add two more to the calendar. chaos and confusion. a new body cam video shows one officer's close encounter with donald trump's would-be assassin moments before he fired off his first shot. and taylor swift's concert terror plot revealed. the suspect's confession, his plans to kill as many people as possible, and how swifties are responding. good morning. i'm carissa lawson in for anne-marie green. voters will see former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris on the debate stage in just over a month. harris and her running mate tim walz continue to focus on the battleground states with a rally today in arizona, while the former president is heading to montana which has only voted for two democratic presidents in the last 72 years. jarred hill joins us here in new york now with the story. >> reporter: yeah, that's an astute observation, but montana does have a democratic senator

who's up for re-election also who's trying to court republican votes. trump wants none of that. remember, control of congress is on the ballot come november, not just the white house. meanwhile, looks like that battle is finally headed to the debate stage. after touching down in phoenix last night, today vice president kamala harris prepares to take her battleground barnstorm to the sunbelt. the democratic nominee also agreeing to her first head-to-head match-up with former president donald trump in a debate on september 10th. >> looking forward to it. and -- hope he shows up. >> reporter: the announcement as the vice president spent more one-on-one time with voters. harris and her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, expressed their solidarity with united auto workers in detroit. >> we are all in this together. estate in florida. >> kamala's record is horrible. she's a radical left person at a level that nobody's seen. she picked a radical left man. he doesn't want to have borders, he doesn't want to be walls, he doesn't want to have any form of safety for our country. >> reporter: trump criticizing harris for not having a sit-down interview since her run for the white house and criticized the size of her rallies. >> nobody's spoken to rallies bigger than me. >> reporter: trump falsely claimed more people turned out at the stop the steal rally on january 6th than showed up on the 1963 march on washington when reverend dr. martin luther king jr. delivered his iconic "i have a dream" speech. donald trump has agreed to two other debates. harris says she's open but nothing's on the books yet. back to you. >> thank you. we are getting a new look at what happened moments before a would-be assassin fired shots at former president donald trump last month during a rally in pennsylvania.

cbs news has obtained this body cam video showing a butler township police officer being hoisted up to the roof of a building where he spotted the gunman. the officer grabbed onto the ledge and hung on there for a couple of seconds before dropping back to the ground. he ran to alert other officers and grabbed his gun from his patrol car where he described what he saw. >> turn around on me. >> where's he at? >> straight up. >> seconds later a secret service sniper shot and killed the shooter. now to debby, the storm that's caused at least seven deaths so far. it's been downgraded to a tropical depression, but it's still packing a powerful punch as it continues to bring heavy rains, flash flooding, and the threat of tornadoes. debby is moving into the northeast now. two to five inches of rain are possible from maryland all the way up to new york. a number of tornadoes were reported in north and south carolina destroying homes and damaging a school.

cbs' cristian benevides reports from a tornado-damaged small town about 50 miles east of raleigh. we are having a lot of flooding down here. so please pray for us. >> reporter: at 10:00 p.m. on wednesday, market on main shoppe owner emily dowless got a call from the fire department that her business was flooding. she rushed over and took this video. >> pray that this water will subside and we can salvage this stuff. it was no flooding whatsoever last night. and within 30 minutes it was coming in our door. so it happened very quickly. >> reporter: bladenboro, north carolina, is a one-stoplight town. and dowless' family store is among five that flooded. they spent the day cleaning up. >> this is our family's livelihood. so we have a lot of employees and different families that depend on this business. and so it means a lot. >> it is at your door in minutes. >> reporter: across the street, mark hester, owner of the

medicine shoppe, the only pharmacy in town, doing the same thing after being up all night. >> it's a business that we need to to keep running. we can't just shut it down because people are going to need medicines here pretty soon. >> reporter: statewide, tens of thousands are in the dark. >> water is up to their chin. they are holding on to a limb right now. >> reporter: there was a ray of light in raleigh. >> got your little girl. >> reporter: three children trying to cross a rushing creek were nearly swept away when emergency crews saved them after another child called 911. within minutes they were reunited with their parents. >> andrew, he held on it a branch, then it broke. then he slid down and held on. and then we just one at a time fell again. >> reporter: at least three tornadoes from the storm were reported in north carolina and just east of raleigh. one of the tornadoes tore off the roof of this middle school.

the same tornado which tore through that middle school also killed a man in this home right behind me. his neighbors rushed and tried to help, but they couldn't. a search and rescue team recovered his body. the flood threat in north carolina continues into next week, and right here where we're at we're still under a tornado watch. cristian benevides, cbs news, north carolina. >> relentless storm there. new disturbing details about the isis-inspired plot to attack a taylor swift concert in vienna, austria. investigators say the man -- the main suspect confessed. he was planning to die while killing as many fans as possible. two other suspects, a 15 and 17-year-old, were detained. ♪ swifters, many who traveled from across the world to see the concerts, took to the streets of vienna in a show of solidarity. cbs' nicole sganga reports.

welcome to the "eras tour." >> reporter: the world's highest grossing tour in music history stopped in its tracks by a terror threat. authorities say this 19-year-old suspect pledged allegiance to the islamic state last month and planned to pose as police, driving a bomb-filled car into crowds outside the stadium before attacking fans with knives. austria's interior minister called the situation serious, saying a tragedy was prevented. police say they combed through the teen's home and found machetes, knives, timers, and explosives. they also found bomb-making materials according to a source familiar with the investigation, plus an emergency siren. investigators believed that device would be used to get through security with suspects disguised as law enforcement. also in custody a 17-year-old alleged accomplice who was working for a contractor at the concert venue.

last week, and tragedy hits a crossfit competition. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the fort worth star telegram" reports a crossfit games athlete died during the swimming portion of the race. 28-year-old lazar dukic of serbia disappeared in a fort worth lake yesterday during the half-mile swimming portion. it was preceded by a 3.5-mile run. his body was pulled from the lake an hour later. the head of crossfit says his organization will work closely with authorities to determine exactly what happened. "the arizona republic" says a third person has died in the grand canyon within a week. authorities say the body of a 20-year-old new mexico woman was recovered tuesday about 150 feet below the twin overlooks. she's believed to have been entered the park last weekend. an investigation is now under way into her death. it follows the deaths of two men last week. one man fell about 400 feet from

what? it crashed? >> yes. >> that 12-year-old boy being hailed a hero for getting help to his injured step dad after a car accident. jordan gardner, who has autism and was injured in the accident himself, walked two miles along an arkansas highway at night flagging down vehicles. a sheriff's deputy found the boy who pointed in the direction of the accident. another deputy searching for the wrecked car heard the step dad cry out. >> found your kid up the road flagging vehicles down. and -- he's the one that got us out here looking for you. >> incredible. jordan's stepfather, devin gardner, was seriously hurt. >> it was a miracle. that boy saved his daddy's life.

>> what made you want to go find help? >> wanted to save devin. >> jordan's mother says her husband is recovering from his injuries and will always be thankful to his stepson for his bravery. how about that? in today's cbs "moneywatch," after a wild roller coaster week, it was a winning day on wall street. in fact, its best day in two years after some encouraging unemployment news. the dow soared 683 points. the nasdaq gained 464, and the s&p 500 clinched 119. those impressive numbers come after the labor department reported unemployment claims fell by 17,000 last week. it's a number that was better than economists expected which fueled positive energy on wall street. a third death is now linked to the listeria outbreak from recalled boar's head deli meats in the u.s. another nine people were hospitalized bringing the total
