home, the eye opening new dorms at san jose state. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> good evening. i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. just ten days before it's set to begin, the popular summer festival burning man has yet to sell out. it's the first time that's happened in a decade and this comes after last year's burning man turned into a muddy mess when a surprise summer storm drenched the festival in the black rock desert. vehicles couldn't get into or out of the site for days. slower ticket sales also having an impact on some businesses in san francisco as shopping for the burn has started off slowly as well. andrea nakano visited haight street where business owners are hopeful this will be the weekend that sales pick up.

>> reporter: kimono dave's is one of the go-to places to pick up your burning man attire. >> anything that's black like reactive is going to be huge out there. you want to be seen. you want to maybe wear something that you're not going to wear in normal life and this is basically the prototypical piece that no one is really walking around. >> reporter: thursday night customers were in the store looking for the sought after kimono piece. >> this was the piece that skyrocketed my brand. you can throw over any layer. >> reporter: the owner dave carr says he's seeing signs of business picking up after a slow start to the burning man season. >> sales have been down this year, period, for everyone that does anything that i do, everything related to festival culture. it's been down. major music festivals around the country have been struggling, canceling or postponing. >> reporter: carr is not the only business owner noticing slow sales. >> as of this weekend, the world is going to come or not. >> reporter: buti at piedmont

boutique has been in business 52 years and she says 20% of her business depends on burning man sales. most of the pieces are made in-house and she has unique and practical items for any burner. >> the purpose of those is as you're going through the playa dust, which is like talcum powder, it sweeps it away from falling into your shoes. >> reporter: with ten days left until the start of burning man, businesses are prepping and hoping for a busy week ahead. for an event that centers around art, these boutiques have given burners the essentials for the event and it's given businesses a venue to show off their masterpieces. >> that was easily the most gratifying moment in my life has been the last two years consecutively, basically adventuring through an art gallery of people and randomly seeing my own work running around having fun. it was incredible. >> burning man not the only festival with slumping sales.

we told you about crackdowns in california when it comes to cell phones. governor gavin newsom has asked school districts to restrict smartphone use during school hours. one school district in stockton is taking part in that crackdown and another one

related to a big health issue for students, vaping. reporter tori apodaca shows us how they're trying to do it quietly. >> it would come in handy because, yeah, almost practically every student in lincoln smokes. >> reporter: senior at lincoln high, gabriella ponce says drug-free signs haven't stopped her classmates from vaping on campus. >> one of the challenges is it is a prevalent activity in young people. >> reporter: the superintendent says the new vape sensors installed in restrooms on their two high school campuses are designed to detect emitted vapor that reaches a specific level, sending a silent alert to administrators. >> we also have students who are afraid to use the restrooms because they report that they're not able to access the restroom because large groups of students are vaping. >> reporter: these are vape sensors installed in other school campuses across the country. lincoln's are more

subtle looking. >> if they're not going to get disciplined for it, they're not going to stop. >> reporter: discipline will be progressive. the first time a student is caught, they will be enrolled into a six-week on-campus substance abuse group. the program has existed for years. >> it's designed to really inform students about the consequences of devices such as e-cigarettes and other types of substances. >> i know a new students that were put into groups after getting caught smoking and honestly, didn't really do anything. >> reporter: if a student continues to get caught vaping on campus, they'll face detention, suspension, and in extreme cases expulsion. >> i think they have to deter them from smoking, yes. >> reporter: trying to put a stop to smoking in school to increase safety. >> enforcement is a little complicated, but might as well give it a try. >> reporter: but will students just get sneakier? >> they're still going to do it, but obviously be more

average, just on the negative side of normal high temperatures. some coastal drizzle is possible saturday. a storm system to our north will send most of its moisture into oregon and washington, but close enough for a little drizzle right along the coast, plenty of fog and cloud cover. the long range forecast keeps us very near normal for august, no huge changes in store for us over the next several days. let's talk about conditions right now as we look out from san jose, not seeing fog there either. obviously if you're not seeing it in san francisco, you won't have it in the santa clara valley yet, 60 degrees downtown, the warm spot 67 degrees, only a 7-degree difference from san francisco to concord on this thursday evening. we won't see a great difference in temperatures early tomorrow morning. let's talk about the fog first, bring up our floor map. like this morning, it's not going to spread too far into the inland valleys as we head into early tomorrow. across the bay into the inland valleys to begin the day, but it retreats from the valleys quickly backing up to

the coast midday and i think we'll see more sunshine along the coast one more day. then the fog will be stubborn heading into the weekend. temperatures will dip to the lower 50s in the north bay valleys, some of the cooler spots, 52 degrees in petaluma. not a whole lot of variation, the warmest spots staying in the low 60s around antioch and brentwood and 60 degrees for a low temperature in san jose by early tomorrow morning and then we warm up still within about 5 degrees of average, 2 degrees above normal in san jose, 3 degrees above normal in concord, low to mid-90s for the hottest spots on the map, nothing even close to triple digit heat. temperatures around the bay in the 70s, 70 degrees in san francisco, 60s along the coast, and most inland parts of the north bay in the 80s until you go farther inland. that's where you're more likely to get up to just above 90 degrees in santa rosa and a little farther above 90 degrees in

healdsburg, but that is appropriately hot for this time of year. farther down the line, there are signs things will change a bit at the end of the month. this is the eight to 14-day forecast. the warmest temperatures are shaping up well to our east. it does look like we are going to see things pivoting in a warmer direction as we finish the month of august and head into early september. that's a long way down the line. let's enjoy this pleasant august pattern while it's here. the warm spots inland only reach the lower 90s, some days temperatures only reaching 80s for inland parts of the bay area, the weekend, saturday and sunday, even a few passing clouds on saturday. around the bay temperatures stay in the 70s, morning fog giving way to afternoon sunshine. along the coast i think you will see sunshine tomorrow, but then it's going to be in real short supply over the weekend with drizzle on saturday, a few hundredths of an inch of possible the first half of the

a robotic fish could help us better understand the

world's oceans. this is eve, the latest edition of a school of robotic fish designed to collect information from the environment. a group of swiss engineering students built the bot. they believe its ability to camouflage itself will keep other sea life relatively undisturbed. eve can swim up to two hours by itself and uses sonar to navigate. think about this. imagine if you're traveling and all of a sudden an eight-day trip turns into almost eight months. that could be the case for a pair of astronauts aboard the international space station after the boeing-built craft they arrived in had issues on the way. astronauts butch wilmore and suni williams have been stuck in space more than two months now. nasa is figuring out how to bring them back down, but it could take six months to do that. the pair could stay aboard the international space station until then. there are enough supplies. family members get to facetime with the astronauts and say they're staying positive. >> it is so cool. he gives us a
