we will unleash explosive economic growth and vast new prosperity for all of our citizens >liz>there are 71 days until election day and today we're focusing on one of the top issues, maybe the top issue for most voters the economy, the presidential race could come down to which nominee can convince us it would be better off in their hands. so today we're asking about the differences in their economic policies. there's a lot of them and how they would impact us here in the bay area. we'll have that conversation in just a few minutes but first, here's a look at your news headlines an alameda county firefighter is under investigation after a social media video apparently showed him making racial slurs. the footage was recorded by a driver friday after a traffic collision on highway 99 in lodi. fire officials say it happened while the firefighter was off duty. they apologized for his actions and placed him

on paid leave. the hilton hotel next to the oakland airport will officially shut down this wednesday. it is the latest business to close along the troubled hegenberger corridor. in just the last 18 months, hotel officials did not say why they are closing after 56 years, but workers believe it's the result of the pandemic and crime. sam trams busses are running today despite a contract dispute. there were concerns about a potential employee sick out, but the transportation agency says it doesn't expect any service disruptions today or tomorrow police found a ten foot python after a sideshow in vallejo. they found it in a suspect's car late friday night after a chase that ended in hercules. police say they returned the python to its owner, who is now facing criminal charges. an e-bike e-bike caught fire in san francisco. it happened on a fire escape on eddy street between leavenworth and hyde in

the tenderloin. luckily, no one was injured and the state has a new tool to fight wildfires. this is cal fire's c-130 hercules. the air tanker can carry 4000 gallons of fire retardant and fly 800 miles. it is the first of seven coming to the fleet hundreds of families in san francisco now have access to free food, a free grocery store just opened at martin luther king junior middle school in the bayview. the area is known as a bit of a food desert, so amazon, the ymca and the nonprofit goodr teamed up to bring fresh food to the neighborhood all right, on to first alert weather. now some parts of the bay area will get close to triple digits tomorrow. talk about a 180 from this weekend, right? meteorologist jessica burch is in our virtual studio tracking the temperatures for us throughout the bay area. today. we're dealing with mostly clear conditions. actually, all throughout the east bay, the north bay and the santa clara valley. however, our friends along the coast, it's still cool and it's still

cloudy, especially at the golden gate bridge. but daytime highs today they're hitting the 70s and 80s anywhere from san francisco across the bay bridge over into oakland. we still have 90s in the forecast today off into the east bay, so a hot one for all those after school activities for the kiddos, and a similar trend for our friends down into the santa clara valley too. we'll continue to keep a close eye on these temperatures throughout the next couple of days, but the big weather story for us it's actually a nice cooldown as we wrap up this week and head into this weekend's forecast. yes, i know it's only monday and we're talking about the weekend, but down into the santa clara valley where we have those 90s in the forecast for us, and those blue skies above us, it will feel a lot nicer right around the corner friday heading into saturday. so here's what we're dealing with as we head into this afternoon. coastal clouds anywhere from half moon bay up into pacifica, a very similar trend for bodega bay to into the evening hours tonight. we deal with light winds this morning, heading into this afternoon, though of course it's a lot gustier here's all the way into dinnertime tonight, about 25 n close to san francisco, all the way over into the santa clara valley winds move in from the north around 20mph. taking a look at the next seven days,

let's start off in our inland spots. we do get that nice cooldown that i just mentioned. what's happening right now is high pressure is directly over us. so it's giving us these hot, well above average temperatures off into areas like the east bay, close to the triple digits just by tomorrow. but once we head into our thursday forecast, that area of high pressure moves away. suddenly we're talking about ten degrees cooler weather. all the way into our thursday forecast. by saturday into sunday now we're into the low 80s, and that's going to be a nice treat for all those kiddos wanting to do outdoor activities heading into this weekend. now we head over into the bay areas across the bay bridge, over into oakland and berkeley. still dealing with 80s. this afternoon we'll flirt with the upper 70s by tomorrow. suddenly we're right back down into low 70s, wrapping up this week with some partly cloudy skies sticking around, especially in the morning hours >liz>and even chance with political conventions now in the rearview, the presidential hopefuls are back on the campaign trail. this week. as skyler henry reports,

