this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. it is the day of the great debate. red state versus blue state. two governors with very different philosophies of governing it will be a preview of what is to come >> in one corner, governor newsom, the other, desantis, they will go head-to-head on the debate stage. we are breaking down why now and what they each hope to get out of this. good afternoon to you i'm elizabeth cook. we are diving deeper into that much anticipated debate between governors newsom and ron desantis. a bay area political expert is here to weigh in on all of this. first, let's get you caught up on today's news

headlines. former san jose mayor filed paperwork to run for congress according to the mercury news. this comes a week after they announce she will not seek re-election next year. he has not decided if he is going to run. he spent the last year as a public policy advisory and stanford lecture are. if er. if you are thinking of shopping local, they are promising to beef up security throughout the city throughout the holiday shopping rush. bay area ferries are getting $22 million from the feds. the san francisco bay ferry is getting most of the money, $16 million to be exact to help them push forward to electrify the fleet. it will be

used to give four ferries at the main street terminals and the san francisco ferry building itself. all right o to first alert weather now. windy, mild, or a chance of showers. it is depending where you are at. a mixed bag around the pay area today. here is our meteorologist with a closer look. >> throughout the bay area today we are sitting in the lower 60s for our forecast unless you are down in the santa clara valley. the winds will stay light for us today. this afternoon, the rest of us, we will see gustier conditions throughout the afternoon hours along the coast and wind speeds around 30, 35 miles for hour near half moon bay, into the coastline near san francisco just along the pacific shoreline. as we head into this afternoon day time highs are sitting in the lower 60s in the north bay. cooler than where we were at two days ago. as we take a look at what is happening this afternoon we have a splash of showers in the forecast for us, it times out around 3:00, 4:00 in the north bay. sweeping its way are to

the south bay. we will see about 1/100th of an inch of rain there and it clears up into the overnight hours, lingering showers up in the north bay through the next couple of days. we will keep you updated on that unsettled weather pattern heading into this weekend. just a few hours from now california governor newsom and florida governor desantis will take center stage in a nationally televised debate. the two could not be more different from each other and how they run their states but they have not been shy on each other's opinions. >> he has been on a book banning binge. 40% of books have been banned in his state. banning speech, criminalizing teachers and librarians. >> the debate which state is governed better florida or california it has been decided by people voting with their feet >> governor is not vying for the democratic presidential nomination, desantis, however, is in the running on the gop

side. a messenger poll shows desantis with 9% of support in the republican primary. far behind the front-runner, former president donald trump who had 68%. and close behind desantis was former u.n. ambassador nikki haley with 7%. joining me today is sonoma political state, thank you for being here >> pleasure to be with you. everyone will be watching this debate. why are they doing it, though? it seems like it comes to debates there is not really a winner but there is a loser, why do it now? >> it fills the political void. there is a debate next week no one will watch or listen to. donald trump ahead 50 or 60 points depending what poll you look at. it is a chance for desantis to look passed if you will for the gop what comes next and for newsom it is an opportunity to be back on the national stage to fill that void he did for democrats in

the wake of the dobbs. he will serve for the biden campaign, that looks good and speaking to donors indirectly and that is an important key element. it raises the stature of both in a time that it has been a little bit kind of lost in terms of what is going on in politics given events in the middle east. >> so, newsom is really, do you think he is really running for what will happen in the next four years? >> he is really running by not running, running by not running is what he is doing. that is the strategy. if you think of his veto messages and what he did in the last couple of months after the slew of bills, he talked about being a parent and how important that was. that allows him to talk about transgender issues, books, banning books, culture wars, allows him to take on things that decantis and his team think are strengths and for newsom it allows him to moderate a little bit in terms of where he is going and what he is doing because he is speaking from the heart as a parent. it will be interesting to watch that and allows him to

pivot to reproductive politics, rights, what is happening on school boards, around what we see going on across the country. that will be fascinating knocking heads after that. >> as a viewer how should we watch it? looking at the issues? looking at their performance? >> they each have different things coming out of it. goff over desantis reboot the flagging campaign. newsom talk about himself and not think of himself and not come across to viewers as someone who is like this knee jerk san francisco liberal. nancy pelosi successful but you don't want to come across that. they have different things they are moving forward and the degree they join on the culture wars and throw out their one-liners. sometimes desantis can be awkward on tv. he throws out a line that lands flat. it has happened in multiple debates and newsom is not speaking from notes. sometimes he is not good off of the stump and tends to go into the details, the trees in the forest. they have to each check each other as they are doing this and obviously

the host will keep this flowing along. it will be fascinating to watch this. >> yes. i want to ask a question about desantis, why is he doing this? he knows there is not his strength why sign up to do this? >> he needs to reboot. if you will, kind of give some reassurance to his donors and his backers. look, the republican party will turn past trump at some point. desantis wants to lead that. the democratic party will move passed biden and coalition and newsom and his team want to position himselfs as a new democrat. each is looking forward into 2026, 2028 when people have not voted for 2024 that is all at stake. >> i am curious with gavin newsom is there concern from biden's camp that he is taking away attention from president biden when it comes to his campaign for president next year that he is taking away the luster? >> reporter: all right, so, inside what is going on, there is a concern he is taking it away from the vice president,

