will face off in their 1st debate of this election season. so what will each of them bring to the table we'll have a live report from atlanta. and a bay area political expert helps us break down what voters here should be looking for. will have that conversation. in just a few minutes, but 1st a look at your news headlines. and oakland firefighter, apparently drowned off the coast of san diego. the fire chief says 25 year old caden laughing was attend. a firefighter summer olympics. caden was stationed in west oakland and was considered a rise. star in the department. his father was an assistant chief. he died in the line of duty for years ago. his brother is currently in the fire academy and his mother. provides peer support for the department. cadence colleagues learned of his death while responding to this warehouse. fire at would and 24th streets in oakland, it broke out around 10:00 last night and burned for several hours. at the pacific supply. where how firefighters believe the fire started.

outside. and spread to the building. pride. flags are everywhere. you look here in san francisco ahead of what many consider the top pride event in the world. the parade is sunday on market street. but the castro will be rocking with events and crowds. all weekend long. and police say they are ready. >you'll see a lot of police officers. both at the parade at the festival at the parade. tomorrow. fully deployed all across the city. >liz>police chief bill scott said. there are no known threats. but he asked everyone to stay. vigil. all right onto our 1st alert weather. now we are continuing to track a warmup on the way. meteorologist jessica burch shows us how soon those triple digits could return. jess. we have beautiful weather throughout the santa clara valley as we head into this afternoon daytime highs today. are sitting in the 70s. and the 80s anywhere from san jose over in a los cotto's with 80s, off into the east bay throughout this afternoon. now we have a big change in the forecast

within the next 7 days. areas like antioch all the way down into livermore. we're going to see triple digits heading into early next week we'll have more on that coming up in just a bit. let's dive back into today, though, because it's beautiful. this afternoon with some breezy conditions near san francisco and oakland. daytime highs today they're sitting in the 60s and 70s. with 70s and 80s. all the way north across the golden gate bridge. up into marin sonoma and napa as well as we take a look at those wind speeds will notice it mostly along our coastline. getting pretty breezy with about 30 to 35 mile per hour wind gust in areas like gb. down into san francisco. close to around dinnertime. time we continue to watch those windy conditions last into the afternoon hours, especially in our inland areas. but our temperature outlook issued by the climate prediction center is showing well above normal temperatures for the next 6 to 10 days, which leads us up into 4th of july, right around the corner, so let's take a look at the next 7 days starting off with our inland areas where daytime highs will hit the triple digits. as early as next. monday. notice all the sunshine too today and tomorrow we're still holding on tight to the 80s, so enjoy this weather

while we have it. we have 90s, both saturday and sunday. you'll notice that a shift in the weather pattern. it'll be a lot drier. a lot, sunnier, to and of course we hold on. to those those triple digits heading in the next monday tuesday and wednesday. with 4th of july, right around the corner for us, so let's head over to the bay where it's just a little bit cooler and we turn the temperatures down just a notch. suddenly we're talking about 70. in the forecast for us along the bay shore line still with those cool and cloudy conditions especially in the morning hours. lifting into the afternoon with sunny skies once we had in a monday and tuesday of next week, though, we're getting rid of that marine layer. we're going to see plenty of sunshine gearing up. up for 4th of july with hot temperatures right around the corner, too. >liz>tonight's face off between president biden. and former president trump is the earliest general election. presidential debate. and us in us history. both campaigns have spent the

last few days and weeks preparing for what could be a pivotal night. in the race for the white house. skylar henry is in atlanta with a preview. >yeah. >>president biden arrived in atlanta ahead of his debate with former president donald trump were both presumptive nominees will lay their records. out to the american people. made say he plans to paint trump as too dangerous for the white house. will also argue trump would cut taxes for the rich and takeaway abortion, rights. on the republican side. trump's aides are urging him to focus on crime. immigration and the economy. issues. where he leads in the polls. but in the end policies may not be what wins the debate. >many americans are tuning in to see how joe biden looks. and how donald trump act. and do they have the capacity to lead american university. professor jane hall says. in addition to policy talks viewers will be paying attention to both men's energy. and decor, >do you think that either man could really sort of

separate. himself. from the other based off of his performance tonight. i think that performances is fortunately or unfortunately going to be a key factor. and how this is perceived. and how it is perceived in all of the clips that will be that will be out there. political watchers say those performances tonight could land big with undecided voters. >super huge fan of either, but, um just if they're respectful to each other, i feel like that's super important. cbs. news polling shows voters planning to watch the debate live are mostly looking to see how biden and trump perform. with 20%. saying the debate will help them decide how to vote. >live>and unless here's why that's so important. when you look at the margins. and how slim they are especially in battleground. states like georgia. in fact, new cbs news reporting out today shows that several of the battleground states are considered toss ups