former president trump is attempting to connect vice president kamala harris to the biden administration's deadly withdrawal of u.s. soldiers from afghanistan three years ago praising our former president donald trump stood alongside family of service members killed during the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan and laid a wreath at arlington national cemetery it was three years ago today, a suicide bomb attack at the kabul airport killed more than 100 afghans and 13 u.s. service members. speaking to the national guard association, members in detroit trump looked to blame vice president kamala harris for the pullout caused by kamala harris. joe biden, the humiliation in afghanistan set off the collapse of american credibility and respect all around the world. during his administration, trump signed a withdrawal agreement with the taliban that the biden administration

carried out. the vice president says she was that last person in the room on that decision. is that failure also hers? we've got to stop assigning partizan blame on fundamental things like our national security, the harris campaign tells cbs news. the vice president will start focusing more on foreign policy as she works to persuade more voters that she's ready to become commander in chief. harris returns to the campaign trail later this week with a bus tour of georgia. her campaign sees it as a state that's in play and where they're willing to spend some of the more than half $1 billion already raised on advertising and get out the vote efforts >liz>and harris and trump are scheduled to debate on september 10th. but the two sides are still fighting over the ground rules. the harris campaign wants both mikes on the entire time, even when the candidate, the other candidate, is speaking meantime, donald trump says he doesn't want abc news to moderate the debate because he claims the network

strength that's anything but ordinary. today we are zeroing in on some of the economic policies that vice president harris and former president trump have touted leading up to this election. nancy cordes has details of some of their plans >by the end of my first term, we will end america's housing shortage by building 3 million new homes and rentals that are affordable for the middle class. she said she'd do it by providing tax incentives for home builders who construct less expensive starter homes. she also wants to give up to $25,000 in down payment assistance to first time home buyers here in raleigh. the cost of a typical home has

risen from $287,000 to nearly 450,000 just in the past five years. together, >we will build what i call an opportunity economy when it comes to food. another strain on family budgets, harris vowed to impose a ban on what she called grocery price gouging. the average cost of a pound of ground beef has risen 44% since 2019. that's >supposed to be like one of the cheapest meats you get and somehow it's gone up to the harris campaign hasn't provided many details on how these plans would work, or how much they would cost. leading former president donald trump to speculate >sometimes >>wildly. >>now kamala is reportedly proposing communist price controls. she wants price controls and if they worked, i'd go along with it, too. but they don't work on one thing. the two sides do seem to agree on face the nation. trump's

running mate, senator jd vance, proposed a new $5,000 per child tax credit for families. we >want to have a more pro-family policy. harris upped the ante proposing >$6,000 >>for newborns. >that is a vital, vital year of critical development of a child, and the cost can really add up, especially for young parents. >liz>joining me now is uc berkeley professor doctor olaf groat. thanks so much for being with us. can you tell us how trump and harris would plan, how their plans to tackle the economy, economy and what that would mean for us here in the bay area? we know that trump has sizable support in silicon valley, but how would their policies make an impact here? sure >live>thing liz. so first of all, there are some similarities between both camps, right? you heard some of it the the child care, the child tax credit, the earned income tax credit might be another thing. >liz>taxing >>tip. >>excuse me >live>for service workers in this area, and and things of

that nature. so there are some similarities here because both sides have actually realized that the nation is hurting. right? people aren't feeling the economy doing well, partially because of inflation, partially because of income disparity that's rising in the country. and so they're trying to address that. not surprisingly, now harris is going full bore on that side, easing the pain on the demand side with even greater measures than trump. whereas trump is saying, look on the supply side, i'm going to make sure that energy is a lot less costly for all of us, right? a lot of people driving to work. so he wants to lower energy costs for the average family by about 50%. we'll see how he would be able to do that. ostensibly by opening up additional drilling rights for oil and gas. and so so he is stronger on that front now on the international front, which is very important for us here in silicon valley trump has said he will put tariffs in place between 10% and 60%,

