from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. a case of road rage in san jose. how it landed a dog in emergency care. a growing crisis in bay area animal shelters. so many to care for and space is running out. the peninsula humane society is here to talk about ways that you can help. it is a side of homelessness you may not see. students without a permanent place to stay. you will meet a family who is sharing their story. i'm ryan yamamoto in for elizabeth cook . let's start with a look at headlines. police have arrested a suspect for road rage in san jose. they

witnessed at this video last week on capital expressway. police say the suspect jumped on the victim's car, smashing the rear window. investigators say glass fell into the eye of a dog in the back seat and it received emergency medical care. the suspect faces charges including animal abuse. the richmond chevron refinery has received four violation notices from the bay area air quality management district. this comes after the flaring that sent some smoke into the air on monday. three violations were purposeful omissions. one was for a public nuisance violation. the air district says more violations may be issued as that investigation continues. santa clara county announced his candidacy today for the district 16 seat. he has served as a supervisor to the county for a little over a decade. she announced she would not run for election next year.

first alert weather right now. the rain has moved out. we did see more showers tomorrow. meteorologist jessica burch has a look. >> we woke up this morning with some rainy conditions widespread as an area of low pressure wrung out energy over us. i will show you rainfall totals in the second. watch what happens through our friday forecast. showers make their way into the north, really unsettled over the next couple of days which could amount to 1 inch down near petaluma. let me drop this monitor and show you what we got this morning. in certain areas, we got almost a half inch of rain. san francisco. the more in the and we got, the less impressive. a quarter inch of rain fell near oakland, less impressive numbers over near antioch and the more south we go, the santa clara valley barely got anything at all. match that with what we are expecting into the afternoon and daytime highs today widespread throughout the bay area. it is a mild cool day with a little bit of rain this

morning. across the bay, animal shelters are filling up with some or even overcapacity right now. joining me right now is puppy martin with the peninsula humane society. thank you for being here. let's talk about what the conditions are your organization is seeing now and how it has changed over the last few years her last few months. >> peninsula humane society is based in burlingame on the peninsula. we have seen an increase in a lot more animals than we normally have during this time of year. normally this is our quieter season where we might have animals available for adoption but not quite the volume, especially cats and large dogs as well, and snakes. >> snakes? >> we have a lot of pet snakes available for adoption. >> i would not have thought

about a reptile. why are you seeing so many animals now? >> we don't know. there is some hypothesis that there could be that there is a lack of availability for low cost spay and neuter services. we do operate a low cost spay and neuter clinic but we are one of the few in the area that does. we can handle the intense amount of need to provide these services for people and to help reduce pet population. that is part of it. we know we are not the only shelter in the bay area or even the united states that is dealing with this. but, we will continue to care for these animals. we will find homes for them. that is why we are running a bunch of different adoption promotions throughout the holiday season. >> you were mentioning that you have seen a lot of large on this. any type of specific cats or any type of reads? >> just the large dogs. a lot of huskies. a lot of pit bulls. a lot of shepherd mixes. a lot of that is that large dogs require more activity, perhaps more space. maybe landlords may

not be open to having a larger dog. some place restrictions on weight like you can only have a dog that is 20 pounds or less. certainly many of the dogs that we have that have been waiting for their dogs for quite a while are a little on the bigger side. >> i can testify. i had an 80 pound golden retriever at one point. what is the best way for people to begin the adoption process and how are you cringing -- encouraging to adopt now? >> you can visit our website and you can look at the available animals that we have. as i mentioned earlier, we just don't have cats and dogs, we have bunnies, reptiles, birds. if you are interested in a more exotic type pet, definitely check us out. we are open seven days a week, located at 1450 rawlings road in burlingame 11:00 a.m. until 6 pm every day

