters pulled her from the ocean off of martin's beach in san mateo county. the coast guard says she was with her grandfather when they got swept

in. first responders called off the search for him. israel has just confirmed 11 hostages released from captivity returned to israeli territory. there is the fourth release. the white house confirms israel and hamas agreed to extend the pause in fighting for two more days. this comes on the final day of their original four-day pause. as part of the deal israel is expected to release 33 more palestinian prisoners today. let's get to our first alert weather right now. look outside t is breathtaking. i hope you got a chance to check out the sky. we could see rain as soon as it were. let's check in with darren peck. >> we will go into the detail. late tomorrow night, primarily wednesday morning and another opportunity after that. keep in mind for tomorrow morning there is a frost advisory as well for inland north bay valleys, cold again, middle 30s. there is a

coastal flood advisory along the shore tomorrow morning for high tide. you have been experiencing that over the last few days, if you live near the trouble spotted you know. you got to keep the two things in mind. here is the system that liz was talking about. pozzability for rain shows up. when we come in for a close-up and play it forward watch the bands get here late tonight, most of tomorrow is fine. by the evening the initial bands show up. early wednesday more noticeable rain from that. late wednesday it should be done. other rounds coming our way. watch the next line of rain that shows up by the time we get to thursday. so, when we look at the seven-day forecast you will see there is a chance of rain scattered thought. in fact, let's get into the seven-day forecast now. i will show you what it looks like. it is kind of messy. wednesday's rain shows up back here, showers late in the morning. then, thursday and friday a couple follow up waves could come through and we should be done by the time we get to sunday. liz back to you. >> darren, thank you very much. today we are highlight

something of the biggest needs across our bay area communities this holiday season. starting with one you may not think of first. the need for blood donations. the american red cross calls it an often invisible emergency. they declared a national blood shortage back in september citing a busy travel season and back to back climate disasters. while donations increased since then, the organization says it still needs to collect 10,000 more units for week to meet patient's needs. >> we never want someone to be in a situation where they don't have the blood they need to survive. >> helping people is a timeless thing. not just one time. i look forward to it, to tell you the truth. >> the red cross says the process for donating blood takes 45 minutes to an hour from start to finish and that inclouds time for that post donation snack. another organization working to collect blood donations now and in the

weeks to come. joining me now is the communication director, thank you for joining us. >> you are welcome, thank you. give us perspective on where the donations are now compared to last year. >> well, we are seeing a 25% drop year to year. the holidays are busy, busy time. search doing things, going shopping, taking care of family. school is out. so, donations drop during the holidays. this is the hardest time to get people to donate and see the largest dramatic drop in blood donors the entire year. fewer donors the last two months december and january than the entire year. it is important that eligible donors carve out, like you said, it takes about an hour, an hour of your time, stop by a donation center. find a community blood drive near you. give blood. it really does, it makes an impact on those patients. while we are busy and have things to do

hospital patients are still relying on blood. they don't take a holiday >> it can be-changing and sometimes life-saving, can you speak about the importance of having constant blood donations on a daily basis. what kind of conditions does the supply help? >> it is, you know, a lot of people take for granted how important donating blood is. there are so many hospital procedures that simply would not be possible without donated blood. you know, the list is really countless. just to puts it in perspective for you or maybe, i think everyone touches it, 25%, roughly 25% of all donations go to support cancer patients? cancer patients go with chemotherapy. the red cells are dying or killed off by the treatment. they need a fresh supply of blood when they go through treatments, 25 of those donations go to help cancer patients. >> wow. so many of us know somebody who has suffer friday cancer what do you think that is keeping people away? why do

you think people decide not to do this? >> you know it is, one it is, it is be honest it is the needle stick that keeps a lot of people away. the fear of going in and having a needle in you. we would like to say the people who are on the other end of that needle, they are trained professionals and know what they are doing. they want to make the process and procedure as simple and painless as possible. it really is. you know, there is a quick needle prick and then it is over. after it is said and done you are feeling great. a little prick or stick compared to what patients are going. it is the least somebody can do to help the patients t. is easy. takes about an hour and you will feel great afterwards. >> a good reminder if you want to give back, maybe your finances don't allow you to give money or not a lot of time in volunteering it is a great way. does not cost you anything. just show up and give an hour of your time. it makes

look at the growing need this holiday season with a focus on food banks. they are getting pushed to the brink. they say hunger is at the highest it has been in years. today in our food for bay area family drive, we show you how the food bank of contra costa and solano provides critical help. >> reporter: every friday, flora loads her grandkids in the car and heads out to get food for the week. but she is not going to the neighborhood super market. instead, she is on her way to church. what we are hoping to get here is the basics, she told me, milk, eggs, bread, maybe some vegetables. for months now she has been coming to the father's house church pantry in vacaville, this after escaping violence in her native country of nicaragua. the situation there was difficult, she said, it was hard to get a job so we came here to find a better life

