than a week after a similar incident on another flight. attack on rafah. palestinians say an israel air strike killed dozens in a tent camp. israel says it targeted a hamas compound. good morning. i'm carissa lawson in for anne-marie green. israel says it's investigating the air strikes on the southern city of rafah that sparked a fire at a camp for people who were displaced. palestinian medics say at least 35 people were killed. israel's military confirmed the strike saying it hit a hamas compound and killed two senior militants. and they're looking into reports that civilians were harmed. [ sirens ] the attack comes hours after hamas launched a barrage of rockets that set off air raid sirens as far away as tel aviv for the first time in months. the idf says eight rockets were

fired from the rafah area. many were intercepted, but some pieces fell including one outside an elementary school in central israel. cbs' imtiaz tyab reports from east jerusalem. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a refuge for those fleeing israel's offensive in rafah. the israeli military struck the camp, and the scenes are horrific. a man holding a headless child with the death toll in the dozens. the survivors will likely end up at the nassar hospital in khan younis, one of the only health facilities that slowly returned to service. after it was overrun by the israeli military back in february, now a team from doctors without borders have gotten it back up and running again. >> we need a cease-fire for this hell to stop. >> reporter: for nearly eight months israel has made gaza's hospitals a key target in its

devastating military campaign, insisting it's because hamas fighters are embedded inside. we went with the israeli military to gaza's main al shifa hospital back in november. but the criticism is is that the evidence provided so far is underwhelming, that it doesn't she unequivocally that this was a hamas command center. >> it will take us time. >> this was not just one hamas headquarters, this was at least three headquarters working simultaneously in the city and outside the city. >> reporter: this is a level of detail which we're not seeing, though. if there are three separate command centers but we can't see that. >> it's not something you can see right now. >> reporter: of the 36 medical facilities that the u.n.'s humanitarian affairs office tracks in gaza, only four have not been raided by the israeli military or damaged in strikes. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, east jerusalem.

also we should mention aid trucks started entering gaza from southern israel sunday through a new agreement to bypass the rafah crossing with egypt after israeli forces seized the palestinian side of it earlier this month. another case of extreme turbulence in the air. this time on a qatar airlines plane. 12 people were injured when turbulence struck during food and drink service yesterday. the plane which took off from doha landed safely and as scheduled in dublin. eight people were hospitalized. this comes five days after a british man died of a suspected heart attack after severe turbulence on a singapore airlines flight. dozens of passengers injured are still in bangkok receiving medical treatment. turning to presidential politics, former president donald trump looked to gain support over the holiday weekend making a stop in the swing state

of north carolina where he was met with waves and cheers. he had a rockier reception at the libertarian national convention. cbs' skyler henry has more. >> reporter: nascar fans cheered and waved ahead of former president trump's arrival at the coca-cola 600 race in north carolina, his third visit to the swing state this election cycle. >> 3% every four years. >> reporter: he had speed bumps in d.c. on saturday. trump looking to make gains with libertarian voters was instead met with hecklers. >> the libertarian party should nominate trump for president of the united states. [ booing ] >> reporter: republicans in line with the former president say despite the boos getting in front of different audiences is a good strategy. >> i give him a lot of credit in going to places where republicans have not gone before. if we're going to win this election cycle, we must go where we're not invited. >> reporter: as summer kicks off

the presidential race is heating up as is everything surrounding the likely nominees. this week jurors in trump's so-called hush-money trial in new york will begin their deliberations. if he's found guilty, it would be a first for a former president. >> i'm hoping for a verdict that makes sense which should be a complete acquittal. worst case, if there's politicization, which i'm sure there will be, there should be a hung jury. >> reporter: president biden wrapped a busy weekend including delivering the commencement address at west point where he indirectly jabbed at his predecessor reminding cadets of their oath. >> not to a political party, not to a president, but to the constitution of the united states of america against all enemies foreign and domestic. nation's storm-battered heartland. the powerful storms killed at least 19 people across four states. texas, oklahoma, arkansas, and kentucky. check out this video of a tornado roaring across birch tree, missouri, early sunday evening, sending debris flying into the air as you can see right there. and this aerial video from valley view, texas, shows the utter devastation with homes and businesses obliterated. cbs' astrid martinez joins us now with the very latest developments. astrid, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's been a horrible month for people living in the nation's midsection. the storms moved to the north and east overnight causing damage from tennessee to virginia and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. now aside from the staggering death toll, more than 100 people were hurt in texas alone. a funnel cloud twisted over north texas, part of a strong

storm system that tore apart homes, businesses, and vehicles. frank soltysiak hid in a cooler with some of his neighbors at a mobile home park in sanger, north of dallas. >> i grabbed my dog, we headed for there. and it just -- the -- it was unbelievable the sound of all the destruction. >> reporter: everyone survived as did others who packed into a bathroom at a truck stop at valley view that's torn apart. the mangled metal an example of the storm's power. >> i kid you not, 30 seconds in someone goes, get to the bathroom now! >> reporter: at least seven people including two children were killed, and dozens hurt in cooke county, texas. >> they need your prayers, they need your support, and god willing we will help them rebuild their lives. >> reporter: there were also storm-related deaths in oklahoma where this funnel cloud was spotted near the town of mutual. roofs were torn off homes and vehicles flipped over.

>> we certainly had a violent weather event. >> reporter: more deaths were reported in arkansas. >> house just started to shake violently, and i was like, nope, let's go to the laundry room. >> reporter: throughout the affected states hundreds of thousands lost power. as the system moves east on a busy holiday weekend, around 50 million people from georgia to new jersey are under the threat of more severe weather. now the indianapolis 500 started four hours late because of the strong storms in the area. about 125,000 fans were temporarily evacuated from the stadium. >> so many people across the country affected. astrid martinez in new york. thank you. today those powerful storms move east potentially causing delays for the travel home from the holiday weekend. those storms will bring a risk of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes near the eastern seaboard. storms will begin inland this afternoon and track eastward going through the evening. the greatest risk of tornadoes

remaining world war ii veterans will gather in normandy, france, to mark eight decades since d-day. many are already marking the occasion in special ways as ian lee reports. >> reporter: on june 6th, 1944, the beaches of normandy witnessed the largest sea-born invasion. more than 2,000 americans perished in the water and sand. across the channel this week, british artists etched silhouettes of 80 soldiers on a beach in southern england. >> really want to capture the moment when the sea comes in and washes them out to sea to commemorate those guys and girls who left british shore sadly to never return. >> reporter: nearly 1,500 british soldiers also died that fateful day. veteran peter gower remembers his dad telling him about hitting the beaches as bullets whizzed by. >> all the bullets started hitting the men, and oh, it was just -- it must have been horrific. >> reporter: veterans made the