depending on where in the world you are located, whereas you know, whereas harris i think is going to be tougher on antitrust, such as potential, new rules of the game for the tech industry, potential breakups et cetera. so, so on the enterprise side, i think enterprise executives will be dealing with very different implications for either of those two on the working level, as it were, meaning, you know, making sure that people in the ecosystem, anybody from teachers and baristas to entry level workers and their families are have an easier start and an easier time. i think both are going to have positive implications on that level. >liz>so a cbs news poll taken just before the dnc showed trump had an edge with likely voters who say the economy is a major factor. you know, we watched kamala harris, though, she says she's really going to go after housing, both building new housing and then incentives for first time home buyers. do you think that that's enough for folks here in california

and especially the bay area, given the high cost of living? >live>well, that's a really great question, liz. you know, the fear, of course, is that if you enable more demand then more demand at stable supply will increase housing prices. so she would really have to come through with that supply side tax incentive to build greater supply. and there are all kinds of procedural issues and and zoning issues etc. are tied up with that. but so she would definitely have to make sure that the supply can meet the demand or else prices will continue to go up. >liz>all right. i want to switch gears here for a moment to talk about the launch of the polaris dawn flight. that's tomorrow. it'll attempt to be the first ever commercial space walk. tell us about this kind of new frontier in space economy which sounds so strange. it's like the future is here. it >live>sure is. and it's exciting, right? it's not getting. it's not getting a lot of news coverage just yet. but the launch tomorrow, if it goes well, is actually a seminal event for california's space

economy. we are we field about a third of the united states space companies and about 1 in 10 globally. so this is big for us. and what's going on here is that musk has paired up with a multibillionaire, and and they're leading this polaris dawn mission and so what they're doing is they're, they're going up to an orbit that is about as high, as the apollo era flights were. and to top it all off, they're going to be doing a space walk, testing the new spacesuits. and so so that will be very exciting to watch. and what this really does is if it goes well, it opens up the space economy for california for the rest of the world to private interests. right. these are billionaires funding those billionaires being astronauts. and that will in fact, with paired with the model that spacex is driving of reusable rockets. right. agile fast

development of technology will in fact make it more feasible for more people to play in that space economy. and that's good for us. and in fact uc berkeley has opened a new space center with nasa. and so that's the first indicator here that a lot of people are seeing. a lot of potential for the state. >liz>yeah. no, i was going to ask you about that new space center. i mean, is the goal to become the new caltech or maybe folks down in florida to rival those those places? cape canaveral, i was going to say, is that is that kind of the goal here? >live>no, i don't think we'll be launching rockets, although i think there are some experiments going on on passenger trains and things like that. but i think it's opening up space to the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and that's what's so exciting, is that now undergraduate students can found their own startup ventures in the space industry and and that will unleash a lot of creative power, i think, for the state, which is a great thing >liz>very exciting. all right, doctor olaf groat, thank you so much. always >live>good to be with you, liz. thank you good >liz>to see you. we'll be right

the foo fighters say they did not give trump's campaign permission to use their song at a recent rally on friday. my hero was played at a trump event in arizona. a spokesperson for the band says the trump campaign didn't ask the group for permission and if they were asked, the band says they would not have granted it. the spokesperson says the band is planning to donate any royalties from the unauthorized use to harris's campaign earlier this month. celine dion criticized trump's unauthorized use of my heart will go on at a rally in montana. and recent cbs news polls continue to show a tight race in this presidential election, especially in these seven battleground states. cbs news correspondent charissa lawson has details >after >>taking to the stage together on the last night of the dnc as