with the presumptive nominees. having the competitive edge by 12. to 3% and various states, and so it many of the experts that we spoke with, say that the performances here tonight could very well make. or break the momentum. if you will. in terms of each of their respective campaigns we're in atlanta. i'm skylar henry back to >liz>you. it's going to be really interesting night. you know, we're all going to be watching from home, but you're there. can you tell us about the atmosphere? outside of the debate? location? are people allowed to gather >live>well, we've seen certain crowds in certain places when the president landed here in atlanta. he was met with a delegation of some of the upper officials. top officials if you will here in the city and do well as the state, he also had the opportunity. to meet with about 100 or so of his supporters before heading over to the debate site, which is about a half mile behind me. asked for former president trump, he is just landing here in atlanta. he's going straight

to the debate location. i don't think he's going to have to much time. a really sit and gather with his supporters. but many of those campaigns surrogates including governor gavin newsom, if you will have been fanning out here across atlanta, fanning out across the metro area and on the airwaves and support of their respective canada. encourage those who maybe be teetering in terms of who they should vote for to get out to the polls. and obviously lead in. to either biden or trump, so a lot of energy here. in the state >liz>all right, skyler henry live for us in atlanta. thank you so much, skyler. well, this will be the 1st presidential debate to be held in a studio with no live audience. since kennedy nixon back in 25. each candidate's mike will be muted except for when it's their turn to speak. earlier, i got a chance to speak with cbs news chief election and campaign correspondent robert costa and i asked about this very different format for tonight. >well, when you're watching it tonight. how hey, attention

to whether you hear in interruption. cnn, which is hosting the debate is going to mute the other candidate when the other 1 is speaking. but there will be a bit of an audio. since that you have the idea that someone is trying to interrupt, but you won't hear. verbatim. what? that person is saying. so what this means is the audience at home. is going to hear clearly. what? the person who is supposed to be speaking is saying but that's not going to stop. trump. or biden from interrupting lie. on stage. so you could see the candidates. try to rat rattle each other with interruption. a big element. we know is going to be a big factor in this election is the youth vote, and many of the young people we have spoken to are saying, you know what i don't really like either of these candidates. i don't even know if i'm going to go to the polls, which, of course, is a huge fear. for all of the political parties when it comes to this election, i'm curious that there's going to be a. where you feel like they're going to really try to target those younger voters. >based on my conversations. with the biden campaign. they really know and they april

privately. acknowledge. that some young voters are frustrated with president biden is foreign policy, especially when it comes to israel and its war with hamas. and how the biden administration is handled that issue. and because of that, there's a bit of a muted level of support among some young democrats. some young, independent voters, but to counter that they're not going to change policy. necessarily. but you're going to see a focus on abortion. rights. there was just a supreme court rule. this morning. on that front of focus on abortion rights tonight from president biden to remind younger voters especially those young democrats, who really look at that issue as an important 1 in their voting calculus. he's going to say to them on the candidate who supports reproductive rights support. abortion rights, trump and the republicans are trying to strip away those rights to make more. restrictions, part of what's going on in the states and potentially even at the federal level. >liz>now. i also asked robert, whether we can expect either candidate to go after the others legal issues president trump's recent conviction. and the conviction of president biden, son. hunter.

>inside the biden campaign. there's a belief he needs to bring up trump's criminal conviction in new york he needs to bring up january 6th. why there is a strategic conclusion. that if he brings up those issues, it will perhaps raise some questions. have some voters have pause about trump his conduct his character. even those traditional republicans. those nikki haley, voters for example, the biden campaign. by bringing up the legal issues. is trying to say to them. are you really sure you want want to give trump another shot? they hope that january 6th will remind people of what they believe was a chaotic time during the trump. years, but they don't want to focus on it too much. because they know most voters care about the economy. care about what's happening inside their own home. >liz>so what about voters here? in the bay area? political expert joins me next to look at the bay area priority. when it comes to this debate. and the upcoming election. stern growth festival presents a free concert. with

>the couch is looking real comfy right now, so you'll be entire comfortable staying home for sure. absolutely. happy about my options. but i do. understand that if i don't vote, then it's probably a vote for trump and i don't want that. >liz>cbs news polling shows 66 of voters under the age of 30 say they will definitely vote in november. but that's far less than older. americans, young voters were key to biden's victory in 2020, but among those who did show up for years ago only 3 quarters say they will do it again. and the economy is a central issue. our new poll shows a majority feel it's gotten harder to buy that house raise a family. and even get a good job. and it's not lost on young voters that they are having to choose between the 2 oldest candidates half of them say neither trump nor biden understands younger people. and they're less likely to want to vote because of that

