university didn't waste time starting to raise the land. [ chanting ] >> people's park! >> that's a piece of people's history that is known internationally around the world, and it's one of the things that people know berkeley for. >> roads are also blocked off around the park. protesters got as close as they could, facing off with riot police for hours. to really understand why this is such a big deal, you need to go all the way back to the late 1960s. that's when the university first bought the 2.8-acre plot of land to build dorms. it sat as a vacant lot and became a magnet for anti-war protesters who used it for gatherings and demonstrations. but when the university tried to build on it in 1969, protests exploded. one person was killed, and those clashes spilled onto campus. fast forward to know. even though the university has

control over the park, our andrea nakano reports there's another battle that could still stop it from actually building on the land. >> reporter: we are about two blocks away from people's park, and much of the area has been closed off to the public. hundreds of police officers from the university police department to the california highway patrol are here to keep these closures in place. it feels like there are more officers in the neighborhood than they are residents as uc berkeley moves ahead with a plan to build housing at people's park. >> it's intimidating having police cars all around your house. >> reporter: this man lives inside the barricaded zone, and says for the most part it's been easy to get in and out with proof of residency. he says over the years he's noticed changes at people's park. >> i've been here for like six years now. i've been a student since 2018. i mean, it is a

little like scary. >> reporter: according the a spokesperson with uc berkeley, the effort to stack shipping containers around the park was carefully planned to minimize the disruption to neighbors and for safety. >> since we stopped enforcing the no camping rule because of the pandemic, it's become the center of serious crime. more often than not, it's the unhoused people targeted by the crime. >> reporter: some residents, though, are disappointed by the way the university and the city has handled the transition of the landmark. >> there is a little touch of, of, i wouldn't say pain, but it's like, um, hurt. >> reporter: stacey hill says he remembers being here in the 1960s when the park was a hot bed of social activism. on a personal note, this was where his aunt started going into labor. >> history. it's history. >> reporter: the university says roughly 60% of the site will remain an open green space. the rest will be a

combination of student and very low income housing. while the need for student housing is critical, some wonder what kind of impact the project will have. >> the rents are pretty high up here. and like, maybe if they build a new one there it might relieve the housing cost. or it might increase the housing cost, you know, because it becomes a better place to live. >> reporter: these barricades will remain in place until fencing is put in around the shipping containers. no word on when that will be done. as for when the actual construction will begin, the state supreme court needs to weigh in on an appeal of a ruling by the university which is blocking the project from moving forward. >> uc berkeley currently houses only 23% of its students. that's the lowest percentage out of ten uc campuses. now we want to turn to oakland where three men arrested in connection with a killing of an oakland police officer faced a judge and the officer's family for the first time today. mark sanders is

the golden gate bridge is known for its stunning views of the bay all over the world. but tonight it has a new look and an important function that goes along with it. it's taken decades, but the new suicide prevention nets are finally finished. the stainless steel mesh nets were made to withstand the salty ocean air. if you fall in them, it's designed to save you, but it will hurt. >> the design of the net is inspired by similar net designs on tall buildings and bridges across the world that are deterrents. they're designed to be painful. it provides a

we'll be tracking the more substantial rain event, that's overstating it, it will be passing showers on saturday. the bulk of the heavier rain will be further north. most of the moisture really concentrated in the sierra with a good chance of snow. more on that momentarily. the rain that moves in will move into the north baby the morning. dropping into san francisco by lunchtime, early afternoon, and then rolling through the santa clara valley and pretty much out before the sun goes down saturday evening. we'll see a chance of maybe a couple of lingering showers after that band of rain moves out. but it's not going to be a substantial rain maker for us. barely enough to help us keep pace with where we're supposed to be for this time of year. same for the southern half of the bay area. just enough to mess with outdoor plans saturday. and the winds pick up as the cold front driving rain moves through. by saturday afternoon, we'll have 15 to 25 miles per hour gusts. not strong enough for a wind
