plus, this california teacher can barely believe her eyes when she opened her classroom door. >> there was this bear charging towards the door. >> how her husband with nerves of steel saved the day. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> good evening, i'm devin fehely in tonight for sara. we begin with breaking news. now, this video came into our newsroom in just the past hour. it shows a san jose police cruiser with front end damage, crushed and mangled, the airbags clearly deployed. we're trying to learn more details about exactly what happened here. that crash happened on the street outside of san jose community college. just a few feet away from that cruiser, you can see a gray sedan with damage on its driver side and a deployed airbag. the scene is on moore park and leland avenues. the front end of the police cruiser and its tires were just shredded. again,

police haven't said much about what happened here or if anyone was hurt. we're going to keep an eye on this situation. meantime, it's shaping up to be a very busy weekend in san francisco. the city is all but guaranteed to have major traffic gridlock. events are going to cause street closures in different parts of the city. the biggest is outside lands music festival. it's head lined by the killers, pop star sabrina carpenter, and rapper post malone. kelsi thorud shows us how the city is getting ready. >> reporter: the countdown to show time is officially on at outside lands. this time tomorrow this field will be packed with thousands of screaming fans. festival cofounder allen scott told us he can't wait. >> super excited. this lineup is really speaking to a lot of different generations. and we have some artists right now who
11:03 pm
are really peaking, such as sabrina carpenter, chappell roan, renee rapp. >> reporter: 75,000 festival goers are expected to attend each day, making for what could be a very crowded weekend in the city. >> thousands and thousands of people, everybody like, you know, sometimes it's crazy people, but police know what they're doing here. >> reporter: and the festival's only one of the big events going on this weekend. the giants are in town against the detroit tigers. the stefrn grove festival is back on sunday, and vice president kamala harris will be making her first trip to the city since kicking off her campaign for the presidency and announcing her running mate. >> that actually makes me more nervous about the traffic because she was just in l.a. a few weeks ago, shut down the entire freeway. so i'm much more concerned about the vice president coming than outside lands. >> reporter: allen told us he knows it's going to be a busy few days for the city, but
11:04 pm
he's excited to see it. >> san francisco's a world class city, and world class cities can put on multiple events throughout it. and so we have the infrastructure to do that. and we're excited. i think it just adds to the excitement of san francisco. >> reporter: luckily for festival goers, there are a few options other than drive to be get to the venue. every ticketholder can ride the muni for free, there's also a shuttle service and even a bicycle valet at the park for anyone cycling to the festival. overall, allen says the city is in for a weekend to remember. >> it's special is all i can say. it's really part of the fabric of san francisco, and it's something that people look forward to year round. >> well, darren, the weather at outside lands is always a bit of a toss up. concert goers are going to want to bring a jacket if they stay after dark, but the big question is, does the forecast call for sun or fog during the day?
11:05 pm
>> i think that live picture there gives us a preview. if you wanted a microclimate that had some unique challenges on it, golden gate park is it. there's going to be a very widespread marine layer out here tomorrow morning when 70,000 people want to gather at golden gate park for outside lands. so what we've done is we brought the marine layer ahead to just about 2:00 in the afternoon. let's take a midway point through the day. 2:00's also important, because that's the time of day when this marine layer will have pushed as far west as it's going to go. you can see the green rectangular strip down there. it's likely going to stay cloudy most if not all day there tomorrow. upper 50s in general. read the fine print for golden gate park. that is a 15-mile-an-hour breeze, and that means you are going to -- in addition to the fog, you're going have just enough on an onshore influence that that breeze on here is going to make that 58 feel cooler than it otherwise would have. that's one microclimate for tomorrow, kind of an important one
11:06 pm
considering what a big deal outside lands has become and how many people need to pay attention to this forecast. you might get breaks of sun, but i wouldn't plan on a whole lot, not tomorrow, and probably not for the next three days. that was one little microclimate, we got to populate the rest of the bay in the full first alert forecast. >> i asked you if we're going to have sun or fog and you kind of answered like san francisco, do you know me at all? of course, we're going have fog this weekend. darren, thank you so much. vice president kamala harris is returning to the bay area this weekend for a fundraiser with new running mate tim walz. she's expected to house the event at the fairmont hotel on knob hill. tickets range from $3,300 to $500,000. at the same time, former president donald trump just announced that he has agreed to face off against harris on the debate stage on september 1 #09. during a press conference today at mar-a-lago, trump dismissed the notion that the harris campaign is enjoying
11:07 pm
some real momentum right now. >> the honeymoon period's going to -- look, she's got a little period. she's got a convention coming up. it's about policy. it's not about her. >> i'm glad that he's finally agreed to a debate. >> well, trump also said the campaign has agreed to have his running mate jd vance debate minnesota governor tim walz. harris and walz are set to rally supporters in arizona tomorrow while former president trump holds a fundraiser in a campaign event in montana. back here in the bay area, today's commute was anything but smooth sailing for thousands of b.a.r.t. riders travelling in alameda county. b.a.r.t. had a systemwide meltdown. it shut down several stations for hours that forced people to find other ways to get home. andrea nakano reports that b.a.r.t. has been using the same train control system for over 50 years, and upgrades are a long way away. >> reporter: trains have been running smoothly tonight, but that was not the case earlier. four b.a.r.t. stations were closed and trains had to turn around here due to a computer
11:08 pm
issue. b.a.r.t. rider michael brazil got on at the 12th street stop in oakland and was supposed to go to fremont. but his ride was cut short. >> i was shocked. i had no idea what was going on. >> reporter: brazil, like everyone else on his train, was ushered off at the bayfair station in san leandro. >> i always just have my head phones in, and they told me, you need to get off the b.a.r.t. like i couldn't really hear what was going on. but i saw everyone was leaving, so i had to just go. >> reporter: brazil became one of many that had to find an alternate way home. b.a.r.t. provided bus bridges as it dealt with a network computer outage. many ended up calling friends and family for rides since uber was in high demand. >> i was going to uber, but it was really expensive because everyone was trying to uber. and so fares were pretty high. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says the system went offline around 10:00 thursday morning. it's still looking into what caused the network to fail. >> it's a computer networking issue that's impacted our
11:09 pm
train control system. so what it practically means for us, if we can't sense train control on a portion of the trackway, we can't safely run trains there. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. is in the very early stages of upgrading the system entirely to hopefully avoid issues like the one today. it will also allow them to improve service by being able to run more trains. >> we actually are pursuing a train control replacement program, we want to switch from our current system which we've had since we started service 50 years ago, to a new and advanced communications-based train control system. >> reporter: riders for the most part handled the delay in stride, even though many say the outage added at least an hour to their commute. >> if the train went normally, would you be home by now? >> oh yeah, i'd be home, shoes off, you know, be in bed or something, just relaxing watching tv. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says it'll be several years before the new system is in place, but it is a priority to replace the train control system. and still ahead, with this surprise visit to a freeway