except major holidays. you can pop in and see our available animals at the shelter, look at them online. fill out the application, chat with our adoption counselors to determine what it is you are looking for when you are looking to add a new family member to your home. what is your living condition? do you live in a small apartment? perhaps a large dog may not be best for you. in terms of cats, right now , we are offering 50% up adoption fees for all cats six months or older and for our large dogs , we are also offering an adoption promotions special, 50% off all adoption fees of dogs that weigh 50 pounds or more. and, our snakes are free as well. free to appropriate homes. just because we offer these promotions doesn't mean we won't still follow our very strict and

rigorous adoption process to make sure that these animals are going into the best appropriate home. just a reminder. i know it is the holidays and people get really excited to have animals during the holidays. when you are adopting an animal, it is for life, not just the december holiday. please keep that in mind. >> i live in a small apartment. maybe i can convince my wife to get a snake. >> or a bunny. >> she would get the snake. thank you for being with us. >> thank you so much. it is an often hit inside of homelessness. why an oakland dad and his son decided to bring their story to life. chocolate is a multibillion dollar industry here in the u.s. but cbs news is learning

goli, taste your goals. when you think about people who are homeless, what comes to mind? leon houston population carries a lot of stigma. drug encampments on the streets and there is often truth to that but there is another group we don't think about. they are the children who still go to school but are living in temporary housing and cars or going from one hotel to the next. they describe their living situation is embarrassing but one oakland father and his two sons decided

they did not want their situation to stay hidden any longer. or juliette goodrich reports, they wanted to bring their struggle to the surface. >> reporter: david nesn and is two sons are living at the east oakland community project shelter. >> we get a hot breakfast and a lunch packed in with the breakfast and we get a hot dinner. >> that has not always been the case, especially during the pandemic. >> my son missed one year of school because we had nowhere to go. our days consisted of us trying to find somewhere to sleep and eat, living out of our car. >> they are amongst a group hidden in plain sight. the number of homeless students attending oakland unified schools grew nearly 70% over the last three years, up to 1780 students in 2023. prior to the pandemic, the numbers hovered around 1000.

>> for a while, i felt like we lived in the shadows. everybody else was in color and we lived in black and white. we did not come out too much during the day. it was embarrassing. >> a lot of our families are hidden. they are the hidden homeless. our kids don't want to be outed. >> trish anderson runs the office at oh usd. it provides resources to unhoused students. anderson's office includes herself, three case managers and an academic counselor. this binder represents hundreds of unhoused families . it is broken into three-tier groups. >> tier 3 is our most at risk. they are using hotel and motel, in the car or encampment, or bouncing around from place to place. >> tier 3 ranges anywhere from 100 to 230 right now. we are hovering around 230 families.

>> david and his sons are in tier 3. >> this is home. we have been here for about 13 months. we are all in one room. four bunks, me and the boys. we share a restroom with a neighbor. >> families can come and get snacks, clothes, shoes and even rest. >> everything they need to go to school, we try to provide it. >> anderson says her goal is to remove barriers for a child to access education. they provide school supplies, glasses to read, toiletries and help families replace lost or stolen birth certificates during all of their moves, removing hurdles for families like david estes and his two sons who face even bigger challenges outside the classroom. >> if you are looking for ways to help , the program is taking

donations. they tell us they need more clothes including coats, hats, scarves and gloves. you can drop off those donations at 746 grand avenue importable a. you can also donate money to the program that provides a range of services to homeless students in oakland. we posted a link in the story on our website at www.kpix.com. san jose is working to cleanup homeless encampments, graffiti and other so-called blight from key parts of the city. mayor matt mahan says he wants to give visitors a better first impression of san jose by improving and cleaning several high visibility and high traffic gateways into the city. >> first impressions matter. for far too long, the first impression of our downtown has been insufficient. there has been too much trash, weeds, encampments. it has not given people the sense of a city that is on the rise. that is what san jose is. >> san jose is the fastest growing city in california

