the building. >> reporter: the good samaritans helping former convicts land on their feet and lounge in their homes. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey. just a day after a massive avalanche killed one skier and swept three other people down the slopes at palisades tahoe there has been a second slide at the ski area, this time on the alpine meadows side of the mountain. thankful low this time no one was hurt thankfully this time no one was hurt, a skier said that was there >> it could have been us, buried in the pile, it was deep, it was big, it is a wake up call. >> now, resorts are rushing to do avalanche control ahead of

the holiday weekend. a helicopter pilot saw warning signs when he flew over the place where yesterday's deadly slide happened >> we had new snow last night. look at the right side of your screen, that was avalanche activity right there to the right, likely some of the avalanche control with crews trying to stabilize the hillside after last night's snow, not only the snow that fell but the snow that was transported by the highway winds that we saw over the sierra. those are all concerns in avalanche terrain. >> that shot gave you an idea of the volume of all of that snow. what happens when there is an avalanche? we teamed up with first responders to find out how they prepare. >> reporter: wherever an avalanche happens here in the tahoe area, multiple agencies respond. we talked to those

here at north lake tahoe fire about how it works >> this a backpack that you should carry in the backcountry, it has a shovel and it as an air bag. >> reporter: this is just some of the gear they prepare when responding for an avalanche. north lake tahoe protection district, most all firefighters in the area are trained in avalanche rescue. >> we have a lot of different ways to get back to the patient. a lot of the times we will use snowshoes, it all depends. >> reporter: overall, he says avalanches are rare. when they do happen they usually occur at a backcountry not a ski resort. >> ski patrols do a lot to mitigate avalanche danger, they use hand charges, they ski cut, they go in and evaluate. there are a lot of ways inside of the ski area. in the backcountry, that is not available >> it is rare to get caught up in an avalanche. the forest

service says the best thing to do is keep up with the forecast and avoid skiing alone. back here in the bay area a two-county police shooting that shutdown streets for hours. a wood fence ended it near gateway drive. the napa county sheriff's department says that same car took off when police and person canyon tried to pull it over for a code violation. we don't know what led up to the shootout. one man was taken to the hospital. investigators say officers that combed the area with k-9s arrested a suspect and recovered two guns. a i fremont police chase came to a crashing end near the coliseum. our chopper caught a person being led a way after a crash into a pylon. a growing number of bay area communities and businesses have been relying heavily on private security as opposed to the police to keep them safe. in 2021, residents in san

francisco's marina were fed up with car break ins some hired private security to patrol their streets. the city is considering reviving the patrol special squad, a for hire private security service dating back to the gold rush. and this summer we reported on pg&e crews hiring off duty police officers to watch over their workers in oakland because they were targeted for their tools. now, the city of antioch just approved funding for private security because businesses have been asking for help. as our andrea nakano reports it is not just to stop break ins it is to curve another crime keeping them away from downtown. >> reporter: businesses say it used to be a vibrant area. after break ins and other crime issues, some stores decided to close their doors, those that are left are desperately asking the city for help to curb crime. >> reporter: kathy has lived in antioch for the last 25 years,

just four years ago she opened k-9 11 animal rescue. >> reporter: we need the city to be safe again. >> reporter: some of her fellow business owners experienced burglaries, she adds sideshows are also a big problem in antioch. >> the sideshows get out of hand in the parking lot next door to my building. sometimes they get so loud and crazy i am afraid they will go through the wall. >> reporter: city councilmember heard the roys from the community and pushed for private security guards to help patrol the downtown area. >> they are basically going to be down here as a deterrent and as eyes and ears of the police department. rose these will be unarmed guards tasked with overseeing the riverfront and the parking lots where some of the sideshows happen. >> no one wants a security guard taking action on their own. we want them to identify what the issues are and then take those issues to the police department through our dispatch center. >> reporter: this restaurant

just opened last november. the owner welcomes the extra patrols to make her customers feel safe. >> this is very important for the people that is coming. >> reporter: this comes as roughly half of the officers with antioch police department were put on leave in connection with the racist text scandal. she wants the bad cops to be punished but feels that the city needs the police >> they need to bring police officers back. those that are cleared they need to put them back to work. come help us keep this community safe. one security guard is not going to do it. >> this is expected to cost the city $150,000 and it will last through the fiscal 2024-2025 year. waves on the east coasts have been so powerful this home might as well have been a dollhouse. getting out of prison is just the first step in a very

. there is a lot of debate over if the prison system, the way it is set up now, gives people a chance at a fresh start or it sets them up for failure. one huge hurdle is where to go once they get out. the state department of corrections says more than 60% of inmates released from california prisons will reoffend within three years, but, the new program aims to give former prisoners fitting at the outside world through the generosity of strangers bringing them in their own homes. >> reporter: for 17 years he s

hardworking, loyal, grateful. >> hosts receive $45 a day that comes out to be $14 a month. all participants are vetted by the organization. >> people who have been incarcerated are 10 times more likely to be homeless. >> reporter: the director of the homecoming project. she says 100% of participants graduate the program with affordable housing. 95% end up with a job. most importantly none have gone back to prison. >> the homecoming project is about humanizing everyone. it is about folks that are in the community that is a i have a spare room and i want to do something to help people who need a hand up. >> marcus has his own room but his own desk and a closet. he has his own bathroom for the first time in two decades. >> when you don't have to share it with 12 other people and it is a good thing.

rosa. that is data from the north bay. your temperatures are dipping down to 40 degrees as well. middle 30s as well. we will see 30s on a widespread for inland parts with 40s along the bay and coast. sounds cold but it is 3-6 degrees below average. it is a chilly time of the year. we will still warm up to near average temperatures despite that chilly start. upper 50s in san jose. you will be the warm spot tomorrow afternoon. a couple degrees below average. that is the theme for the bay area. a degree or two below normal. in the middle portion of the 50s. we see rain chances moving in on saturday, moving out on sunday, driveway weather continuing next week, we will stay, everybody within 3-4 degrees of each other and everybody within a degree or two of what is normal for january. let's get to the turbulent part of the forecast and the rain chances headed our way with a look at future cast. tonight, tomorrow, gradual thickening of the cloud cover

over head. filtered sunshine, then, obscure by the dense clouds, the showers start to try to move into the north bay tomorrow night. we will be seeing showers to begin the day on saturday. it does not last for the bay area. it does have breaks in between. unsettled day overall, then, tracking heavier rain, dropping north to south from late saturday afternoon into saturday evening and that will be with gusty winds as well. it will move out of the santa clara valley by midnight on saturday night and dry out for the second half of the weekend. how much rain are we talking about in general, half an inch to an inch of rainfall. for much of the bay area, it will fall to the north bay. steadier rain throughout the bay. then the heavier rain moving through. close to an inch, an inch and a half, there

is a chance for flood prone or flood spots, we have to track the winds as we head through the day. the winds will pick up heading towards noon. the gusty positions, the band of heavy rain moving through late afternoon, evening, 20-30 mile-an-hour gusts, then the winds will relax heading into sunday morning. in the sierra, it will be another snow maker, winter storm warning, goes into effect at 7:00 tomorrow. the snow will not ramp up until sunrise, it travels in that direction saturday, saturday night, we are saying, don't go, u.s 50, i-80, difficult if not treacherous or impassable with another foot or two of snow with gusty winds, at the lower end of the scale but it is still something that will bring widespread rain and a threat of a little bit of wind damage here and there. 20-30 mile-an-hour gusts, be prepared for power outages in you are in a neighborhood that is prone
