everything seems to be getting more and more expensive. so which presidential hopeful has the better plan to get us back on track? we'll break it down with the bay area economic expert in just a few minutes. but first, a look at your news headlines. a deadly shooting in berkeley. police got reports of gunshots on adeline street near fairview. they found the victim and tried to give medical aid, but that person died at the scene. some roads are closed in the area as officers investigate. oakland police arrested three people in connection with the fatal shooting of a mother of eight. maria ramos was shot last wednesday when she confronted a group in her car. they were suspected of dealing drugs. today, police said a man and two teens are under arrest. they did not release the suspects identities. leaders across the state were at a san jose home depot >>this >>morning. governor >>newsom >>signed legislation addressing property crime in california among other things, the package of bills gives police more leeway to make arrests and

increases penalties for retail thieves and car burglars. san francisco police have seized five vehicles allegedly involved in a number of sideshow events from june 9th. that includes this stunt driving event in front of pier one on the embarcadero. cars swerved, lasers flashed and one vehicle was set on fire. now, at the time we reported that police managed to disperse the crowd but made no arrests. these are just some of the cars that have been seized. sfpd says the investigation is ongoing the stage is set for the inaugural golden gate park concert series at the polo fields tomorrow. system of a down and the deftones will be on the area hosted outside lands just last weekend. and oakland's markham elementary just reopened its newly revamped library. it was made possible with support from the golden state warriors. read to achieve program. former warriors player festus ely

dropped by to chat with the kids. he and the warriors dance team have been making the rounds in bay area schools, spreading the word about the power of books. all right, on to first alert weather now. a bit cooler and cloudier in some parts of the bay area this weekend. meteorologist jessica burch looks at our microclimates from the virtual view studio. hey jess. >>it's another beautiful day here in the bay area. of course, it was back to school week for all those kiddos, and you know what? we have great weather heading into after school activities today and all throughout this weekend for any sports or arts activities that you want to go do. we have 80s today all the way up into santa rosa, so a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. we have 70s and 80s anywhere from fremont over into livermore. still holding on tight to 90s off in the east bay near antioch and concord walnut creek too. however, our market microclimate is just along our coastline are only topping off in the 60s. today, near half moon bay 80s are expected today down into the santa clara valley. let's take a quick look at what's happening for us as we head into this weekend. you'll notice that on our seven

day models in just a bit, but we will see some more clouds rolling in from offshore. and here's the exact reason why. today we have some low pressure moving in from offshore, and that's going to change the direction of winds. bring in some more clouds and all the storms are staying north of us, but we are getting those leftover clouds from it. it's also bringing in some cooler weather for the weekend too. so a lot of outdoor activities will be just a little bit cloudier than usual. for example, the bay bridge series happening this weekend. tomorrow the first pitch is just around 4:00, so we're expecting upper 60s turning into lower 60s throughout that game. and then once we head into sunday, you have a choice. you can either go to the second game or you can head over to stern grove festival happening gianna will be hosting that. we're expecting upper 50s and low 60s from noon all the way into 4:00. so beautiful weather as we head into the next couple of days. we still have those clouds holding on tight to us, especially along the bay into early next week and mostly 70s. in the forecast notice how we cool down just a little bit into saturday. that's thanks to that area of low pressure moving in from the north. and then we warm up slowly heading into next week back into the upper 70s, but still small day

to day changes right? well, it's a lot more noticeable for our friends in our inland areas. for example, once that area of low pressure moves in, we jump from the low 90s to the low 80s just into our forecast tomorrow, off into the east bay. and then we slowly start to warm up as we head into next week, back with sunshine and more 90s as early as monday >>on the road to the november election, vice president kamala harris just laid out her plan for the economy if elected president while campaigning in the battleground state of north carolina. but as willie james inman reports, former president trump is calling her proposals price fixing >>reporter >>in her first policy speech since becoming the democratic party's presidential nominee, vice president kamala harris acknowledged the toll of inflation. america's middle class and proposed what she calls an opportunity economy, >>an economy where everyone can compete and have a real chance

to succeed. >>she's calling for the first ever federal ban on price gouging for food and groceries. new policies to spur home building, including offering up to $25,000 for first time home buyers to use as a down payment, and an expansion of the child tax credit, providing as much as $6,000 to families with newborn children in a statement, former president donald trump said the proposals amount to price fixing calling her comrade kamala and a full communist. >>many people >>at a news conference thursday, he blamed harris and democratic legislation for rising costs. >>she cast a tie breaking votes that caused record inflation. she cast the votes >>price gouging is already illegal in harris proposals. get mixed reviews from economists. they would also need congressional approval. trump, meantime, is now facing fresh backlash for praising a wealthy donor. at an event thursday night. he compared the congressional medal of honor to the presidential medal of

freedom that he bestowed upon miriam adelson in 2018. >>it's actually much better because everyone gets the congressional medal of honor that soldiers, they're either in very bad shape because they've been hit so many times by bullets or they're dead. she gets it and she's a healthy, beautiful woman. >>trump's running mate defended him friday. >>i don't think him complimenting and saying a nice word about a person who received the presidential medal of freedom is in any way denigrating those who received military honors. >>trump's campaign suggested his comments were misinterpreted meanwhile, final preparations are underway right now in chicago for a big week at the democratic national convention. 50,000 people are expected to attend and security is top of mind. the harris campaign is looking to highlight her record before and during her vice presidency, and she'll have some high profile help on night one. president biden is set to speak. also monday, the first female presidential nominee for