california's own kamala harris. you are eclipsing the vice president and what happens with that in the aftermath of this. look, newsom and harris have been political cousins. there is a worry it creates friction moving forward especially as we enter into the fray full throated of the 2024 campaign. that is something to pay attention to. that is much more of a problem for management on what is going on behind-the-scenes than the white house specific concern that governor newsom would eclipse biden. >> any chance, though, hair sis not on the ticket with president biden? >> there is a lot that can happen between now and the convention. there is a lot of events that can unfold. this is really a topsy turvy season. unprecedented debate. we used that term like crazy. but unprecedented times where anything can happen. if donald trump does not do well in iowa but it looks like he will, or new hampshire, his campaign is

on the ropes, nikki haley, and trump will not sit it out. there is a lot to go in terms of what happens in the next couple of weeks and months before we get there. >> do you think governor newsom is doing a good job for the rest of the country he is not just a san francisco liberal politician? >> yes and no. there are problems with specific demographics, african american woman particularly they do not have high marks with. you are going to need that demographic if you want to be president of the united states and you are a democrat. you have to go after latinos, latinas, hispanic vote, hugely important in florida. segments of the vote they will have to mediate their stances as they move forward and that will be fascinating. we are in a huge shift especially heading into 2026-2028. >> all right. thank you so much. it will be very interesting to watch no question. >> thank you very much. >> all right. still ahead, meet a bay area hospital food director

. the east bay is learning self-defense. they say they refuse to become crime victims. in 2022 more than 16,000 seniors in california were victims of violent crime. the majority of them robberies and aggravated assaults. it is a 150% increase since 2000. so, how can seniors protect themselves? they are using something they already have on them every day. >> don't let the slow stride and the wooden cane fool you. >> i feel much more empowered. >> reporter: because at nearly eight decades old. >> 77 years old. >> he is ready to defend himself with what he calls his medical device. >> it is a tool for self-defense. wood canes seek bone. >> reporter: it is a journey that began 20 years ago when a

brain injury left him weak on his left side. >> i i was actually walking with a cane. i saw an advertisement in the paper that there was a master teaching self-defense using canes. so, i decided i am going to check it out. >> reporter: today. he is master dextimer. you are an easy target. >> one of his star pupils is 87-year-old who says she used to be shy and timid. >> i was always aware. and, really, uncomfortable because i always felt like i would be a

victim. today she showed me what would happen if she ever got attacked. >> we just lost bob. >> you guys get to pick him up. >> now, someone messes with me i will disable them. >> stop, leave me alone! >> reporter: and the class is not just about using the cane. students. >> stop! >> stop! >> reporter: they are taught. >> stop! >> reporter: to use their voice. >> you use that same kind of voice with somebody who is coming at you, it makes them sit up and pay attention. >> reporter: so, next time you see someone walking a little slow, and with a cane, don't be fooled. in the end it may be the would-be attacker who looks like the dummy. >> right now he has eight students in antioch and oakley. he plans to start a third class in dublin early next year. ♪

. kpix is, once again, partnering with local food banks for our annual food for bay area families drive. ark cording to second harvest of silicone valley, 44% of college students will experience food insecurity to some degree. we are introduced to a plan who lived through the reality and now found a career where his main job is to make sure people are fed. keep within washington hospital in fremont, matthew heads into his office. he gears up for a trip through what is effectively the central nervous system of the hospital's food and nutrition services operation. and there is no detail that he misses. the hospital's director of food and nutrition services. >> we serve anywhere from 400 to 600 trays for day.

>> reporter: for patients, staff, guests, any others who are at the hospital who need to eat. he takes pride in being able to feed others. there was a point in his life where he was in need of a helping hand. >> to seek help is not shameful. >> reporter: while in college at san jose state he experienced food insecurity firsthand. >> it was not, no, not easy. you have to decide i have this part-time job and i need gas, do i go to the grocery store and buy $ft. worth of groceries or do i pay $40 and put gas in my car. >> reporter: he linked up to second harvest. he got a helping hand he worked to make it more would not have to experience what he was. >> to be having a problem as foundational as lack of access to food. really t is something that, you know, should ignite us all to want to work together to kind of address and solve that problem. >> reporter: the need is growing in the pay area says a

leader at second harvest of silicone valley. >> so we here at second harvest of silicone valley are serving half a million people every month. that is one in six people in san mateo county. >> reporter: that is double how many pre-pandemic. >> the leave of food insecurity it is just incredible. >> reporter: here, you see workers and volunteers packing boxes with fresh produce and food. ready to go out to people in need this holiday season. >> this is not your old style food banking people think about that is left over canned of foods. this is good healthy food. >> reporter: but food insecurity is a year around problem. >> we will work hard to make sure that we can meet folks needs. >> in the bay area it is a huge problem that we face. the only way we are going to be able to overcome that is coming
