warning as more u.s. military power races to the region. tech trouble. donald trump's high-profile return to the social media platform formerly known as twitter gets off to a glitchy start as he tries to fight kamala harris's surge in the polls. and shaken. an earthquake rocks southern california, causing buildings to california, causing buildings to rattle and a pipe to burst. captioning funded by cbs well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the escalating tensions in the middle east. the white house says iran and its proxies could launch a significant set of attacks inside israel this week. u.s. defense officials are moving more troops and equipment to the region as president biden and other world leaders are pushing for peace talks between israel and hamas, this as hamas military wing announces they

killed one male hostage and two female hostages in separate instances. israel is working to verify the claims. cbs's jarred hill is following all of this and he joins us from new york. >> good morning, anne-marie. it says it lacks political rhetoric and launches tensions. tensions are high in the middle east as the u.s. says iran or its proxies could strike israel as soon as this week with little to no warning. the pentagon is rushing a guided miss aisle submarine and the "uss lincoln" strike group in hopes of deterring an all-out war as iran vowed to avenge israel over the assassinations of its leaders.

>> we are committed to helping israel defend itself, but at the same time, we continue to work diplomatically to prevent any escalation on this conflict. >> reporter: yesterday president biden joined a conference call during which they urged iran to stand down on its threats of military attack and discuss serious consequences should an attack occur. israeli defense leaders say its forces are at peak preparedness for the attack. the country's prime minister also warning iran to think twice. >> there is a war between israel and iran. it's going to be a war between iran and the united states of america and great britain and france and maybe other european countries and israel. >> reporter: the u.s. and its allies are also continuing to push for cease-fire and hostage release deal between israel and hamas as israeli forces continue operations in southern gaza. so far only israel has committed to sending a delegation with negotiations set to resume thursday, though, an attack with iran could disrupt those talks. yesterday the pentagon said a number of u.s. service members suffered minor injuries from a one-way drone strike in syria on

friday. anne-marie, we've been seeing iran backed groups escalating their attacks on the u.s. troops in the region since war broke out between israel and hamas last october. now to the race for the white house. former president donald trump's high-profile return to x, formerly known as twitter, got off to a bit of a bumpy start due to glitches. x owner elon musk blamed it on an overwhelmed system but did not provide any information to assist that. trump talked immigration, the economy, his political moments, and bragged about his relationships with leaders and u.s. adversaries. >> elon, i know every one of them, and i know them well. i know putin, president xi, kim jong-un. i know every one of them. >> trump's twitter account was suspended shortly after the january 6th riots at the

capitol, but musk reinstated it after he took over the platform. meanwhile the fbi took on an investigation over the trump and biden/harris campaigns. sources tell cbs news both presidential campaigns experienced attempted phishing schemes earlier this summer. the trump campaign is trying to regain momentum as new polls showing harris lead in the battleground states of michigan, pennsylvania, and wisconsin. cbs's robert costa reports. >> reporter: cbs news that he is now seeking to counter the momentum of vice president kamala harris's campaign, which has been drawing packed crowds across the country. trump has been falsely accusing harris of cheating by claiming large crowds that he says didn't exist. according to the harris campaign, an audience of more than 15,000 turned out for a rally last week in michigan. all this comes as harris works

childless americans. >> i'd love to see a child tax credit that's $5,000, but you'd have to work with congress to see how possible and viable that is. >> reporter: robert costa, cbs news, washington. authorities in west virginia are investigating a burglary at a campaign office for donald trump. security video captured images of a suspect on sunday. they're trying to determine if anything was stolen. the office is located about 30 miles northwest of washington, d.c. and tropical storm ernesto is moving toward the caribbean islands where it's expected to bring heavy rain, floods, and possible mudslides. the national hurricane center says ernesto is expected to move over puerto rico, u.s., and british virgin islands later today. it could strengthen into a hurricane thursday as it turns north toward bermuda. there could be dangerous rip currents along the u.s. east coast beginning friday. and ukraine's top military commander says his forces now control almost 400 square miles of russia's neighboring kursk

appear on the state ballot. he used a sham address in order to claim residency in new york. the impact could ruin his efforts to be placed on the ballot in dozens of other states since he used the same address to gather signatures in those states. his campaign says it will appeal. the "denver post" says former colorado clerk tina peter, who election deniers called their hero, was convicted on most charges in a breach of her county's election computer system. she was accused of using someone else's security badge to give an expert affiliated with prominent election denier my pillow chief executive mike lindell. prosecutors say peters became fixated on the voting results after others questioned the results of the 2020 presidential election. and the "the texas tribune"