harris's economic policy plans. what stood out to you >>well, i think your report laid it out. well, i mean, it's a real mix of, items a number of them are sort of taken from the longtime democratic playbook i remember some of them back in the mondale campaign, back in 84. the housing incentives in terms of developing housing, the first time home built homeowners assistance. i think the one thing that stood out that's different is the approach in terms of her basically wage and price controls and, again, a lot of that will be the details. we've had various attempts dating back to the nixon administration in the early 70s. wage and price controls they haven't worked out very >>well. but >>again, let's see what it comes comes down to in terms of details. >>all right. we're also getting some news on the unemployment front today. just as the bay area sees a wave of new tech

layoffs, california actually no longer the leader in unemployment, but it's important to dig in a bit more to the numbers here right? >>oh, definitely yes. you're right. today, we had been the highest unemployment among all states for a number of months today. actually nevada passed us. they have a 5.4% unemployment rate. our unemployment rate is 5.2%, tied with illinois so we're not the highest, but we're the second highest. so we're still well above other states, well above the national rate of 4.3%. >>so let's make what makes california unique to that, though. why do you think our numbers are so consistently high? is it because we have the largest population >>no, no, not at all we, they're both short term and long term there's some short term impacts. obviously the tech layoffs in our area that have continued longer than expected, the more severe shutdowns during the pandemic. and then there's sort of the

root elements in terms of the regulations, administrative state we've built up here in california over the past three decades. >>so what advice do you have for folks either currently in the job market looking to make a change in careers, perhaps, or people entering the workforce? you know, a lot of people come to the bay area to work in tech is that a risky industry to be entering into right now? >>well in >>the >>50 years i've been involved, tech has had a number of has been a continual process of job creation and destruction. so even in good times, tech firms are laying off workers. it remains fundamentally very sound. what's different? what's a little bit >>different >>this morning, >>we >>had massive over hiring during 2021 and 22. then we >>tech >>followed with layoffs in 2022, 2023. it looked like those layoffs were slowing down, even ending to some extent. but, we've seen just in

the past couple, couple weeks really, in terms of the announcement this week by cisco the announcement by, intel, the announcement by talley, so the tech layoffs are continuing longer. again, layoffs in tech are ongoing, even in good times but >>they're >>extent of the layoffs is, is surprising. >>and i'm curious with the upcoming election, would you expect to see some sort of impact to the unemployment numbers, jobs created or jobs lost given the outcome of the election >>well, i think we'll see a slowdown in any event, in terms of we're beginning to see it we saw in terms of nationally a slowdown to 110,000 jobs created nationwide, in july here in california, the job creation numbers went down to 21,000. and i might add, >>liz, >>of that 21,000, that was that

came out this morning, 19 over 19,000 were in government >>and >>so most of our job growth, this past month has been in government, whereas these other fields, the private sector firm fields construction manufacturing, financial services, business and professional services showed minimal or no gains. and i think that's concerning. >>all right. former edd director michael bernick, thank you so much. >>thank >>you. starting tomorrow, new rules will shake up the housing market across the u.s.. cbs reporter jo ling kent shows us what that means for both buyers and sellers. buyers sellers and agents are all going to be feeling the effects of this settlement starting this weekend. and the idea here is to increase transparency after a major antitrust lawsuit. now, first you're going to see a big shift in agent commissions, real estate agents normally charge 5 to 6% commission, and they would split that now with the

buyer's agent that is typically paid by those selling the home. now, under this new rule, buyers and sellers will now have the opportunity to negotiate costs with their respective agents. that means buyers may pay the commission fee to their real estate agents. there are also changes when it comes to listing a home for sale on the mls. the multiple listing service that's that ubiquitous tool that helps real estate professionals share and learn about properties. agents will no longer be allowed to use the service to offer to pay a commission to agents representing potential home buyers, they will also be required to remove all broker compensation fields. now, you might remember why did this all happen? back in march, the national association of realtors announced that these rules were going to be part of a landmark $418 million settlement to end an antitrust lawsuit. the association was challenged over allegedly forcing sellers to pay up to a

6% realtor commission in which they allegedly drove up home prices. but the idea here is to reduce costs and make it more transparent but also increase commitments to real estate agents out there. when it comes to buying and selling homes and bay area home prices continue to soar according to the california association of realtors the median price in june rose to $1.4 million. that's 6% higher than last year, and in more than 200 cities across the u.s., the average starter home has topped the $1 million mark, more than half are right here in the bay area >>we got an affordability crisis across the country, >>a staggering statistic in 237 cities in the united states. it will cost you at least $1 million to own a starter home. that's according to zillow, defined as a home in the lowest third of values in that market. >>homes that should be, easily

accessible to to renters trying to get on the lowest rung of the housing ladder. >>nearly half of those cities, 117 of them, are in california alone. >>those are markets close to big job centers on the coasts, near the ocean, near lakes and mountains. right? markets that tend to attract a lot of people >>a senior economist at zillow says supply and demand is playing a big role in the skyrocketing prices. >>when >>mortgage rates doubled back in 2022, competition for smaller homes heated up, pushing up the price. but good news may be on the way for first time buyers, with more homes for sale. price cuts on the rise, a potential interest rate cut soon and buyers have more time to weigh options as homes stay on the market longer. his advice talk to a real estate agent. >>having an agent find a homes within the locality. the area that will fit within your

own abundance. and if you can't find what you're looking for for free, there are online platforms to buy items used like swappa offer up and facebook marketplace. don't forget to shop around target, walmart, staples and amazon are all offering 50 cent deals on different basics like notebooks, crayons pencils and glue. staples will also give you $10 off a purchase of $30 or more. if you trade in older items like binders or backpacks as part of their recycling program >>for kids. uniforms. polos are $7 or less and skirts $12 or less at target. old navy and the children's place. check out jcpenney, walmart, and amazon for shoes under 20 bucks with a little homework you can get an a plus. in economics, this back to school shopping season write down all those tips. well, there are several organizations that families can turn to for help. the salvation army and the icna relief are two groups