since the pandemic, third fastest overall in the nation. today's project is the first of 11 planned projects all across san jose. bank of america will be closing two dozen locations across the bay area. the bank tells us because clients are using digital banking more often, they have been adjusting their retail network when centers are close together or when client traffic has gone down. they say the closures represent a small percentage of their local bank presence. general motors will cut back on spending on cruise. after a car hit and dragged a pedestrian after she was first struck by another car. the dmv claims the company withheld the video of that accident. and you have a google account that you have not used in the last two years but you

do want to keep it, you will need to sign back into it before the end of the week. otherwise, the company will deactivate it. google says it is meant to protect users from security threats like hijacked accounts. now to an exclusive investigation. coming up on the evening news, the american chocolate giant mars did more than $45 million in sales last year. there may be a dark truth behind your favorite chocolate bar. the cbs evening news travel to west africa and found children as young as age 5 harvesting the cocoa that ends up in those chocolates. deborah potter worked on this investigation and joins me now. what did you find out in your investigation? >> reporter: we visited the remote cocoa farms and west gonna. we found the biggest chocolate companies. think of

america's best love chocolates. despite claims by mars that it will eradicate child labor from its supply chain for 2025, we found children working on every farm we visited, children as long as five years old doing terribly dangerous labor, toiling and sweltering temperatures, children that mars claims are part of a child labor rehabilitation program, a program that is intended to keep children off plantations and in schools instead. here's the thing. children supposedly in school were not there and we spoke to many children who longed to go to school but simply cannot afford it. they must find work or face starvation. >> thank you. we are looking forward to the full story tonight.

we are clearing up after more overnight and morning showers and parts of the bay area. meteorologist jessica burch is here with what we've got. >> we had a huge area of low pressure sweep throughout the bay area. we saw heavy showers in certain pockets, not so much into the santa clara valley. watch how the numbers get more impressive as we head north along 101. we have about a half inch of rain that fell on these early morning hours. here is the good news. we are clearing up this afternoon. partly cloudy skies for the rest of the day today. we have trace amounts of showers expected in the next couple of days. let me show you one futurecast what that will look like for us. the rest of the day today, we will see the clouds move away into the east and then we wake up with cloudier conditions. here comes the next system into thursday afternoon. scattered showers from the north to the south.

snow in the sierra clears up thursday and then we are left with mild conditions. let me show you what is going on through the next couple of days. for the most part, we are in the 60s. 60s in the forecast from san francisco into oakland. yesterday we were in the upper 60s into santa rosa but today, 64 degrees. pretty much widespread throughout the bay area. no matter where you live, you will need a jacket or some layers handy. 65 today. it will be a beautiful one this afternoon. for the next seven days, holding on tight to the 60s. we have a chance of showers tomorrow afternoon. for the most part, moving in from the north and south. some of us will see more shower activity compared to others. some of us might not even experience any

at all. low 60s into next week before we start to warm up with partly cloudy skies in the forecast. this weekend, the 49ers traveled to philadelphia to face up with the eagles. it is one of the nfl's most anticipated games of the season. the 49ers are downplaying their rematch with the eagles this sunday. deebo samuel said it is just another game. what happened last year in the nfc championship is old news but philly is having fun with the hype and adding to a. a. j. brown posted eagles fans, it is troll deebo samuel week. you have my permission. deebo was asked about his mention on the podcast. >> i called aj out. i was like, come on, bro. that is my guy. at the end of the day, he is just joking around but i did

the donate life float at the rose parade pays lives to donors. this new year's day , a san francisco father will be honored along with the family of a teen who gave him a new heart. in 2020, he received a heart transplant from 18-year-old joe barrett of concord. the teen was walking home from the library when he was killed by a hit-and-run driver in 2019. joe had signed up to be an organ donor on his drivers license. >> a son did not check off that box, there is a good chance i would not be here. >> joe's heart went to the perfect person. >> since that transplant, ted and joe's mother have become like family. the barrett family was also presented with a floral portrait of joe which will be placed on the float on new year's day. latin music lovers, listen up. details on a new festival coming to the bay area