for the children. >> but even though she has been working full time it has been hard to make ends meet. >> one bag of meat and at the exit two eggs, two pork, okay? >> whatever money she makes goes towards rent and bills. accepting charity is the price she has to pay to put food on the table. >> at first, yes, it was a little painful accepting this new reality, she said. but, i am very grateful to have this. >> all of the way back. >> reporter: food banks, pantries across the country are bracing for what could be one of the worst winters yet due to inflation and the end of pandemic-era benefits. >> the part that gets to me some days there does not seem to be an end to it. >> reporter: pastor has been running the pant row for 12 years. he says every day the lines here get longer as more and more people fall through the cracks. >> there is a high percentage that come now that never come

before. there are people who were not aware of social services because they never needed them before. they say it is now serving a staggering 465,000 people a month or 1 in 4 residents in the area. >> we have seen the need just continue increase plont over month. we are expecting it to increase during the holidays as well. >> reporter: as they go through the line floar and her family are allowed two bags a food for person. they fill with everything on her list. it is a huge blessing. i never imagined i would be able to find almost everything we needed in one place, she said. leaving her church pantry. her prayers answered for one more day. >> this season and all year around food banks are encouraging you to check with your employer to see if they

match donations. the san francisco marin food bank is looking forward to a big matching offer. they say until midnight, november 28th, every gift you make gets tripled thanks to a $25,000 match with wells fargo. and food bank works to help our neighbors in challenging circumstances. kenny choi shows us how a santa rosa food bank is helping the visually impaired. >> she is sight impaired leaving her unable to shop for groceries on her own. this helps me get those things. >> the center for the blind. a nonprofit helping people suffering from sight loss. they offer services for the first time, they can take home basic

groceries. how difficult is it for you. >> i have to remember what is there and have somebody shop for me. it is hard going to the store because you always feel rushed at the store. you never know who you are going to get to help you. >> it is volunteers from the empire food bank who are making this happen >> it feels to me like i am still doing something that matters. >> the food bank is offering the service for the first time as food costs spiked over the last few years. >> all of a sudden people who did not see themselves needing help need help. it is fun to be able to, you know, to be able to get smiles on people's faces. >> and they are green apples >> they heard about sight impaired people with sight dogs worth thousands but struggling for necessities. >> the people who have the dogs

are on disability and are really having a tough time making ends meet. and that just kicked off this inspiration for a food program to help people with disabilities. >> a bag full of food is one fewer thing to worry about. >> they are very conscious of our lack of sight and what they do for us to get through the food line and get the thing that we want. it is very, very much appreciated. >> you grab my arm. >> all right. >> and it is people literally and firatively leaning on each other. >> to learn how you can donate to the drive or volunteer your time head to our website kpix.com/give. for every $1 raised a bay area family will receive two meals. in addition to helping provide the meals, the organization glide in san francisco is hoping to put smiles on children's faces with toys. they are asking people to

select a gift from the toy list on their website and donate by december 11th. the salvation army is back this year with the red kettles. every year thousands post up on sidewalks and outside stores to collect donations. in 2019 the red kettle campaign raised $126 million. in 2022, donations dropped to $102 million. likely factors, the pandemic, inflation and the fact that people are not carrying cash like they used to. excuse me. the salvation army accepts donations via checks or digitally with apple pay, google pay, pay pal and venmo. all you need is your phone. most people end up here because they are passionate about helping people. >> how they are making sure families are fed. remember, you can watch us any time, anywhere on our streaming service, cbs news bay area. catch all of our live

i was like shaking you know, i was so scared. when i first reached out to jacoby and meyers. i didn't know if i had a case or not. as soon as i got a hold of my attorney, she was very, very nice, very kind.

. we know food banks rely on volunteers to meet the needs of their community. a lot of people give their time once in awhile we met some that is a they just can't stay away. we have that story from the alameda county food bank. >> reporter: eric started serving his community at the community food bank almost three decades ago. now he is the boss. >> he never, ever thought that -- this is not something that most people go to college for and say i am going to be a food banker. most people end up here because they are passionate about helping other people and they get hooked. >> reporter: he knows post pandemic the need for food only

increased. he doubled down on his hours serving. >> we are serving a million meals a week providing through the food bank. it is significantly more than what we were pre-covid. for example, budget for food was around $5 million a year post covid it is $18.1 million. >> reporter: inflation has a consequence. funding cuts are a reality for food banks, the cuts are deep. benefits that came out during the pandemic era, these emergency allotments and we found out that those were going to be cut severely the beginning flf year that resulted in about 3.1 million meals that were not available anymore just in alameda county. that is more work we need to do because there is a gap, right, and those folks still need the food. >> reporter: he was a software