underpass, governor newsom says he's sending a message. >> i'm not interested in providing that support and not seeing the results. >> what he says is coming next if cities and counties don't clear encampments. plus -- >> my first thought was, is it going to do any damage? i have a brand new floor. >> most people would worry about a bear inflicting a different kind of damage if they came face to face with one, but this california teacher had a solution when it happened to her in the middle of her classroom. plus, an eight-day trip to space that could turn into eight months for these astronauts if

all right, so we showed you a sneak peek last night, but today was the real deal. two chinese pandas made their official debut at the san diego zoo with lots of pomp and circumstance, which involved governor gavin newsom cracking some panda jokes. >> it is about people to people, not just panda to panda. panda-mania here in san diego. >> but just a few hours later, governor newsom made a wardrobe change and struck a very, very different tone on a surprise visit to los angeles. he was seen clearing trash that was left behind from a homeless encampment that was just removed from a freeway underpass. and he had a message to cities and counties who don't work to remove encampments, do it or the state's going to yank their funding. >> cities can do their part. you can apply for federal grants, but the state's unprecedented billions and billions of dollars of support, i'm not interested in providing that support and not seeing the results. i'm a

taxpayer, not just the governor. it's not complicated. we'll send that money to counties producing results. >> newsom recently issued an executive order directing state agencies to take action to clear encampments. on the fire watch tonight, evacuation orders are still in place just north of placerville in el dorado county. the fire has burned nearly 1,600 acres so far. thousands of firefighters are trying to get it under control, but it's been difficult because of the thick tim sxer brush in the el dorado forest. and narrow dirt roads have been limiting access. so far that fire just 5% contained at this point. all right, so we got a big weekend. we got tons of activity, tons of people coming into town, and san francisco is going to roll out the fog for people, right? >> yes, for that one particular part, stern egrove, golden gate park. anything else that's happening on the city. there are a couple of other things to look at though. we'll use the virtual set to see some unique
11:15 pm
s a -- we've been using this to point out the smoke. the smoke plume from the park fire on the other side of the state. can you see it out there? is overwhelming feature is the marine layer that had the entire coastline covered. a feature in monterey bay. look south of san francisco right near the bottom of the satellite. a little curly cue in the clouds, that's important. it's a little more than you might think. we can go there on the virtual set. let's go down to monterey bay, and we're going to visualize what's happening down there with that little curly cue. that is a coastal eddie. look at the winds. notice what they're doing down there. and by the way, we are in monterey bay there. notice how the winds are going out doing a counterclockwise spin. a weak little area of low pressure develops right off the coast. those are important because they help deepen the marine layer. if we can get that whole feature there, go a little bit farther out into the pacific, you can clearly see how it's caught up and it's doing a little counterclockwise spin. two things happen when you have
11:16 pm
a coastal eddie like that. first of all it's able to throw the clouds farther onshore. it's also deepening the clouds because it's a weak little area of low pressure up there. the clouds are now deeper, which means they're able to get farther onshore. so not only is the onshore wind turned on tomorrow, but the marine layer's getting a little bit of an assist out off the coast. when we wake up tomorrow morning, fog-gust, the term you would use when the entire bay is waking up to gray skies. i don't think the tri-valley will wake up to gray sighs tomorrow, but most of the bay will. this is the feature we were looking at when we were doing that microclimate for tomorrow for outside lands. so let's do everybody else now. and i'll put the daytime highs on here for tomorrow. and you can pick out your microclimates on here. i'm going to work my way out to the tri-valley where it's going to be in the low 90s. but look at the spread. go

back to the coast. that temperature for redwood city -- and let's go out to half moon bay. i'm going to drop the clouds so we can read the number out there along the coast for half moon bay. in the 60s. san jose, you'll kind of split the difference between all these extreme, and you'll have a day that's actually pretty close to average. 82 would be the average daytime high for san jose. so you'll be a little above it. 88 the average for livermore. the numbers in santa rosa are coming in average. north bay valleys kind of have a nice little break from the numbers st. city over on the east side will make it into the 60s tomorrow, so there will be about a ten-degree temperature spread tomorrow from the west side, polo fields and the park, all the way out towards downtown. this is classic summer when we look at how the microclimates tend to develop across much of the bay as a whole. let's get into the seven-day forecast now. and we'll go first with the
