the nation, president biden, and all living first ladies honored the life and work of rosalynn carter as her family and husband of 77 years prepare to give her a private sendoff. good morning, and good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. talks are under way to extend the cease-fire between israel and hamas again which is set to expire today. hamas released 12 more hostages yesterday, ten of them israeli citizens. mostly seniors. along with two thai nationals. that brings the number of hostages released to 81 during the five-day truce. later today, senate majority leader chuck schumer is expected to give a major address about the soaring number of anti-semitic cases in the u.s. which he calls a crisis. shanelle kaul is following all the developments for us. she's joining us from new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. lawmakers say the terms of this agreed cease-fire appear to be holding up, but with this temporary truce set to expire

today, there are growing fears that a brutal battle over southern gaza will resume. celebrations erupted on the streets of tel aviv tuesday as israel welcomed home ten hostages released by hamas. >> she told me sometimes the food was not enough and the water was not enough. she told me some points they had a small bottle of water for each person for two days. >> reporter: nine israeli women and a 17-year-old girl plus two thai foreign nationals were freed one day before the temporary truce is set to end, though the deal could be extended again. in exchange for those freed hostages, israeli authorities say they released 30 more imprisoned palestinians, the youngest just 14 years old. no americans were freed on tuesday. >> still a lot there and more left to be done to get them out. >> reporter: up to nine are believed to be held captive including 19-year-old itay chen

whose father is holding out hope. >> the fact that he is a u.s. citizen, maybe that gives him maybe an extra layer of protection. but i don't think it matters too much to hamas. >> reporter: the relative calm of the truce allowed food, water, and fuel to move into gaza as the u.s. airlifts more than 54,000 pounds of aid for the 1.8 million people displaced and stuck within the enclave's borders. but the flow of that aid could soon come to a pause as congress debates how to proceed with funding israel's war. diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the remaining american hostages still continue with special presidential envoy for hostage affairs roger carstens set to touch down in israel today where he'll meet with israeli government officials and visit the families of americans held hostage in gaza. >> shanelle kaul in new york. thank you so much.

two of the youngest hostages still being held, 4-year-old ariel bibas and his 10 month-old brother kafir. yesterday their families and friends released balloons in tel aviv to push for their release along with their parents. coming up on "cbs mornings," we will talk to two of their family members pleading for help. that is ahead at 7:00. breaking overnight, a u.s. military osprey aircraft with eight people on board crashed into the sea off southern japan. japan's coast guard said that they found one person and debris. no word on the condition of the person or the fate of the others on board, though. officials say the osprey was apparently attempting to make an emergency landing at an airport before crashing. and it appears george santos' days in congress are numbered. another vote to indict the disgraced republican following a house report that found him guilty of corruption and fraud. late last night the freshman

many of george santos' gop colleagues supporting his ouster. he said he won't fight it. >> it's not a good use of my time. >> reporter: santos has pleaded not guilty to federal fraud and conspiracy charges, accused of stealing the identities of his campaign donors and ringing up thousands of dollars in purchases on their credit cards. the long island republican who's acknowledged fabricating many parts of his life's store is -- story is also charged with submitting false reports to the federal election commission. you think it needs to move now. >> it is -- it should have moved long ago based on his own admissions. >> reporter: momentum toward his expulsion began building earlier this month after a blistering report by the house ethics committee accused santos of using campaign money for luxury goods, botox treatments, and personal trips. >> he has no right to be here, and it is actually a travesty that he has been here for 11 months. >> reporter: scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol.

hunter biden is offering to testify publicly before congress. the house oversight committee subpoenaed president biden's son last month amid an impeachment inquiry into his father. committee chairman james comer says the testimony should be behind closed doors like others depositions. hunter biden says he wants to appear in public to prevent his testimony from being manipulated. later today, the carter family will say their final good-byes to first lady rosalynn carter who died last week at the age of 96. yesterday the nation said its final farewell in a memorial service attended by past and present presidents in addition to first ladies and other dignitaries. cbs' dave malkoff now from plains, georgia. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. let me ask you to take yourself back to the days of the carter presidency for a moment. the nation was still dealing with the impact of vietnam and all of the things that were

going on at that time like watergate, and americans looked to this tiny town, plains, georgia, for new direction. mrs. carter was a big part of that change. today is the third and final day of services honoring the life and legacy of former first lady rosalynn carter. ♪ yesterday a tribute service was held in atlanta with all five living first ladies, past and present, in attendance, as well as former president clinton and president biden. former president jimmy carter made a rare appearance in a wheelchair after entering hospice care earlier this year. the carters marked their 77th wedding anniversary back in july. their children say the former president was by his wife's side in her final moments. >> my mom spent most of her life in love with my dad. >> reporter: a tribute service featured remembrances from their children and grandchildren. >> my mother was the glue that

held our family together. >> reporter: and also a performance from husband and wife country stars garth brooks and trisha yearwood. ♪ and the world will be as one ♪ >> reporter: mourners also lined the streets outside the tribute, some remembering rosalynn carter as a trailblazer. >> this is history right here. >> she's a wonderful role model. >> reporter: later today, multiple federal and local law enforcement agencies are expected to line the funeral procession route as mrs. carter's casket makes its final journey through her hometown to and from the baptist church where family and friends will attend a private funeral. now that's the same church where president carter taught sunday school until fairly recently. their home is just a few minutes down the road from here. after they have the funeral services, they're going to move the casket to their home, and that's where she will be interned later today. anne-marie?

highway. police say the plane was approaching an airport near minneapolis yesterday when it lost power. the plane clipped some power lines before colliding with a car. the driver and the pilot, though, only suffered minor injuries. subpoenas were served in the maui wildfire investigation, and a plea deal for alex murdaugh. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the state" says alex murdaugh was sentenced to 27 years in prison for financial crimes. in a deal with prosecutors, the former south carolina attorney pleaded guilty to stealing about $12 million from clients and his law firm -- his family law firm, rather. in court yesterday murdaugh apologized to his victims, his family, and his former co-workers. he's already serving a life sentence for killing his wife and youngest son. he is appealing that conviction. the "honolulu star register"

says three agencies were served subpoenas after their response in the honolulu wildfire. 100 people were killed and thousands lost their homes. officials say the agencies received the subpoenas for not meeting deadlines to turn over information. the head of the emergency management department resigned after being criticized for not sounding emergency sirens. and "the des moines register" says the aclu and a civil rights organization are suing to block a new iowa law. the law restricts schools from teaching about lgbtq topics and bans library books depicting sex acts. the measure has drawn heated protests since it was signed into law earlier this year. the lawsuit was filed on behalf of eight students, their families, and an lgbtq advocacy group. still to come, taking the wheel. surveillance video captures a runaway bus. how a student inside jumpd into action to avert disaster. sfx: [alarm clock ringing] sfx: [thunder] sfx: [email notification]

a multibillion dollar deal is reportedly in the works for dallas mavericks owner mark cuban to sell a majority stake in the franchise to the family that runs the las vegas sands casino company. cuban would still be in charge of basketball operations. the deal will likely take several weeks to get league approval. say hi once again to bye-bye baby. the retailer has reopened 11 stores, mostly in the new york metropolitan area. stores shuttered for three months after parent company bed bath and beyond went bankrupt. over 100 stores are in the works. a virgin atlantic boeing 787 safely landed at jfk airport powered only by sustainable fuel. it was the first transatlantic flight to use sustainable aviation fuel. this was just a test flight with no paying customers. that's your cbs "money watch" report. i'm wendy gillette, cbs, new york.
