adriana diaz. >> good evening. thank you for joining us. adriana is off. tonight, we're getting a sense o what could be the longest general election campaign in history. president biden is in south carolina. the first time democrats are beginning their primaries in the south and the first opponent is in nevada where republicans hold their next contest. it's the first time we've seen president donald trump since he was ordered by a new york jury to pay 83 million dollars. christina is outside the white house where both men would like to live in for the next four years. >> reporter: reserving most of his fire for the current occupant of the oval office. appearing at a sports venue in las vegas today, former president trump took aim at

current president joe biden. >> under president biden we are dying. >> reporter: ahead of the first 2024 democratic primary. it's the state of the u.s. border dominating the newspapers. >> this is an invasion of our country. >> reporter: the former president has stepped in to try to stop it. >> a lot of the senators are trying to, respectfully blaming me. that's okay. i'd rather have no bill than a bad bill. >> reporter: some are fighting back. >> this is the most leverage i have seen us have. >> reporter: saying if passed the president says it will be the toughest and fairest bill in history giving him the power to shut down the border. >> reporter: will it be a mess

or casualty of the campaign. >> christina, thank you. for more of those potential changes of border security we turn to our reporter who covers for immigration for cbs news. in the border eagle pass, texas. how would the border changes affect migrants actually trying to cross the border? >> reporter: ed, it would be a dramatic policy change for anyone trying to get across, trying to effectively shut down asylum processing here where there is a spike of illegal crossings and back to mexico across the rio grand and make asylum entries harder to pass something they hope will deter migrants from coming to the u.s. the state of texas and biden administration are involved in an extraordinary legal showdown. the texas national guard defies demands of allowing in a public

against hamas since early december. across a short stretch of open farmland we come to a stop. >> reporter: we're just 200 yards into gaza itself and crossed into the same breach in the fence hamas militants launched through in order to launch their attacks that day. from this very spot. we were shown the access to the extensive tunnel system that runs more than 450 miles. troops say this opening allowed hamas' explosive teams to reach and breach the border fence undetected. a soldier kept his rifle aimed at the tunnel just in case. we drove deeper into the territory toward the besieged city, through upscale neighborhoods hardly a building left untouched mostly leveled by weeks of israel bombardment. the sound of gunfire and explosions in the distance, some

tonight, pet shelters across the country are struggling with overcrowding. nearly 1 in 5 households adopted a pet during the pandemic, but the intake of stray dogs is up nearly 25% since 2021. some must be put down to ease the crisis. in tonight's weekend journal, cbs's amanda tells us how a california woman is doing her part to save lives one dog at a time. >> reporter: just a short time ago this playful pup's life had an end date. she had 14 days until she would be euthanized. >> she was the sweetest most friendly dog. how could this dog be put down.

>> reporter: they are dog people. it was their first rescue. >> i was nervous because a lot of times you don't know what you're going to get. >> reporter: they were an advocate to find a place for a home. that's where this comes in. the highest kill rate at shelters, brittany is the mind and heart behind this. >> we do our best we can to advocate for specific dogs at the shelter. >> reporter: a nonprofit organization providing education and advocacy for animals. one part of their mission is a focus on dogs that need to be placed out of the shelter or they will be put down. >> they're not bad dogs. we do our best to relay that accurate information and do our best of those who might not be >> reporter: it makes niece stories go viral and hopes the right person sees it, simply a

group of people who share frost funds instagram post. it's working. since they started this last year, 13 dogs have been saved. one of those dogs was named as snicker doodle and now known as -- she had been taken to be adopted and then rendered by an elderly couple. when they saw her picture they connected with frost fund and had scheffler assist with the entire process. >> she gives you kiss after kiss after kiss, kind of like thank you for taking me. >> reporter: changing the dog's life and changing theirs. california. when we return, a tempest in a teacup. take it with a grain of salt.