issue. join me now is james taylor, professor of political science at us. f. thank you so much for being >tfxw mic>here. >>all right. so what are you looking for? >tfxw mic>tonight? that's how these 2 men present. themselves how they comport themselves how they are able to address the issues that are raised in the questions. do they have a good command of their own? presidential? record? do they have a good command of the opponents? presidential record again? this is a unique situation. the 7th time in history where we've had a presidential rematch. so both men have a kind of incumbency advantage. and disadvantage. and the question is who can use it better against the other. >liz>speaking of the issues immigration and inflation to the top issues affecting people here in california. how do you think either those those candidates >tfxw mic>should >>approach those >tfxw mic>issues? the incumbent? when you have people feeling what they call the misery index? so as long as people feel the pain there going to blame whoever is in power. the challenge of biden and the democrats would be to say trump inherited. a great economy. trump destroyed the economy with $8 0 worth of

debt. we revive the economy. that's biden's job. trump's job is to just again do what he's been doing, which is the emphasis the misery. images oration of the american economy and the american public. >liz>you know, when we think of the bay area, we think dark blue lot of support for democrats here. however, in silicon valley there is a large a group of people that support president trump. i mean, there was a fundraiser here last week where he raised millions of dollars. for his campaign. why do you think there's such >tfxw mic>a strong simple answers? they're protecting their tax interest. they have an interest in protecting the tax cut that is going to expire soon. so if trump wins, they get the tax cut again. and this is what trump biden's is going after this is what bernie sanders campaigns have attacked over the past 8 or 9 years. so their interest is economic. i imagine that there's you know, mainly an economical alignment, but not much else. the silicon valley. liberal elements people might be economically. conservative. but socially liberal, but in these difficult times where you have a lot of perception of crime of the

social disorder it will create new new alignments of people and you'll find people that used to be conservative now lining up with the moderates because they reject trump, but you might find moderates or liberals lining up with trump because of the economic advantage of that. you get or because of positions on the border. and like you say inflation, those issues are real and californians care about them. in southern california and northern california. i mean, when you're going to the guests, gas pump here in the bay area is the highest in the country. it always is. people feel that pain. you're going know, going to the store is not like it used to be now. you know, i used to go to the store i spent 50 $60. now i'm going to the store and i'm noticing paying $95. i'm like, wait a minute. where is this coming from? so imagine if you have a large family of 4 or 5 people. and how that reflects on your family's income, so again, this has to do with how people feel. biden can boast a great economic, uh agenda. with the build back. better plan and inflation reduction act, but people still don't feel it and they're not going to be able to feel it before november, and

that's the challenge of biden. >liz>and the youth vote is not feeling enthused. about either of these candidates, and that's scary. to think that so many people are going to not potentially not be showing up at the polls. you're a professor. of >tfxw mic>young concert. there's any consolation for the democrats. is really you know, going back to the 1970. the youth vote. has only periodically had a real sort of outcome or determined determinative impact on present. presidential outcome so that's not a threat. that young people aren't as enthusiastic in terms of turn out and voting, however, young people the perception of young people being on your side, you know bernie had the bernie groups you know, groups of young people that saw him as a kind of fatherly figure. you know if you can get that kind of dynamic where a group of young people embrace biden's age and say, yes, he's going to be our grandfather. you know, they come up with a cute nickname for biden. which probably is not going to happen because most young people were turned off on by mainly on foreign policy. that's the issue that sort of broke causes chasm with biden and young people and right, frank with

you with african american voters is what happens in ukraine. what happens in palestine israel? and how the money is going over their people are equating those monies. and war with the poverty and homelessness and the encampment here in america. so everybody is watching that and so biden again as an incumbent, you bear that burden. of how people feel at the time of the election. >liz>last quick question. the format of this debate no studio >tfxw mic>audience. >>will be muted when it's not their turn to >tfxw mic>talk >>advantage >>from. i think the pending on how this plays out between the 2 of them like like a new jazz session. it's just another jazz session. a brand new 1. however, we played the last set. this is going to be a different set. we saw what happened last time they were up against each other. they argued trump called the proud boys on none of that's going to happen tonight. this is going to be a whole new jazz set and we'll see how it plays out. um organically. between the 2 and the moderator. without the audience and again. the key for these 2 men is to speak to the american people and speak to the issues that are oppressing and people. minds and hearts.

who don't like them will think it's a terrible thing. >liz>i also asked cbs chief election campaign. correspondent robert costa for some insight on this. >will be just steps away from where i am right now. here at the debate site in the spin room and the california governor is someone who while a lot of democrats think he's a presidential contender. down the line, he is someone who has gotten really comfortable with the biden people. they like him. they think he's an advocate for them that they can trust that he's earned their trust with a lot of media appearances. so they feel pretty good about having him here in the green room, and he's someone who can really the democrats view. take on the right as you know, he studies right wing media. and so he wants to take on the talking points of the trump side. tonight, more than just being a booster for biden. >liz>remember last fall, governor newsom. was also in the spin room at the reagan library. after the republican presidential debate will be right back.
