and farewell to a first lady. hundreds of americans pay their respects to rosalynn carter as she lies in repose as president biden and all of the living first ladies gather for a first ladies gather for a special tribute later today. captioning funded by cbs special tribute today. well, good morning and good to be with well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. israel and hamas have agreed to extend the truce for another two days in the hopes of bringing more hostages and prisoners home. another 11 israeli women and children were released yesterday, bringing the number of hostages freed to 69 in the lst four days, nearly half of them children. the only american let go was abigail idan who is now in the care of a family. her parents were murdered in the october 7th attack. and secretary of state anthony blinken will return this week to the middle east, his third trip to the region since the war began. shanelle kaul is following all

of the developments and she journeys us from new york. good morning, shanelle. >> hey, anne-marie. almost 75% of the population has now been driven away from their homes. now finally a break in fighting is giving new hope for more aid. >> this is a momentous day in our lives. >> reporter: after being held captive in faz for more than 50 days, two were finally released. >> i can feel him. i can smell him. he's coming. he's coming back very soon. >> reporter: the two were among 11 hostages freed on monday on the fourth and final day of the original truce between israel and hamas now extended to wednesday, the announcement coming from qatar, a key mediator in the talks, with israel agreeing to one more day for every ten hostages released. >> we hope that more americans will come out here in these next two installments, but we'll have

to wait and see. >> reporter: on sunday the youngest american held captive 4-year-old abigail idan was freed. >> wow, it's like a dream come true because we were in a nightmare. >> reporter: in return for the 73 hostages released by hamas, israel has released 117 palestinian prisoners made up of women and teenagers. the extension will allow even more aid into gaza with more trucks like these filled with food, medical aid, and fuel, joining the 150 that have already traveled into the strip since the truce began. >> we've got an extra two days. two more days of pauses, two more days of humanitarian assistance for those who need it. >> reporter: a priority for antony blinken, returning to israel this week for more talks. the two-day extension will also follow the same conditions which

includes the exchange of three palestinian prisoners for every hostage. >> all right, shanelle. shanelle kaul in new york, thank you. now to the disturbing violence in vermont that's being investigated as a hate crime. a 48-year-old man has pleaded not guilty in the shooting of three palestinian college students over the weekend. cbs's errol barnett has the latest on the investigation. >> are you jason eaton? yes. >> reporter: shooting suspect jason eaton is charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder. >> mr. eaton enters a not guilty plea to all three counts. >> reporter: authorities say saturday night as the 20-year-olds, all of palestinian descent, were walking down this street, two wearing key fee yas, traditional arab scarves, the suspect allegedly stepped out from a porch firing four rounds, injuring all three. one man sustained a spinal injury.

>> although we do not have evidence to support a hate crime enhancement, i do want to be clear there's no question this was a hateful act. >> reporter: family members have you'd feed the college students as tahseen ahmed, kinnan abdalhamid, and hisham awartini. two of the members are american citizens and the third is a legal resident. police found a pistol and magazine of bullets during the suspect's apartment which is across the street from the crime scene. >> atf tests have since connected the casings. >> reporter: two of the uncles are struggling to bring his nephew kinnan to the west bank. >> we figure it would be good to bring him here. it would be safe. but we feel a sense of betrayal lmts with the sense and hope for all of that and something so tragic occurred.

>> reporter: now one of the three young men has been released, which you see behind me. meantime the suspect faces 20 years to life in prison on each of the three counts he faces. errol barnett, cbs news, burlington, vermont. breaking overnight a court in moscow extended the pretrial detention of wall street reporter evan gershkovich. he will remain detained. he was arrested in march on espionage charges. he and the "journal" have denied those allegations and the u.s. government and he say he is being wrongfully detained. today presidents past and present and multiple first ladies will attend an invitation-only memorial for rosalynn carter, this after hundreds of americans came out to pay their respects as the formal first lady lies in repose.

cbs's david malkoff joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. tis is glen memorial church right behind me where later presidents and first ladies will say good-bye to a woman who spent her life in service from destigmatizing mental health care to literally building homes with her hands and hammers. rosalynn carter sure lived an extraordinary life. a tribute service honoring the life of first lady rosalynn carter will take place later today at emory university in atlanta. all of the living first ladies from hillary clinton to jill biden are expected to attend along with president biden, vice president harris, and former presidents bill clinton and jimmy carter himself. three days of tributes for the former first lady and daughter of plains, georgia, began yesterday with past and present members of the carter's secret service tee tail carrying her casket from the medical center in americus to her alma mater

georgia southwest state university where they left wreaths at the rosalynn carter health & human sciences complex her casket was then brought to the jimmy carter presidential library and museum in atlanta to lie in repose. at a ceremony yesterday mourners remembered her as a people person who was genuine and kind. >> she treated everyone with respect and dignity. she was unpretentious, never seeking recognition for herself. >> reporter: crowds of mourners came to pay their respects. >> i want to be part of a historic moment. i mean, not everybody, you know, can pay their respects to the first lady of the united states. >> reporter: a private funeral will be held at the baptist church in plains, georgia, where the carters have been active members for decades. at 1:00 p.m. the atlanta city

up to 16 hours long-lasting it makes me feel infallible. you're worth it. come on. >> come on. >> anybody in here? >> that's the video of an ohio state trooper rushing onto a bus after a fiery chain reaction crash earlier this month. officials say the police body cam video and -- rather, the released body cam video and report on the crash. it says a semitruck was following too closely when it hit another vehicle before slamming into the bus carrying high school students and chaperones. three students and three adults were killed. well, video onboard a southwest airlines plane shows passengers desperately trying to get off after officials say a man opened the emergency exit door and climbed onto the wing. it happened sunday as the plane was getting ready to pull back from an airport gate in new orleans. the man was apprehended on the

tarmac and taken to a hospital. authorities say he appeared to be suffering from a mental health emergency. a ransomware attack is impacting hospitals in multiple states, and an update on a shotting investigation at unc. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the raleigh "news & observer" reports a university of north carolina graduate student charged for killing his professor was found unfit for trial. tailei xi was charged with first-degree murder in the death of a professor in a science building. investigators found xi likely suffers from schizophrenia. he will be committed to a hospital for treatment. theal ber kurky journal says a ransomware attack is affecting hospitals in new mexico and five other states.

police in ann arbor, michigan, were in hot pursuit of what turned out to be a 12-year-old boy driving a forklift on saturday. police say the vehicle was left unlocked at the child's middle school with the key inside. the young driver led police on a chase during which he hit ten parked vehicles. the boy was taken into custody and no one was hurt.
